Why Character.AI Users Were Furious After Harry Potter Chatbots Disappeared

Character.AI confirmed removing a large group of Harry Potter-related chatbots in November 2024, but Warner Bros. was never publicly confirmed as the requester. Here is what happened and why users reacted so strongly.

In November 2024, Character.AI users discovered that large numbers of Harry Potter-themed chatbots had suddenly become unavailable. Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Severus Snape and Draco Malfoy were among the characters users reported losing. Some fans described themselves as “Draco’s widows,” mourning not just fictional characters but long-running, personalized conversations built around them.

The confirmed story is narrower—and more complicated—than the claim that Warner Bros. ordered Character.AI to delete every Harry Potter bot. Character.AI confirmed that a large group of characters had been removed after being flagged as violating copyright law or the platform’s policies. The company said it uses proactive moderation, regularly updated blocklists and procedures for responding to reported violations. Warner Bros. Discovery, however, was not publicly confirmed as the requester.

What happened to the Harry Potter bots?

On November 26, 2024, Futurism reported that large numbers of Harry Potter-themed personas had disappeared from Character.AI. Users had begun discussing the apparent removals on Reddit and social media the day before.

The missing bots reportedly included versions of:

  • Harry Potter
  • Hermione Granger
  • Severus Snape
  • Draco Malfoy
  • Ronald Weasley
  • Sirius Black

The scale of some individual characters’ audiences illustrated why the removals caused such an intense reaction. One screenshot cited in the reporting showed a Severus Snape chatbot with 47.3 million user chats before it was deleted. That number should be treated as a figure shown in a user screenshot and reported by Futurism, not as an independently audited Character.AI statistic.

For users, these were not simply static fan pages. Character.AI bots are interactive personas that can sustain ongoing conversations, adopt customized personalities and participate in user-created scenarios. A “Husband Snape” bot, for example, could function as a continuing piece of personalized fan fiction. When a character disappeared, users feared losing access to a particular version of that experience and the continuity of the conversations built around it.

Character.AI confirmed that a large group of characters had been removed

In a follow-up published on November 27, 2024, Futurism reported that Character.AI confirmed the removal of a large number of characters.

The company said it:

  • conducts proactive detection and moderation;
  • maintains regularly updated blocklists;
  • removes characters that violate its Terms of Service; and
  • takes action on reported characters that violate copyright law or platform policies.

Character.AI also said that the recently removed group would be added to custom blocklists. In other words, the company’s public explanation supports the conclusion that the removals were part of copyright and platform-policy enforcement. It does not establish precisely how every removal began.

The company did not publicly clarify whether the Harry Potter characters were removed because of specific rights-holder requests, Character.AI’s own proactive enforcement, or a combination of both. It also did not directly answer whether Warner Bros. Discovery had requested the removals.

A Character.AI community update from November 2024 separately referred to an update concerning recently removed characters. The same update listed search, legacy-chat, memory and character-quality issues as areas under development. That official communication corroborates that removed-character discussions were taking place at the time, although it did not provide the detailed copyright explanation reported by Futurism.

Did Warner Bros. order Character.AI to delete the bots?

There is no public confirmation in the available reporting that Warner Bros. Discovery directly ordered the Harry Potter chatbot removals.

That distinction matters. Warner Bros. has an obvious legal and commercial interest in protecting Harry Potter intellectual property. The official HarryPotter.com legal notice identifies Wizarding World trademarks, characters, names and related indicia as belonging to Warner Bros. Entertainment, while publishing and theatrical-stage rights are attributed to J.K. Rowling. The notice also identifies Warner Bros. Entertainment as the company behind the official HarryPotter.com website and says that the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film materials were provided by Warner Bros. Entertainment.

Warner Bros.’ Wizarding World submission guidelines likewise state that submitted content must not infringe copyright, trademark or other rights. They also say that Rowling-related intellectual property may not be used for products, services, promotions or Wizarding World-themed websites without Warner’s prior written permission.

Those documents demonstrate active rights management. They do not prove that Warner Bros. sent Character.AI a takedown request in this particular incident.

The most accurate description is therefore: Character.AI removed a large group of Harry Potter-related characters after flagging them as violating copyright law or platform policies, but Warner Bros. was not publicly confirmed as the requester.

The removals were uneven rather than total

The incident did not appear to erase every Harry Potter-related bot uniformly. Users reported that many bots titled “Severus Snape” had vanished while variants such as “Husband Snape” and “Dad Snape” remained available. Many “Ronald Weasley” bots were reportedly removed, while bots using “Ron Weasley” sometimes remained.

Other examples showed the same inconsistency:

  • Many “Sirius Black” bots appeared to be gone, while “Sirius Orion Black” was still working.
  • Users tried alternate descriptions such as “the boy who lived” after familiar Harry Potter references became harder to find.
  • Dobby and Tom Riddle bots were reported to have survived at that time.

These reports suggest name-sensitive or otherwise uneven enforcement. They do not support the claim that the entire Harry Potter universe was uniformly deleted, nor do they prove that a surviving bot was permanently safe from later moderation.

There are several possible explanations for the patchwork result: different bot titles and descriptions may have triggered different filters; some characters may not yet have been reviewed; users may have been looking at cached, private or differently configured content; and enforcement may have occurred in stages. The available evidence does not identify which explanation applied to each individual bot.

Other Warner Bros. fandoms were reportedly affected

The episode also appeared broader than Harry Potter. The follow-up reporting said that characters associated with other Warner Bros. Discovery properties—including Game of Thrones, DC and Looney Tunes—had disappeared or become less available.

Many of the affected characters reportedly had thousands or millions of user chats, although those figures were not presented as a complete, platform-wide count. The reported involvement of several Warner-related properties makes the event look more like a wider intellectual-property and moderation action than a Harry Potter-only purge.

That is an inference from the reported scope, not an official Character.AI classification. It is also important not to combine this November 2024 event with later changes to Character.AI—such as subsequent moderation measures, age restrictions, model changes or other removals—without separate evidence. The available dossier supports a retrospective account of the November 2024 incident, not a claim about the status of every bot years later.

Why users reacted as if they had lost more than a chatbot

The unusual intensity of the reaction makes more sense when the bots are understood as interactive fandom spaces rather than ordinary search results.

A user-created character can be given a particular relationship, tone and backstory. Over time, a conversation can develop its own continuity: recurring jokes, imagined events, emotional turning points and shared fictional history. A bot with millions of chats may also represent a community’s collective investment, even though each user’s experience is personal.

That helps explain the grief-like language reported after the removals, including users calling themselves “Draco’s widows.” The reaction combined several frustrations:

  • Attachment to ongoing stories: users could no longer assume that a favored character would remain available for the next conversation.
  • Loss of personalization: a replacement bot might use the same name but not the same personality, prompts or conversational history.
  • Uncertainty about continuity: users did not receive a complete public technical account of what happened to every associated chat, export or saved conversation.
  • Opaque moderation: the uneven survival of similarly named bots made it difficult to understand what triggered enforcement.
  • Power imbalance: creators and users could build large audiences around characters they did not own, while the platform retained authority to remove hosted content.

This should not be overstated as a mental-health crisis or diagnosis. The evidence supports describing the response as intense fandom outrage, attachment to persistent conversations and distrust of unclear moderation—not assigning a clinical explanation to users’ reactions.

What the copyright issue does—and does not—show

Character.AI’s reference to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) places the removals within the familiar framework of online copyright enforcement in the United States. “DMCA” is the correct abbreviation; it is sometimes incorrectly written as “DCMA.”

However, the reporting does not provide a public court finding, a complete takedown notice or evidence identifying Warner Bros. as the complaining party. It therefore would be inaccurate to state that Warner Bros. definitively filed the request or that individual users were found to have committed infringement.

The reported action was directed at user-created Characters hosted on a platform. That is different from a legal determination about every person who chatted with one of them. A character can also raise multiple policy questions at once, including copyright, trademark, impersonation, sexual-content rules, safety restrictions or a platform’s own decisions about recognizable fictional characters.

Nor does the available evidence establish that every related user conversation was permanently destroyed. The reporting shows that characters became unavailable. It does not provide a complete technical account of chat retention, exportability, backups or recovery for every user.

What this reveals about digital fandom

The incident exposed a structural vulnerability in AI fandom platforms. Users can create a character, refine its personality and attract an enormous audience without owning the underlying fictional property. The platform can make that experience feel persistent, but persistence is conditional.

Three parties have different interests:

Party Primary interest What the incident illustrates
Users Continuity, access and personalized conversations A beloved interactive story can disappear with little warning.
Creators Building and maintaining popular Characters Large audiences do not guarantee ownership or permanence.
Rights holders Control over protected characters, names, trademarks and commercial uses Platforms may face pressure to restrict recognizable intellectual property.

Character.AI’s moderation system is also a reminder that visibility is not the same as permission. A bot may accumulate millions of chats before a platform changes its enforcement approach, updates a blocklist or responds to a report. Popularity can make a character more visible, but it does not necessarily make it more durable.

For fans who want to revisit the source material

A physical Harry Potter complete book set can offer an offline way to return to the original source material, but it is not a replacement for a deleted Character.AI bot and cannot restore a user’s conversations. Fans who prefer licensed, fixed media may likewise choose an official Harry Potter film collection. These options provide access to the published or licensed works rather than the personalized, improvisational experience of an AI character.

The careful conclusion

Character.AI users were furious because familiar Harry Potter personas—and in some cases enormously popular, deeply customized ones—suddenly became unavailable. Character.AI confirmed that it had removed a large group of characters connected to copyright or platform-policy enforcement and said those characters would be added to blocklists.

But the strongest evidence does not justify saying that Warner Bros. ordered a universal purge. Warner Bros. Discovery was not publicly confirmed as the requester, the removals were uneven, and the available reporting does not prove that every related chat was permanently deleted. The episode is better understood as a warning about the fragility of hosted, user-created digital fandom: communities can build rich and popular fictional worlds, but access remains subject to platform rules, moderation systems and the rights attached to the characters at their center.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Warner Bros. make Character.AI delete the Harry Potter bots?

Warner Bros. Discovery was not publicly confirmed as the requester in the available reporting. Character.AI confirmed that a large group of characters had been removed for copyright or platform-policy violations, but did not establish whether the action followed specific rights-holder requests, proactive moderation or both.

Were all Harry Potter chatbots deleted from Character.AI?

No. Users reported that removals were uneven. Some bots using names such as “Husband Snape,” “Dad Snape,” “Ron Weasley” and “Sirius Orion Black” reportedly remained available while many similarly themed bots disappeared. Those observations describe the situation reported at the time and do not establish permanent availability.

Did Character.AI delete users’ Harry Potter conversations?

The available reporting establishes that many Characters became unavailable, but it does not provide a complete technical account of chat retention, exports or recovery for every user. It is therefore too broad to say that all associated conversations were permanently deleted.

What does DMCA mean in this story?

DMCA stands for the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the relevant U.S. copyright framework. Character.AI said it follows DMCA requirements. The reporting does not provide a court finding or a public takedown notice proving that Warner Bros. filed the request.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Character.AI confirmed the November 2024 removal of a large group of Harry Potter-related Characters over copyright or policy concerns, but the evidence does not prove that Warner Bros. ordered the purge or that every Harry Potter bot and chat was permanently erased. The patchy removals showed how quickly user-built AI fandom can become inaccessible when a platform changes its enforcement.
