ESPN+ / NHL Power Play is the best starting point for out-of-market games, but local teams and national exclusives require separate access. Your team, ZIP code, and the game’s network assignment determine the correct setup.
This guide covers the 2025–26 NHL season and focuses on official U.S. distribution. It compares coverage and fit rather than claiming hands-on testing of stream quality or app performance.
Quick verdict
There is no single U.S. streaming service that carries every NHL game in the 2025–26 season. The right choice depends on the kind of game you want:
- Out-of-market games: Start with ESPN+ and NHL Power Play on the ESPN App.
- National games: Check whether the game is assigned to ESPN, ABC, ESPN+, Hulu, or TNT Sports, then use the corresponding service or authenticated app.
- Your local team: Use the NHL’s official ZIP-code broadcast lookup and your team’s current “where to watch” page before subscribing.
- The broadest coverage: Combine your local-market option with ESPN+ / NHL Power Play and access to the relevant national networks.
This is a U.S.-focused rights and service guide for the 2025–26 season. It does not claim hands-on testing of picture quality, buffering, latency, devices, or blackout behavior. Those factors can also vary by location, internet connection, device, and app version.

Best NHL streaming service by viewing goal
| What you want to watch | Best starting point | Why it fits | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most games from a team outside your local market | ESPN+ / NHL Power Play | The NHL’s 2025–26 schedule announcement lists more than 1,050 out-of-market games through NHL Power Play on the ESPN App. | Local blackouts, national exclusives, and some NHL Network games can keep individual games unavailable. |
| Nationally televised games | ESPN, ABC, ESPN+, Hulu, and TNT Sports access | The national schedule is spread across those outlets, with different games assigned to different networks and apps. | No single base subscription should be assumed to include every national game or live sports channel. |
| Games from the team in your home market | Your team’s regional broadcaster or direct-to-consumer app | Local rights differ by club. Some teams use regional sports networks, while others also offer free over-the-air broadcasts or team-specific streaming apps. | Eligibility is determined by territory, usually using your ZIP code. ESPN+ generally blacks out local games. |
| As many games as possible | A combination of local access, national-network access, and ESPN+ | This covers the three separate rights categories: local, national, and out-of-market. | It costs more and still is not an absolute every-game guarantee. |
How NHL streaming rights work in the United States
1. Out-of-market games: ESPN+ and NHL Power Play
If you live outside the local broadcast territory of the team you follow, ESPN+ / NHL Power Play is the most useful place to begin. The NHL’s U.S. viewing guide directs out-of-market fans to NHL Center Ice and identifies ESPN+ as the streaming route. For 2025–26, the league describes that inventory as NHL Power Play on the ESPN App.
The distinction matters because the branding a viewer sees may depend on the current ESPN app and NHL presentation. At publication, check the NHL schedule and ESPN’s current product labels rather than relying on an older reference to NHL Center Ice.
Power Play is designed for a large volume of regular-season games outside your local market. It is not a promise that every NHL game appears there. A game may be unavailable because it is:
- subject to a local blackout in the team’s home territory;
- assigned to a national partner such as ESPN, ABC, or TNT Sports;
- carried through a specific NHL Network arrangement; or
- restricted by a market or territory rule.
The NHL specifically notes that certain NHL Network games are not available on ESPN+. Check the individual game listing before assuming that an ESPN+ subscription will provide access.

National games are separate from the ordinary out-of-market package. The 2025–26 national schedule includes 172 regular-season games across ABC, ESPN, ESPN+, Hulu, and TNT Sports.
For U.S. viewers, the main national ecosystems are:
- ESPN and the ESPN App: ESPN broadcasts and certain ESPN+ games are delivered through ESPN’s apps and services. ABC games are also available through the ESPN App according to the NHL’s viewing guide.
- Hulu: The league lists ESPN+ broadcasts as streamable in Hulu as well as ESPN+. Do not assume that every Hulu plan includes every live sports event; verify the current plan and the specific game listing.
- TNT Sports: TNT games are distributed through TNT and the applicable Watch TNT / Max app paths. The service and authentication requirements can change, so confirm the current listing before game day.
- Max: Max’s U.S. documentation says live sports, including select NHL events, are included with Standard and Premium plans. That does not mean Max replaces ESPN+, supplies local games everywhere, or carries every nationally televised NHL game.
The practical rule is simple: look up the game first, then identify the network and the subscription tier that carries it. Buying ESPN+ alone will not automatically provide ESPN, ABC, or TNT Sports access for every nationally distributed game.
3. Local games: the team and your ZIP code decide
Local-market rights are the part most likely to make a seemingly simple streaming recommendation wrong. The NHL’s official broadcast-area lookup lists different local outlets for different clubs, including NESN for Boston, MSG Buffalo for Buffalo, FanDuel Sports Network South for Carolina, Chicago Sports Network for Chicago, and Altitude Sports for Colorado.

Why local NHL streaming is so fragmented
Team-specific arrangements show why there cannot be one universal local-market answer:
- New Jersey Devils: The Devils say MSG Networks produces most of their 2025–26 local games. Viewers without traditional pay television can purchase access through the Gotham Sports App, subject to the applicable market rules.
- Tampa Bay Lightning: The club lists free over-the-air, cable, satellite, and digital streaming options, including a subscription through the Lightning app.
- Vegas Golden Knights: The team says 69 regionally available games are also streamed live on KnightTime+ within the club’s television territory.
- Florida Panthers: Locally produced games are available through the Scripps Sports local broadcast network and PanthersPlus.TV, according to the team.
- Anaheim Ducks: The Ducks say local games are available free on Victory+ within the regional territory. Nationally broadcast games are distributed separately.
- Chicago Blackhawks: Locally broadcast games are available through the CHSN app and website, with additional access through several cable and streaming providers.
These are examples, not a league-wide template. A team-owned app that is free in one market may be unavailable outside that territory, while another club may require a regional sports network subscription or a live-TV package.
What to subscribe to in common situations
If you follow a team that is not local to you
Start with ESPN+ / NHL Power Play. It is the strongest fit for a fan who wants a high volume of regular-season games from an out-of-market team. Next, identify the team’s nationally televised games and confirm whether they require ESPN, ABC, Hulu, TNT Sports, or another listed outlet.
Do not use a VPN or a changed billing address as a substitute for checking the service’s rules. Blackout restrictions are part of the rights agreement, and availability can depend on the location associated with your account and device.
If you live in your favorite team’s market
Start with the local broadcaster, not ESPN+. Enter your ZIP code in the NHL’s official broadcast lookup, then follow the team’s current local-viewing instructions. ESPN+ is generally an out-of-market product, so it should not be treated as the solution for games that are locally available through an RSN, local station, or team app.
You may still want ESPN+ for other teams’ out-of-market games, plus access to the national networks for games excluded from the local package.
If you only care about nationally televised games
Track the NHL schedule and subscribe only to the services that match the networks carrying the games you want. ESPN+, Hulu, and TNT Sports are not interchangeable, and a general entertainment subscription should not be assumed to include live sports.

If you want the broadest practical coverage
Use a three-part checklist:
- Local: Buy or activate the service that carries your home-market team.
- Out of market: Add ESPN+ / NHL Power Play if you want games from teams outside your territory.
- National: Add the appropriate ESPN/ABC and TNT Sports access for games that are nationally exclusive.
A live-TV streaming bundle may combine some national networks, local channels, and regional sports networks, but its lineup must be checked by ZIP code. Even a broad bundle may not include every regional network or every game in every market.
Blackouts and other NHL streaming catches
Local blackouts
A local game can be unavailable in an out-of-market service because the local broadcaster owns the rights in your territory. This is why ESPN+ is not a replacement for your team’s regional service when you live near that team.
National exclusives
When a game is assigned to a national outlet, it may not appear in the ordinary out-of-market listing. Look at the schedule’s network designation before concluding that a game is missing from your account.
NHL Network exclusions
The NHL says some NHL Network games are not available on ESPN+. This is a specific exception worth checking because an out-of-market subscription can otherwise create the expectation that every regular-season game is included.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPlan and app differences
Even when a service carries the right network, the plan tier matters. Live sports may be limited to certain plans, and an app’s availability can differ across smart TVs, streaming sticks, phones, browsers, and game consoles. Confirm the plan’s live-TV features and supported device before subscribing.
How to check availability before you pay
- Identify your market: Use the NHL’s official ZIP-code broadcast-area lookup.
- Confirm the team’s local source: Check the team’s official “where to watch” page, especially if it lists a team app, RSN, free broadcast network, or regional provider.
- Check the NHL schedule: Note whether the game is listed for ESPN, ABC, ESPN+, Hulu, TNT Sports, NHL Network, or a local outlet.
- Verify the plan: Read the current service page for live-sports inclusion, supported devices, and authentication requirements. A basic entertainment tier may not include the live game.
- Check blackouts and territory language: Look for local-market restrictions and the ZIP codes or geographic area covered by a direct-to-consumer service.
- Recheck close to publication or purchase: Prices, plan names, rights, app labels, and free-trial policies can change during a season.
Do you need a streaming device?
The Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen) is another 4K streaming-stick option; Amazon documents Wi-Fi 6E support for that model. The same limitation applies: hardware does not determine NHL rights, and app availability and service compatibility should be verified separately.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A streaming stick can make app access easier, but it cannot bypass blackouts or turn a local game into an out-of-market game. It solves a device-interface problem, not a broadcast-rights problem.

| Live-TV streaming bundles | The exact local channels, ESPN networks, TNT Sports channels, and regional sports networks available at the reader’s address. |
Because these details are volatile, a trustworthy 2026 buying guide should refresh this table immediately before publication rather than preserve a dated price list that may mislead readers.
Bottom line for 2026
For most out-of-market NHL fans, ESPN+ / NHL Power Play is the logical first subscription because it provides the league’s large out-of-market inventory. It is not an every-game pass. For a local fan, the best service is the one identified by the NHL ZIP-code lookup and the team’s official broadcast page. National games require separate attention to ESPN, ABC, Hulu, and TNT Sports. The broadest setup combines all three access types, while a Roku Streaming Stick 4K can make compatible apps easier to use without providing the subscriptions themselves.

Does ESPN+ include every NHL game?
No. ESPN+ and NHL Power Play provide a large out-of-market inventory, but local blackouts, nationally exclusive games, and certain NHL Network games can prevent individual games from appearing there.
How do I find the right service for my local NHL team?
Use the NHL’s official ZIP-code broadcast-area lookup, then confirm the result on your team’s current “where to watch” page. Local options can include a regional sports network, a team-owned app, a free over-the-air station, or a market-specific live-TV provider.
Does a Roku Streaming Stick 4K include NHL games?
No. Roku Streaming Stick 4K is hardware for accessing compatible apps on a television. It does not include ESPN+, NHL Power Play, Max, Hulu, local-game rights, or any other NHL subscription.
Can Max replace ESPN+ for NHL streaming?
Not necessarily. Max documentation says Standard and Premium plans include live sports, including select NHL events, but Max does not replace ESPN+, local-market services, or every national NHL outlet. Check the specific game and plan before subscribing.
What is the best setup for watching the most NHL games?
For the broadest practical coverage, combine the local service for your home-market team with ESPN+ / NHL Power Play for out-of-market games and the relevant ESPN/ABC and TNT Sports access for national games. Even that combination is subject to rights and blackout rules.
The Bottom Line
The short answer: Choose ESPN+ / NHL Power Play for out-of-market games, your team’s regional broadcaster or app for local games, and the appropriate ESPN/ABC and TNT Sports access for national exclusives. Check the NHL schedule, ZIP-code lookup, current plan tiers, and blackout rules before paying—no single U.S. service guarantees every NHL game.
