For a first viewing, watch the Star Wars films and series in release order. Start with A New Hope and continue through the original trilogy, prequels, and sequels. For a rewatch, use chronological order beginning with The Acolyte. There is no mandatory single order, and this guide explains the trade-offs, complete lists, shortcuts, and timeline exceptions.

For a first viewing, watch the Star Wars films and series in release order. Start with A New Hope, continue through the original trilogy, then watch the prequels and sequels. Once you know the major story, try chronological order as a rewatch, beginning with The Acolyte.

There is no single compulsory order. Release order preserves the saga’s original introductions, reveals, and progression from the original trilogy to the prequels and sequels. Chronological order lets you follow the fictional history from the earliest screen-era events forward, but anthology shows and crossover series mean that it is an approximation rather than a perfect episode-by-episode timeline.

The lists below follow the current official StarWars.com viewing guide supplied for this article, including titles listed for 2025 and 2026. Release years are included; The Mandalorian and Grogu is listed with its announced theatrical date of May 22, 2026.

Star Wars movies and series in release order

This is the order in which the screen stories first appeared, using the official guide’s sequence. It is ordered by release year and separates The Clone Wars film from the subsequent series.

  1. Star Wars: A New Hope — Episode IV (1977)
  2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — Episode V (1980)
  3. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — Episode VI (1983)
  4. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — Episode I (1999)
  5. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones — Episode II (2002)
  6. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith — Episode III (2005)
  7. Star Wars: The Clone Wars film (2008)
  8. Star Wars: The Clone Wars series (2008)
  9. Star Wars Rebels (2014)
  10. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — Episode VII (2015)
  11. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
  12. Star Wars: The Last Jedi — Episode VIII (2017)
  13. Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
  14. Star Wars Resistance (2018)
  15. The Mandalorian (2019)
  16. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — Episode IX (2019)
  17. The Book of Boba Fett (2021)
  18. Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)
  19. Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
  20. Andor (2022)
  21. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi (2022)
  22. Ahsoka (2023)
  23. Star Wars: Tales of the Empire (2024)
  24. The Acolyte (2024)
  25. Skeleton Crew (2024)
  26. Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld (2025)
  27. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord (2026)
  28. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu (2026)

Why release order works best for newcomers

The original trilogy establishes the galaxy, its central conflict, and its most important characters before the prequels add historical context. The later films then continue the saga with that shared history already in place. Watching in production order also reflects how audiences originally encountered the franchise rather than rearranging revelations with hindsight.

The standalone films and series can deepen the experience, but they are not prerequisites for understanding the nine numbered episodes. If this is your first visit to the galaxy, beginning with the complete release list is valid; beginning with the nine films is simply the more manageable version.

Star Wars movies and series in chronological order

This is the simplified in-universe sequence in the official guide. It is a practical viewing order, not a claim that every episode of every anthology or crossover series fits into one exact date.

  1. The Acolyte
  2. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — Episode I
  3. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones — Episode II
  4. Star Wars: The Clone Wars film
  5. Star Wars: The Clone Wars series
  6. Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi
  7. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith — Episode III
  8. Star Wars: Tales of the Empire
  9. Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld
  10. Star Wars: The Bad Batch
  11. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord
  12. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  13. Obi-Wan Kenobi
  14. Andor
  15. Star Wars Rebels
  16. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  17. Star Wars: A New Hope — Episode IV
  18. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — Episode V
  19. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — Episode VI
  20. The Mandalorian
  21. The Book of Boba Fett
  22. Ahsoka
  23. Skeleton Crew
  24. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
  25. Star Wars Resistance
  26. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — Episode VII
  27. Star Wars: The Last Jedi — Episode VIII
  28. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — Episode IX

Important chronological-order caveats

  • The anthology series span multiple periods. Tales of the Jedi, Tales of the Empire, and Tales of the Underworld each contain stories set at different points in the timeline. Their position in the list is therefore a useful block placement, not the exact location of every episode.
  • Andor and Rebels overlap. Their events occur concurrently, and both lead toward Rogue One. You can watch one complete series and then the other without claiming that the first entirely predates the second.
  • Resistance crosses a film boundary. The series begins before The Force Awakens and continues beyond it. The high-level list places it near the sequel trilogy, but its exact episode chronology crosses that boundary.
  • The Clone Wars has two separate entries. Watch the 2008 film before the 2008 series when following this guide. The film is not simply a recap or a season of the show.
  • The Mandalorian and Grogu belongs to the New Republic period. The official guide places it after Skeleton Crew and before Resistance in its simplified chronology. Its announced theatrical release date is May 22, 2026, so it should be treated as a future entry until it is actually available to watch.

The shortest first-time Star Wars watch order

If you want the essential story and nothing else, watch the nine numbered films in release order:

  • Enjoy Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD as well as DVD discs
  • Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
  • Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
  • Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
  • Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
  1. Star Wars: A New Hope — Episode IV
  2. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back — Episode V
  3. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi — Episode VI
  4. Star Wars: The Phantom Menace — Episode I
  5. Star Wars: Attack of the Clones — Episode II
  6. Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith — Episode III
  7. Star Wars: The Force Awakens — Episode VII
  8. Star Wars: The Last Jedi — Episode VIII
  9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — Episode IX

This route leaves out the two standalone theatrical films and all series, but it still tells the central numbered saga from beginning to end. Add the expanded stories afterward rather than interrupting your first pass if you want the clearest introduction.

An expanded live-action path

After the nine saga films, add the major live-action expansions in this sequence:

  1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  2. Solo: A Star Wars Story
  3. The Mandalorian
  4. The Book of Boba Fett
  5. Obi-Wan Kenobi
  6. Andor
  7. Ahsoka
  8. The Acolyte
  9. Skeleton Crew
  10. Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, when it is theatrically available

This is a selective path rather than a new official master order. It gives a newcomer the main films and the most prominent live-action expansions without requiring every animated anthology or animated series. The projects are set in different eras, so use the full chronological list above if your priority is fictional history rather than a manageable live-action watchlist.

The completionist route: when to add animation

For a complete screen marathon, use the full release-order or chronological list rather than trying to fit each animated episode manually between films. The animated stories are not merely filler: The Clone Wars, Rebels, The Bad Batch, Resistance, and the Tales shows develop characters, institutions, conflicts, and historical events that later live-action projects may assume viewers recognize.

You can still begin with the films. A practical approach is to watch the nine saga episodes first, then return to the full list for animation. If you already know the films, chronological order makes the animated material easier to place in the broader history.

Where to watch

The official StarWars.com viewing guide is framed around movies and series on Disney+, and Disney+ publishes its own chronological guide to the Skywalker Saga films. Disney+ is therefore the principal streaming destination identified by the official guides, but its catalog can vary by country and change over time.

Before starting a marathon, check the current catalog in your market. Do not assume that a title listed in the guide is available everywhere, and do not treat a scheduled 2026 release as currently streamable. Prices, subscription offers, and availability are deliberately not listed here because they require a current, market-specific check.

What does not belong in the main watch order?

The list above is intentionally limited to the principal Star Wars movies and series. The wider franchise also includes books, comics, games, audio dramas, shorts, specials, documentaries, LEGO productions, and other projects with different continuity or viewing logic.

Star Wars: Visions deserves a separate mention. It is an anthology of short stories with its own creative structure, not a required chronological chapter in the Skywalker-era narrative. Watch it whenever you want a set of distinct interpretations rather than placing it between two numbered episodes.

The High Republic is another optional pathway rather than a missing entry in the screen list. It is a multimedia publishing initiative spanning novels, comics, manga, and audio, so it is better approached as a reading or listening project than inserted into a movie-and-series marathon. LEGO and documentary material work the same way: they can enrich a fan’s collection but are not mandatory narrative chapters.

Optional physical companions

If comparing release order with fictional chronology becomes confusing, Star Wars: Timelines is the most directly relevant physical companion. The DK reference book charts key events, characters, and storylines across the galaxy. It is useful as a visual reference, but it is not required for watching the films and shows. Check the current edition and availability before buying.

For broader background rather than a strict viewing sequence, The Star Wars Book is another DK reference option. It covers notable characters, history, technology, organizations, events, and species, making it better suited to general franchise research than to solving the watch-order question itself.

Final recommendation

If you are new to Star Wars, watch the movies in release order: the original trilogy, the prequels, and then the sequels. Add Rogue One, Solo, and the series afterward as your interest grows. If you already know the saga and want to experience its fictional history from the earliest screen-era events forward, choose chronological order beginning with The Acolyte. Just remember that the anthology shows span eras, Andor and Rebels overlap, and Resistance crosses the timeline of The Force Awakens.

Do I need to watch the animated Star Wars series?

No. The nine saga films provide the central story. Animation adds important character and historical context, and later live-action projects may build on it, but a newcomer can start with the films and return to the series later.

Where does Star Wars: Visions fit in the watch order?

No. Star Wars: Visions is an anthology of short stories with its own creative structure, so it is not a required chapter in the Skywalker-era chronology. Watch it separately whenever you want.

Where does The Mandalorian and Grogu fit?

The official guide places The Mandalorian and Grogu in the New Republic period after Skeleton Crew and before Resistance in simplified chronological order. Its announced theatrical release date is May 22, 2026, so its availability depends on the release date and your market.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Release order is the best default for first-time viewers; chronological order is the better rewatch experiment. Start with the nine saga films if you want the shortest complete story, then expand into the standalone films and series.
