Robert Downey Jr. returning as Doctor Doom was the biggest announcement at San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Marvel Studios also brought back Joe and Anthony Russo to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, while the rest of the convention delivered major Fantastic Four, Marvel Comics, DC Comics, Star Trek, and collectibles news.
This roundup covers the event’s major announcements and reveals from July 25–28, 2024. It does not claim to list every announcement from the hundreds of panels and exhibitor presentations held at SDCC.
The defining announcement of San Diego Comic-Con 2024 was Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe—not as Tony Stark, but as Doctor Doom. Marvel Studios also announced that Joe and Anthony Russo would return to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Beyond Marvel’s film news, the July 25–28 convention brought the official title and cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, major Marvel and DC Comics projects, several Star Trek updates, and a broad range of toy and collectible reveals.

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Doom bombshell
Marvel Studios used its Hall H presentation to deliver the convention’s biggest piece of news: Robert Downey Jr. will play Victor von Doom in the MCU. Marvel specifically presented this as a new role, not a return as Iron Man. That distinction matters. Downey’s Tony Stark was central to the first decade of the MCU, but the SDCC announcement did not confirm that Doom is Tony Stark, an alternate-universe version of him, or any other speculative connection.
Marvel also confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo would direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The brothers previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Their return, combined with Downey’s casting as Doom, made the announcement significant on both sides of the camera.
The reveal positioned Doctor Doom as the central threat around Marvel’s next major Avengers films. It did not, by itself, establish the story’s plot, Doom’s relationship to the Fantastic Four, or whether any other actors would play alternate versions of familiar MCU characters. Those possibilities remained speculation rather than confirmed SDCC announcements.
Other Marvel Studios Hall H coverage
Marvel’s official SDCC coverage also included dedicated material for Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*. Both were part of the studio’s Hall H presentation, but the supplied announcement material does not establish a separate headline reveal substantial enough to place them alongside the Downey and Russo announcements.
Deadpool & Wolverine received a Hall H celebration as well. That was primarily a promotional and fan-facing event connected to the film, so it is more accurate to describe it as a convention celebration than as the announcement of a new film or franchise direction.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps gets its official title and cast
Marvel officially revealed the title The Fantastic Four: First Steps during its Hall H presentation. The film’s principal cast appeared at the convention:
- Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic
- Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman
- Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing
- Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch
Marvel also emphasized the movie’s futuristic, 1960s-inspired setting. That visual and period design was one of the clearest pieces of creative information presented at SDCC. The title, cast, and setting were confirmed convention material; theories about the film’s villains, plot, alternate timelines, or exact place in the wider MCU should not be treated as announcements unless supported by a separate official statement.

Marvel Comics: Doom takes over, Spider-Man gets eight lives
Marvel’s publishing announcements gave Doctor Doom a second, entirely separate role in the SDCC news cycle. At the Comics: Next Big Thing panel, Marvel announced One World Under Doom, a major storyline beginning in 2025.
The storyline places Doom at the center of a broad Marvel Comics status-quo shift. It should be read as a comics initiative rather than a tie-in announcement for Avengers: Doomsday. The two projects share a character and a Doom-focused title, but one belongs to Marvel’s publishing line and the other to Marvel Studios.
8 Deaths of Spider-Man
Marvel also announced 8 Deaths of Spider-Man, a storyline beginning in Amazing Spider-Man in November 2024. The premise gives Peter Parker a Doom-inspired suit and eight extra lives, while Doctor Doom occupies the role of Sorcerer Supreme.
That setup makes the story one of the clearest comic-book extensions of the convention’s Doom theme. It also gives readers a specific starting point: the storyline begins in Amazing Spider-Man, rather than launching as an unrelated film adaptation or one-shot convention special.
Laura Kinney: Wolverine
The Women of Marvel panel announced an ongoing Laura Kinney: Wolverine series by writer Erica Schultz and artist Giada Belviso. The series was scheduled to begin in December 2024.
The announcement was notable for putting Laura Kinney at the center of an ongoing Wolverine title and for expanding Marvel’s mutant-focused publishing slate during a period of major line-wide change.
Read the comics behind the announcement: If you want a physical starting point, look for a currently available Doctor Doom comic book or collected edition. Check the edition, seller, price, and stock before buying; a related volume is not automatically an official SDCC exclusive.
Other Marvel Comics announcements
Marvel’s official SDCC event coverage also listed several additional projects and publishing directions:
- West Coast Avengers
- A new TVA comic
- An all-new Psylocke solo series
- A new direction for Deadpool
- A new Spider-Girl project
- Further stories from the Ultimate Universe
- Additional material connected to The High Republic
These projects did not all receive the same level of detail in the headline presentation, but together they show the breadth of Marvel’s publishing announcements. The convention was not only about the next Avengers films; it also established several new or refreshed entry points for comic readers.

DC Comics brings back a larger Justice League
Justice League Unlimited
DC’s biggest publishing reveal was Justice League Unlimited, announced during the publisher’s Absolute Power panel. The series was written by Mark Waid and drawn by Dan Mora.
The concept expands the Justice League beyond a small core roster, bringing a much wider range of DC heroes into the team’s orbit. DC’s subsequent title information gave the series a November 27, 2024 on-sale date and described Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and a larger coalition confronting threats after the events of Absolute Power and the DC All In Special.
That makes Justice League Unlimited more than a simple team revival. It was presented as a large-scale publishing initiative designed to reassert the Justice League as a broad shared-universe institution.
The New Gods, Justice Society, and Absolute Flash
DC’s official post-event roundup also identified three other significant projects:
- The New Gods, by Ram V and Evan Cagle
- A new Justice Society series, by Jeff Lemire and Diego Olortegui
- Absolute Flash, by Jeff Lemire and Nick Robles
These announcements reflected two complementary DC strategies. The publisher was restoring a recognizable, expansive core-universe team with Justice League Unlimited while continuing to develop the reimagined Absolute line, including its version of the Flash.
Superman & Lois and DC television
DC’s SDCC coverage also included television news, particularly the final season of Superman & Lois. Producers discussed continuing the story after the previous season’s Doomsday cliffhanger and addressed the possibility of Arrowverse cameos.
This belongs in a separate television category rather than alongside DC’s publishing announcements. The official SDCC roundup was strongest on comic-book titles; the Superman & Lois material was a discussion of the show’s final season and possible story elements, not the announcement of a new DC Studios film.
Star Trek delivers a multi-series franchise update
Star Trek did not rely on one single blockbuster reveal. Instead, its Hall H presentation covered several parts of the franchise at once: Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, Starfleet Academy, and Section 31.

Cillian O’Sullivan joins Strange New Worlds
The post-event recap reported that Cillian O’Sullivan was cast as Dr. Roger Korby in the upcoming season of Strange New Worlds. Attendees also saw an extended clip from season three.
The clip was a preview of an already announced series season, not a new series announcement. That distinction is useful when sorting the event’s news: footage and clips can be major fan moments without representing a newly approved project.
Lower Decks heads into its final season
Star Trek: Lower Decks season five was identified as the show’s final season. At the time of the SDCC presentation, its premiere was scheduled for October 24, 2024, with two episodes debuting in the United States and internationally.

Not all of SDCC’s important announcements came from studios or comic publishers. Hasbro’s official convention announcement described product showcases and fan experiences spanning Transformers, Marvel, G.I. Joe, Beyblade, Star Wars, and other properties.
Those reveals belong in the collector and exhibitor category. A product display, booth experience, or convention item is not automatically a new film, television series, or comic-book announcement. It is also important not to call a product an official SDCC exclusive unless the individual product announcement explicitly uses that designation.

What was announced—and what was only previewed?
SDCC coverage often combines formal announcements with trailers, clips, artwork, cast appearances, merchandise, and panel discussion. Separating those categories makes the roundup more accurate:
- Announcement: A new film, series, comic, casting decision, publishing line, or other project formally disclosed at the event.
- Preview: Footage, a trailer, a clip, artwork, or a demonstration for a project that was already announced.
- Exhibitor product: A toy, collectible, booth item, or convention offering promoted around the event.
By that standard, Downey’s Doctor Doom casting, the Russo brothers’ return, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, One World Under Doom, Justice League Unlimited, and the Cillian O’Sullivan casting were formal announcements. The Strange New Worlds season-three footage and the Deadpool & Wolverine Hall H celebration were important convention moments, but they should not be inflated into entirely new franchise announcements.
Why San Diego Comic-Con 2024 mattered
San Diego Comic-Con 2024 was defined by the return of familiar names in new forms. Marvel brought back Downey and the Russos while replacing Iron Man with Doctor Doom as the focus of its most consequential reveal. The Fantastic Four received a carefully defined new identity through its title, cast, and retro-futurist setting. Marvel Comics made Doom central to its own publishing plans, while DC used Justice League Unlimited and the Absolute line to signal both restoration and reinvention.

Star Trek offered a different model: a coordinated update across multiple shows and films, with a new casting announcement, season-three footage, and the final-season premiere information for Lower Decks. Hasbro’s presence added the collector dimension that is inseparable from Comic-Con.
In short, the convention’s major news was not one uniform slate. It was a combination of blockbuster casting, returning creative teams, comics-wide publishing initiatives, franchise previews, television updates, and product showcases—led by Doctor Doom’s arrival at the center of Marvel’s next era.
