Roku channels include free ad-supported movies, shows, and 500+ live channels, plus optional paid subscriptions, provider apps, and antenna-based local TV. Learn what is free, what costs money, how to add channels, and how to watch live and local TV on Roku in the United States.

Roku channels: best channels, what’s free, what’s paid, and how to watch depends on the service and your location. In the United States, Roku offers free ad-supported apps and 500+ free live channels, while premium subscriptions, provider logins, and local antenna broadcasts follow separate rules for access, billing, and hardware.

The Roku platform is not one all-inclusive cable package. It combines The Roku Channel, third-party streaming apps, optional subscriptions, live-TV services, and—on compatible Roku TVs—local over-the-air channels received through an antenna.

Key takeaways

  • The Roku Channel is free to start and includes thousands of free on-demand choices plus more than 500 free live channels in the United States.
  • Free Roku viewing usually means ad-supported programming, and catalogs, advertisements, accounts, and regional availability can change.
  • Paid Roku channels are optional: Roku can bill subscriptions purchased through Roku, while subscriptions bought directly from a provider are managed by that provider.
  • Roku activation requires an internet connection and Roku account, but activation itself is free and Roku charges only when a user chooses to buy something.
  • Local broadcast channels require an HDTV antenna connected to the Ant/Cable In port of a compatible Roku TV; an antenna does not work as a universal feature on every Roku device.

What channels are free on Roku?

The best free starting point is The Roku Channel’s free catalog, which Roku describes as offering thousands of free on-demand movies, shows, Roku Originals, news, and kids’ programming. The same experience also includes free live channels, although the selection is ad-supported and changes over time.

According to Roku’s current Live TV page, U.S. viewers can access more than 500 free live TV channels on The Roku Channel. Available categories include news, weather, sports and sports highlights, food and home, reality entertainment, music, and kids’ programming. The number and exact channel lineup are current claims from Roku, not a permanent guarantee for every market or device.

Roku’s channel-store listing summarizes the service as: The Roku Channel is your home for free TV, Roku Originals and premium entertainment. — Roku, official channel-store listing. The premium portion is optional; a free Roku account does not unlock paid subscription catalogs automatically.

Free Roku destination Best for What to expect
The Roku Channel Best overall free starting point Thousands of free on-demand choices and 500+ free live channels; advertising and an ever-changing selection apply
Live TV Channel Guide Free linear, live-style programming News, weather, sports highlights, food and home, reality, music, kids, and other entertainment categories
Free third-party apps Specific news, music, entertainment, or family programming Free tiers may require an app account, include advertisements, or vary by market
HDTV antenna on a compatible Roku TV Local over-the-air broadcast channels Reception depends on location and antenna; no streaming subscription is required, but the antenna is separate hardware

What are the best Roku channels?

The best Roku channel depends on what you want to watch. For a broad free selection with minimal setup, start with The Roku Channel. For local news, distinguish internet-based local-news streams from broadcast channels received through an antenna. For sports, check whether you need a live game, highlights, a particular league, or local-market coverage before choosing an app.

Best free channel for general entertainment: The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel is the strongest first recommendation for viewers who want free movies, television, Roku Originals, live news, kids’ content, and themed live channels in one place. Roku describes the selection as ever-changing, so a movie or channel available today may not remain available indefinitely.

Best for free live TV: the Live TV area

Open Roku’s Live TV area or Live TV Channel Guide to browse free linear programming by category. Roku support documentation says viewers can filter the guide and create a favorites list, which makes a large free lineup easier to navigate. Free live TV is generally ad-supported rather than commercial-free.

Best for local news: use the right meaning of “local”

Roku’s internet-based live-TV experience may include local-news services such as NewsON and Haystack News, but coverage depends on the app and the viewer’s market. A compatible Roku TV can also receive local over-the-air broadcasts through an HDTV antenna connected to its Ant/Cable In port, as explained in Roku’s antenna and cable-TV instructions.

A Roku streaming player is not automatically an antenna tuner. Do not assume that every Roku device can receive antenna channels: the cited antenna setup applies to Roku TV hardware with an Ant/Cable In input.

  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

Best for kids and family viewing

Roku’s Kids & Family experience groups age-oriented recommendations, kid-friendly programming, and free 24/7 channels. Parents should still check age suitability and parental-control settings because family discovery areas can also surface subscription content; not every kids’ title is free.

Best for sports

Free sports programming is narrower than free general entertainment, and live-game rights vary by league, event, market, and service. Roku’s NFL guidance distinguishes the free, 24/7 NFL Channel, which provides highlights, stats, and score updates, from services and apps that carry live games or require a subscription. Compare live games with highlights, local restrictions, required subscriptions, and whether an antenna or live-TV service is an alternative before signing up. Channel availability and prices can change.

Best for music and radio

Roku support documentation lists Spotify, Pandora, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, Amazon Music, and SiriusXM among music and audio apps. Some services offer free tiers, while expanded catalogs or ad-free listening may require a paid plan. The free or paid features belong to each service and should not be confused with a universal Roku subscription.

Are Roku channels free?

Some Roku channels are free, some require a paid subscription, and some require an existing cable, live-TV, or provider account. Roku is a platform rather than one all-inclusive television package. The Roku Channel’s free tier and many third-party apps provide no-subscription viewing, usually with advertising; premium services and provider apps can add recurring costs.

Option What you get Payment and billing Main caveat
The Roku Channel free tier Free on-demand movies and shows plus live channels No subscription required for the free catalog Ad-supported; catalog changes over time
Other free apps App-specific free movies, shows, news, music, or live channels Usually no subscription for the free tier An account, advertisements, or market restrictions may apply
Premium subscription purchased through Roku A paid service inside Roku’s subscription experience Recurring payment managed through the Roku account Price, trial, catalog, and availability can change
Provider app purchased directly The provider’s catalog on a Roku device Provider manages the subscription and billing Requires the provider’s account when a subscription is necessary
HDTV antenna on a compatible Roku TV Local over-the-air broadcasts Separate antenna purchase; no streaming subscription Reception and channel availability vary by location

What is paid on Roku?

Paid viewing on Roku normally falls into three categories: premium subscriptions purchased through The Roku Channel, subscriptions purchased directly from a streaming provider, and live-TV or cable-replacement services.

For U.S. customers, Roku’s current channel-store information says The Roku Channel offers more than 50 Premium Subscriptions, including services such as Paramount+, Discovery+, AMC+, STARZ, and MGM+. These subscriptions are optional and are separate from the free Roku Channel catalog. Prices, promotions, content, and geographic availability require checking at the time of purchase.

A provider app can also be installed on Roku after the viewer subscribes directly to that provider. Live-TV services such as Sling TV, Fubo, YouTube TV, DIRECTV STREAM, or Hulu + Live TV may be available as separate apps or subscriptions, but channel lineups, sports rights, local coverage, and prices change.

Who bills a Roku subscription and how do you cancel it?

The billing company depends on where the subscription was purchased. If a subscription was purchased through Roku, manage billing and cancellation through the Roku account. If the subscription was purchased directly from the streaming provider, that provider manages billing and cancellation. Roku explains this distinction in its subscription support documentation.

Before canceling, identify the seller on the receipt, account page, or bank statement. Removing an app from the Roku Home screen does not necessarily cancel a recurring subscription. A Roku-billed subscription and a provider-billed subscription can look similar while requiring different cancellation paths.

Do you need a subscription for Roku?

You do not need a paid subscription to activate a Roku device or watch the free tier of The Roku Channel and other free apps. You do need an internet connection and a Roku account to activate the device and use streaming apps. Roku states, Activation is always free, and Roku will never charge you a fee to create an account. — Roku Support, device-activation documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Roku may ask for a payment method during setup, but Roku’s activation guidance says the user is charged only after choosing to buy something. A payment method on file is not the same as an active paid channel subscription.

How do you add channels to Roku?

Roku now commonly labels the app marketplace Store or Streaming Store, depending on the device and software version. The exact labels can differ slightly, but the basic process is the same.

How do you watch live TV on Roku?

For free internet-based live TV, open The Roku Channel and choose the Live TV area or Live TV Channel Guide. Browse categories, filter the guide, and add frequently watched channels to favorites. For local broadcast stations, connect an HDTV antenna to the Ant/Cable In port on a compatible Roku TV and run the TV’s channel scan.

Live streaming and over-the-air television are different paths. Internet live TV requires a working internet connection and may be ad-supported or subscription-based. Antenna television uses local broadcast reception and does not require a streaming subscription, but signal strength, terrain, building materials, and station coverage determine what the antenna receives.

Do you need a Roku device to watch Roku channels?

You need a compatible Roku TV, Roku streaming player, or supported Roku app experience to use Roku channels on a television. A non-Roku television with an available HDMI port can use a Roku streaming player, while a television that already has a working Roku interface does not need another Roku device.

For a non-Roku TV that needs a new streaming player, the Roku Streaming Stick 4K is a current Roku option with HDMI connectivity, 4K, Dolby Vision, HDR10+, long-range Wi-Fi, and a voice remote with TV controls. It is a hardware recommendation for adding or improving Roku access, not a requirement for making paid channels free. Roku says its streaming devices are sold through Amazon and other major retailers; retailer inventory and program eligibility should be verified before purchase.

Do I need a Roku device?

Buy or replace a Roku streaming player when a non-Roku TV needs Roku access, an existing player is slow or unsupported, or the viewer wants a dedicated Roku interface. Skip the extra device when the television already has a working Roku TV system or when the viewer only needs an antenna connected to compatible Roku TV hardware.

What should you buy for local channels or a damaged remote?

An HDTV antenna belongs in the local-channel setup, not in a general list of Roku streaming channels. The antenna must connect to a compatible Roku TV’s Ant/Cable In port, and reception varies by location. An antenna does not provide paid streaming services or turn every Roku player into an over-the-air tuner.

If the original remote is lost or damaged, Roku’s replacement Voice Remote is a relevant accessory. Roku says the remote works with all Roku TV models, most Roku players, and Roku audio devices, although some older models may not be supported. Verify compatibility with the specific Roku model before buying.

Which Roku option is right for you?

Your goal Best first step What may cost extra
Free movies and shows Open The Roku Channel’s free catalog Advertisements; optional premium subscriptions
Free live programming Open Live TV and browse the channel guide Some specialized services or events may require subscriptions
Local broadcast stations Use an HDTV antenna with a compatible Roku TV Antenna hardware; reception varies
Premium series or broader live-TV lineups Compare a provider app or Roku Premium Subscription Recurring subscription; provider or Roku billing depending on purchase path
Roku on a non-Roku television Use a compatible Roku streaming player such as the Roku Streaming Stick 4K Streaming hardware and any chosen paid services

The practical answer to “what is free on Roku and what costs money?” is straightforward: Roku provides a free, ad-supported starting layer, while premium catalogs, live-TV replacements, some sports, and provider-specific programming may cost extra. Check the app’s details, billing seller, market availability, and cancellation route before confirming a purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Roku channels free?

Roku channels include both free and paid viewing. The Roku Channel offers thousands of free on-demand choices and 500+ free live channels in the United States, usually with advertising. Paid subscriptions, provider apps, some sports, and live-TV services can cost extra.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I add channels to Roku?

You can add an app by pressing Home, opening Store or Streaming Store, searching for the app, selecting it, and choosing Add app. Free apps can be added without a subscription; paid apps may show a trial or subscription-purchase flow.

Can I watch local channels on Roku?

A compatible Roku TV can receive local over-the-air broadcasts through an HDTV antenna connected to the Ant/Cable In port. Internet-based Roku live TV may also offer some local-news streams, but availability depends on the app and market. Roku streaming players do not automatically provide antenna reception.

Do I need a subscription for Roku?

Roku activation and account creation are free, but viewers may choose to buy premium subscriptions, provider services, rentals, or other paid content. A subscription purchased through Roku is generally managed through the Roku account; a subscription bought directly from a provider is managed by that provider.

The Bottom Line

For U.S. viewers, start with The Roku Channel’s free catalog and Live TV guide. Add an antenna only when local broadcast channels are the goal, and treat every premium subscription as a separate purchase whose billing and cancellation depend on whether Roku or the provider sold it.
