Start with the original Sword Art Online Season 1. Then watch Sword Art Online II, Ordinal Scale, Alicization, and War of Underworld. The recap special, Progressive films, and Alternative: Gun Gale Online spin-off are optional, with specific placements explained below.
The best first-time watch order for Sword Art Online is the main anime continuity: Sword Art Online Season 1, Sword Art Online II, Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale-, Sword Art Online: Alicization, and then Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld. Extra Edition, the two Progressive films, and Alternative: Gun Gale Online are optional branches rather than mandatory steps.

The apparent complication is that several entries revisit earlier events. The Progressive movies take place during the beginning of the Aincrad death game, but they are retellings and expansions of material from Season 1—not missing episodes that should be inserted into its episode list. For a newcomer, the original Season 1 remains the clearest introduction.
The simple Sword Art Online watch order
- Sword Art Online — Season 1
- Sword Art Online Extra Edition — optional
- Sword Art Online II
- Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale-
- Sword Art Online: Alicization
- Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld
That is the recommended route for someone watching the franchise for the first time. It follows the main television continuity and places the original feature film where its story matters. If you want every major anime entry, add the Progressive films after Season 1 and the Gun Gale Online spin-off after Sword Art Online II.
#1 Best Overall
- Dragon Ball Complete Seasons 1-5 DVD
1. Sword Art Online Season 1
Start with the original 25-episode season. It introduces Kirito, Asuna, the 2022 Sword Art Online incident, and the wider technology that allows virtual worlds to affect real life. The season contains two connected sections:
- Aincrad: the trapped-player death game and the early relationship between Kirito and Asuna.
- Fairy Dance: the aftermath of the SAO incident and the Alfheim Online storyline.
Season 1 is still the franchise’s essential foundation even if your main interest is the Aincrad setting. It establishes the characters, rules, terminology, and consequences that later seasons assume you understand.
2. Sword Art Online Extra Edition: optional recap
Extra Edition is a television special rather than a required continuation. Much of it recaps Season 1 through a framing story, but it also adds an underwater quest in Alfheim Online. Yui wants to see a whale, and Kirito, Asuna, and the others undertake a new quest while events in the real world provide the surrounding frame.
Watch it immediately after Season 1 if you want a refresher before moving to Season 2, or skip it if you remember the first season well. Skipping it does not leave a major gap in the main plot.
3. Sword Art Online II
Next, watch all of Sword Art Online II in the order presented by the season. It takes place about one year after the original SAO incident and moves the story into Gun Gale Online, a firearm-focused virtual world.
The season’s internal order is:
- Phantom Bullet: Kirito investigates the Death Gun mystery and meets Sinon, a major new character.
- Calibur: a shorter Alfheim Online adventure.
- Mother’s Rosario: an Asuna-focused storyline with lasting emotional importance.
Do not move Mother’s Rosario ahead of Calibur, and do not treat the season as only a prologue to later material. Its Gun Gale Online investigation and its Asuna-centered conclusion are both part of the intended continuity.
4. Ordinal Scale
Watch Sword Art Online the Movie -Ordinal Scale- after Sword Art Online II. Set in 2026, the film introduces Augma, an augmented-reality device, and the Ordinal Scale game. Kirito, Asuna, and the established cast become involved in a mystery connected to the new technology.
This is not merely an optional side adventure for a first complete watch. It is an original feature-length continuation, and later anime material incorporates developments associated with the movie. Placing it before Alicization therefore gives the cleanest continuity.
5. Sword Art Online: Alicization
After Ordinal Scale, begin Sword Art Online: Alicization. The story shifts to the Underworld, a large virtual environment with a fantasy-like society and its own rules. Kirito enters this world and meets Eugeo, whose friendship becomes central to the arc.
The initial Alicization television segment runs for 24 episodes. It is a substantial change in scale from the earlier game settings, so it is best watched as a continuous arc rather than interspersed with spin-offs or flashback films.
6. Alicization – War of Underworld
Continue directly from Alicization with Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld. It is the continuation and conclusion of the Underworld storyline, not a separate reboot.
The anime was broadcast in two blocks: the first aired from October through December 2019, and the concluding block aired from July through October 2020. Platform episode labels can divide the material differently, but the viewing principle is simple: finish Alicization, then watch all of War of Underworld.

The two Progressive movies revisit the earliest Aincrad period with more attention to Asuna and the floor-by-floor progress of the death game:
- Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Aria of a Starless Night
- Sword Art Online the Movie -Progressive- Scherzo of Deep Night
Aria comes before Scherzo. Together, they are best understood as an optional Aincrad retelling and expansion. They do not function as two missing chapters that can be dropped into the middle of Season 1 without changing the viewing experience.
There are two sensible placements:
- Best for newcomers: watch Season 1 first, then optionally watch Aria and Scherzo before Season 2. This lets you understand the original introduction before experiencing the revised perspective.
- Best for a completed-series viewer: watch both films after War of Underworld as a retrospective return to Aincrad.
Do not insert either film between individual Season 1 episodes unless you deliberately want to compare overlapping adaptations. The films alter the emphasis and presentation of the opening story, especially by giving Asuna more narrative focus.
Readers who want more detail from this period can use Sword Art Online Progressive 1 light novel as a companion. Yen Press describes it as a new version of the story beginning on Aincrad’s first floor, where Kirito and Asuna face the early death-game challenges. It is additional reading, not a prerequisite for either the original season or the movies.
Rank #2
Where Alternative: Gun Gale Online fits
Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online is a spin-off, not another Kirito-and-Asuna season. It follows Karen Kohiruimaki, who plays as the pink-avatar LLENN, and centers on her activities in Gun Gale Online, including the Squad Jam competition.
The cleanest placement is after Sword Art Online II, because that season first establishes Gun Gale Online in the main continuity. You can then return to the main path with Ordinal Scale.
The spin-off order is:
- Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Season 1
- Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II
Gun Gale Online II continues the spin-off’s own story. Its opening premise announces a third Squad Jam after the previous team battle. It is not required to understand Ordinal Scale, Alicization, or War of Underworld.

- Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online Season 1
- Sword Art Online Alternative: Gun Gale Online II
This route completes the main television and film continuity first, then leaves the retrospective Progressive material and separate Alternative storyline for afterward. If you prefer to watch the Aincrad retelling while the original story is fresh, move Aria and Scherzo to immediately after Season 1.

How to watch Sword Art Online legally in the United States
Streaming catalogs are territory- and date-sensitive. At the time of the underlying research, Crunchyroll pages were available for the main Sword Art Online series, Progressive, Ordinal Scale, and Alternative: Gun Gale Online. That does not guarantee that every season, film, subtitle, dub, or plan option remains available in every U.S. account.
Before subscribing, search the specific title—not just “Sword Art Online”—and confirm that the season or movie you need is playable in your territory. Historical U.S. release notices confirm that Crunchyroll has carried Sword Art Online II, Ordinal Scale, Alicization, and War of Underworld during different release windows, but past availability is not a permanent catalog guarantee.
For viewers who prefer ownership, licensed physical releases include Blu-ray editions of the Progressive films and Gun Gale Online II through the Crunchyroll Store. Availability, language options, and regional compatibility should be checked before purchase. An Aria of a Starless Night Blu-ray is a practical option for viewers who want to keep the Progressive retelling on disc, but the cited research verified the licensed retailer listing rather than current Amazon stock.
What about the novels and future releases?
The English light novels published by Yen Press provide a companion path for readers who want material beyond the anime or a more detailed version of early Aincrad. The Progressive novels are especially relevant to the two films, while the first volume is an accessible place to begin for readers interested in the opening floor.
The official Sword Art Online portal currently lists Sword Art Online the Movie -Integral Factor- with a 2028 date and describes it as a new original theatrical film. Because that date is future-facing relative to the current watch order, it should be treated as an upcoming project—not placed among the currently released entries.

- Most interested in Gun Gale Online? Watch Sword Art Online II, then Alternative: Gun Gale Online Season 1 and II.
- Want the safest first viewing with no continuity guesswork? Follow the six-step main order and add the optional branches afterward.
