Netflix Basic has been discontinued, but there was not one universal June shutdown date for every subscriber. Netflix retired the plan in stages, market by market. Some existing customers may now see an account-specific deadline telling them to choose another plan. The date and available choices depend on your country, billing arrangement, and whether Netflix is billed directly or through a partner.
For US subscribers, Netflix currently lists three plans: Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, Standard at $19.99 per month, and Premium at $26.99 per month. Prices and features can differ elsewhere, so readers outside the US should use their local Netflix pricing page rather than copying these figures.
What is happening to Netflix Basic?
Netflix began retiring Basic as part of a broader plan overhaul. Its fourth-quarter 2023 shareholder letter said Basic would be retired for new and returning members in advertising markets and that the company would begin removing it for existing customers in selected countries, starting with Canada and the UK.

In its second-quarter 2024 letter, Netflix said the phase-out was underway in Canada and the UK and would begin in the United States and France. Netflix then said in its third-quarter 2024 letter that Basic had been phased out in the US and France during that quarter, with Brazil scheduled to follow later in the fourth quarter.
That history matters because the headline “Netflix Basic is shutting down in June” can suggest a single worldwide cutoff. The evidence supports a more precise explanation: Netflix has been retiring Basic in stages, while some existing subscribers may receive a new, account-specific notice to change plans.
A June 22, 2026 secondary report described customers in the United States, Canada, the UK, and other regions being prompted to move from Basic to another plan. However, Netflix’s public materials reviewed for this article do not provide a complete country-by-country schedule for those notices. The notice inside your Netflix account is therefore more important than a general June date.
Your current US options
The following is the current US comparison supplied by Netflix’s plan information. Treat it as US-only information and check the official pricing screen immediately before changing your subscription, because Netflix can change prices, features, taxes, and regional availability.
| Plan | US price | Ads | Simultaneous devices | Resolution | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Yes | 2 | 1080p Full HD | The lowest monthly price |
| Standard | $19.99/month | No | 2 | 1080p Full HD | Ad-free viewing without 4K |
| Premium | $26.99/month | No | 4 | 4K Ultra HD with HDR | Larger households and 4K viewers |
Standard with ads: the lowest-cost replacement
Choose Standard with ads if keeping the monthly bill as low as possible is your priority. It includes two simultaneous devices and 1080p Full HD, and downloads are supported on two devices. On those headline specifications, it may provide more simultaneous viewing and higher resolution than some versions of the old Basic plan.
The trade-offs are important. The plan includes advertising, and Netflix says that some movies and shows may not be available on the ad-supported tier. If you regularly download shows for travel or use Netflix with a limited internet connection, check both title availability and the plan’s download limits before switching.

Standard: the closest ad-free replacement
Standard is the most natural choice for a former Basic subscriber who wants to continue watching without advertisements and does not need 4K. It provides 1080p Full HD and two simultaneous devices.
The major drawback is price. At $19.99 per month in the current US listing, it costs substantially more than the retired Basic tier. It also includes the option to add one extra member who does not live in the household, subject to Netflix’s eligibility rules. That extra-member feature is not necessarily available in every country or billing arrangement.
Premium: pay for specific capabilities
Premium is intended for households that will use its additional features. It supports four simultaneous devices, 4K Ultra HD with HDR, downloads on six devices, up to two extra members, and Netflix spatial audio.
Premium is worth considering if several people watch at once, you own a suitable 4K HDR television, you download on many devices, or spatial audio matters to you. It is not the automatic replacement for every Basic customer: if you watch alone or with one other person on a standard HD screen, the extra cost may buy features you will not use.
Which plan should you choose?
- Choose Standard with ads if the lowest price matters most and you can accept commercials and possible title restrictions.
- Choose Standard if you want ad-free 1080p viewing and do not need four simultaneous streams or 4K.
- Choose Premium if your household needs four streams, 4K/HDR, more downloads, or spatial audio.
- Cancel Netflix if none of the available plans provides enough value at its new price.
Do not choose Premium solely because Basic is disappearing. First count the number of people who actually watch at the same time, check your television and audio equipment, and decide whether ads or unavailable titles would be more disruptive than paying for the ad-free Standard plan.
How to change your Netflix plan
- Open Netflix in a web browser and go to the Change Plan page. The plan-change screen may be easier to access on the web than in a television or mobile app.
- Select Standard with ads, Standard, or Premium.
- Select Continue or Update.
- Review the price and features, then confirm the change.
Netflix says a move to a higher-priced plan takes effect immediately. A move to a lower-priced plan takes effect on your next billing date, and you can continue using the higher-priced plan until then.

If Netflix has displayed a Basic termination notice, read the stated deadline and effective date carefully. Do not assume that switching on a general June date will produce the same result for every account.
Can you cancel instead?
Yes. Changing to another plan is not mandatory if Netflix no longer represents good value for you. Netflix’s help material says members can change their plan or cancel at any time.
Before canceling, check the billing page for the effective end date. If you pay Netflix through a mobile carrier, broadband provider, cable company, smart-TV service, or another package, the cancellation process and end date may be controlled by that provider rather than by Netflix’s standard account controls.
If you are comparing the cost with other services, use a current, country-specific comparison rather than assuming another subscription is cheaper or has the same catalogue. Readers considering a replacement can compare streaming services after deciding whether Netflix’s remaining plans meet their needs.

Partner billing can change what you see. Netflix says device makers and pay-TV and mobile operators help customers discover, sign up for, use, and pay for Netflix. Some operators may also bundle Netflix with other streaming services.
As a result, you may not see all three US plans, the ad-supported option, or the normal plan-change timing if Netflix is part of a package. Check your provider’s instructions or account portal. It may be useful to review Netflix through your provider, but do not assume that a bundle preserves the old Basic plan unless the provider explicitly says so.

Important country and price differences
- The prices above are US prices. Netflix charges different prices in different countries, and local taxes may affect the final amount.
- Plan availability varies by market. The ad-supported plan is not necessarily available everywhere.
- Partner packages can differ. A carrier or pay-TV package may offer different plans, payment rules, or change and cancellation procedures.
- Extra-member rules vary. Eligibility, pricing, and the number of permitted extra members depend on location and plan.
- Your account notice is decisive. Netflix has not published a complete public schedule covering every country and billing cohort receiving a June notice.
What happens to profiles, downloads, and viewing?
Changing plans is different from opening a new Netflix account. In the normal plan-change process, you select a new plan from the existing account, so you should not need to create a new account simply because Basic is being retired. Review the confirmation screen and your account’s billing details after the change.
Downloads and simultaneous-device limits depend on the replacement plan. Standard with ads supports downloads on two devices, while Premium supports downloads on six devices. If you have downloaded content for offline viewing, check the replacement plan’s download allowance and whether the titles you need are available on the ad-supported tier.

A new streaming stick, remote, HDMI cable, or Netflix gift card will not recreate Basic. Hardware can help you watch Netflix on a compatible television, and a gift card can fund a membership where accepted, but neither preserves the discontinued subscription tier. The practical choices are to select an available Netflix plan, keep a partner-provided package if it still suits you, or cancel.
If you decide to leave Netflix
Canceling Netflix may make sense if the new price is too high, the ad-supported catalogue does not meet your needs, or you use the service too infrequently. Before replacing it, compare the services available in your country for price, advertising, simultaneous streams, offline downloads, supported devices, and the specific documentaries or series you watch.
Do not judge an alternative solely by its advertised monthly price. Introductory offers can expire, annual billing can change the effective monthly cost, and catalogues differ by country. A service that is cheaper may not contain the programs that caused you to subscribe to Netflix in the first place.
The practical next step
Open Netflix in a browser, check the plan-change screen and any deadline notice, and write down the price and effective date shown for your account. If you are billed through a partner, check that provider’s portal instead. Then choose the least expensive plan that genuinely covers your household’s viewing needs—or cancel if none does.
