35 Best Swordsmen in Anime, Ranked

Mihawk, Zoro, Guts, Kenshin, Saber, Ichigo, and 29 more: a swordsmanship-first ranking of anime’s greatest blade users, with hybrid powers and cross-universe caveats explained.

Dracule Mihawk is the best pure swordsman in anime for this ranking, because One Piece explicitly frames him as the world’s strongest swordsman. Roronoa Zoro follows as the defining modern swordsman protagonist, with Guts, Himura Kenshin, Saber, and Ichigo rounding out the top six.

This is not an official universal power scale. It is an editorial synthesis that weighs demonstrated sword skill first, then combat ceiling and quality of opponents, consistency across the story, and cultural or narrative influence. Supernatural abilities matter, but a character does not automatically rank higher simply because their sword is paired with magic, spiritual energy, Haki, anti-magic, or a virtual combat system.

How this ranking works

There is no official cross-franchise power scale that can place Mihawk, Saber, Guts, Kirito, and Thorfinn on one objective ladder. This is an editorial ranking built around four questions: how accomplished is the character with a blade, how high is the level of opposition they have faced, how consistently do they perform across the story, and how important or iconic are they as an anime swordsman? Demonstrated swordsmanship receives priority over unrestricted magic, energy projection, reality manipulation, or other abilities.

That distinction matters. Ichigo’s Zanpakutō, Saber’s Noble Phantasm, Kirito’s virtual sword skills, and Thorfinn’s grounded battlefield experience belong to very different combat systems. The list therefore includes pure duelists, supernatural blade users, virtual-world fighters, women who are every bit as central to their series’ swordplay, and hybrid characters whose swords are only one part of a larger arsenal.

The ranking itself remains about the characters, not merchandise.

32 Asta Black Clover Anti-magic swords Outstanding battlefield utility, not conventional fencing alone

34 Hyakkimaru Dororo Adaptive body-integrated blades A singular combat identity shaped by survival
35 Mifune Soul Eater Refined sword technique A polished mentor figure with a lower overall ceiling

The countdown: ranks 35 through 1

35. Mifune — Soul Eater

Mifune earns the final place because his appeal is almost entirely technical. He is a refined swordsman and a mentor-level combatant whose movements communicate economy rather than theatrical excess. He does not need a huge supernatural power scale to make a duel interesting: his value is in timing, spacing, and the ability to make a sword feel like a complete fighting system. He ranks below the list’s higher entries because Soul Eater gives the characters above him greater ceilings, broader feats, or more sustained centrality.

34. Hyakkimaru — Dororo

Hyakkimaru’s swordsmanship is inseparable from his unusual body and the circumstances of his life. The blades integrated into his combat style are not simply equipment; they are part of how he navigates a world that has repeatedly taken things from him. That produces an adaptive, survival-driven fighter who can respond to unfamiliar threats quickly. He is less polished than the pure technicians higher on the list, but few entries have a more distinctive relationship between body, weapon, and identity.

33. Eugeo — Sword Art Online: Alicization

Eugeo belongs here because his story is explicitly about becoming a swordsman. His training is more disciplined and deliberate than the effortless-prodigy model, and that makes his progress unusually satisfying. He learns to turn courage and determination into practical technique within the rules of the virtual world. Eugeo does not have Kirito’s breadth or Asuna’s established reputation, but his sword-centered development gives him a stronger claim than many characters whose weapons are only visual accessories.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. Asta — Black Clover

Asta is extraordinarily effective with his anti-magic swords, but effectiveness against supernatural opponents is not identical to conventional swordsmanship. His blades can negate or disrupt magic, and his physical conditioning lets him use them with remarkable force. Those properties are central to his victories, so he is ranked as a hybrid rather than as a pure dueling specialist. Within that category he is formidable: he understands how to use each weapon’s utility in motion, protect allies, and create openings that a normal swordsman could not.

31. Erza Scarlet — Fairy Tail

Erza’s greatest strength is versatility. Her armor changes and weapon selection allow her to alter range, defense, and attack pattern from one encounter to the next. That makes her extremely difficult to prepare for, and she has enough sword skill to make those changes meaningful rather than cosmetic. She is not higher because her magic and equipment transformations are inseparable from her combat results. In a swordsmanship-first ranking, adaptability counts, but it cannot be treated as the same thing as pure blade technique.

30. Kanao Tsuyuri — Demon Slayer

Kanao’s style is defined by visual precision, composure, and disciplined execution. She does not waste movement, and her controlled approach makes her an excellent example of how a relatively quiet character can be a serious swordswoman. Her placement reflects both her technical quality and the smaller body of top-level demonstrations compared with the Hashira above her. Kanao is especially compelling because her growth is not just a matter of becoming stronger; it is also about learning to make choices and act decisively.

29. Trafalgar Law — One Piece

Law carries a sword and uses it with genuine skill, but his fighting identity is built just as heavily around the Ope Ope no Mi. Inside his Room, the blade becomes part of a much larger system of spatial manipulation, surgical precision, and tactical repositioning. That makes Law a dangerous combatant and a memorable sword user, but it also explains why he sits below purer swordsmen. If the category were strongest character with a sword, he would move considerably higher; under this list’s rules, the hybrid label matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Shanks — One Piece

Shanks has the presence, experience, and Haki-enhanced combat reputation of an elite One Piece fighter. His sword is central to how he confronts major opponents, and his narrative stature makes every appearance feel like a statement about the upper limits of the world. Still, the available material does not justify assigning him a definitive universal sword title here. His placement acknowledges his extraordinary combat standing without pretending that narrative influence or Haki alone settles a pure-swordsmanship comparison.

27. Shishio Makoto — Rurouni Kenshin

Shishio is a dangerous counterpoint to Kenshin. His swordsmanship is tactical, cruel, and built around forcing an opponent into an unsustainable exchange. Experience and an instinct for exploiting physical limits make him more than a powerful attacker; he is a fighter who understands how a duel deteriorates. He ranks below Kenshin because his style is less technically complete and less restrained, but he remains one of the series’ most credible threats precisely because he turns accumulated combat knowledge into deliberate brutality.

26. Shigure Kosaka — Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple

Shigure’s ranking comes from precision rather than spectacle. She represents the kind of swordswoman who has refined fundamentals so thoroughly that every action looks simple. Her control, timing, and teaching-level understanding of technique make her a difficult opponent even before the series’ broader martial-arts exaggerations enter the discussion. She is not placed with the list’s highest supernatural ceilings, but as a technical model she deserves attention from anyone interested in how anime depicts mastery.

25. Sakata Gintoki — Gintama

Gintoki’s comedy can obscure how capable he is. When the tone turns serious, his practical swordsmanship, battlefield experience, and willingness to fight through pain become obvious. He is not a ceremonial swordsman chasing a formal title; he is a survivor who uses a blade efficiently because it is what the situation demands. That pragmatism is his advantage. He ranks below the elite specialists because his story is not consistently centered on sword competition, but his serious combat performances make a lower placement impossible to justify.

24. Yuta Okkotsu — Jujutsu Kaisen

Yuta’s katana work is real and important, especially as his technical ability develops, but it is integrated with cursed energy, copied techniques, and an unusually broad supernatural toolkit. His rapid growth makes him one of the most dangerous fighters on this list in an unrestricted battle. That is not the same as being the better swordsman. Yuta is ranked here to recognize both sides of the character: an increasingly capable blade user and a hybrid combatant whose victories cannot be separated from powers beyond sword technique.

23. Maki Zenin — Jujutsu Kaisen

Maki is one of the clearest weapon specialists in Jujutsu Kaisen, and her placement requires a version qualifier. Her capabilities and standing change significantly depending on which part of the story is being assessed, so an unsupported claim that she is simply the strongest is too broad. What remains consistent is her commitment to physical training, her ability to handle cursed tools, and her understanding of range and timing. The ranking uses the character’s demonstrated anime-era identity rather than importing every possible later ceiling.

22. Akame — Akame ga Kill!

Akame’s swordsmanship is about ending a fight before it becomes a prolonged contest. Her precision and movement are dangerous on their own, while her blade’s special ability gives every clean hit strategic importance. That makes her an excellent assassin and a highly efficient swordswoman. She ranks below characters who have demonstrated greater variety in extended duels, but she should not be mistaken for a one-trick user. Her strength lies in reading the encounter, creating the opening, and making that opening decisive.

21. Clare — Claymore

Clare’s swordsmanship develops alongside her altered nature, which gives her ranking unusual complexity. She must continually adapt to enemies who are physically superior, unpredictable, or changing form. Her resilience is not merely the ability to absorb punishment; it is the capacity to learn, adjust, and use a sword effectively under biological and psychological pressure. She does not have the effortless dominance of the highest entries, but her combination of technique, adaptability, and survival experience makes her one of anime’s most compelling warrior protagonists.

20. Thors — Vinland Saga

Thors represents a different ideal from most names on this list. His greatness is not expressed through a hunger for increasingly destructive battles, but through control, maturity, and the ability to overwhelm without losing himself to violence. He demonstrates that restraint can be evidence of superior skill rather than a lack of ambition. His placement reflects the series’ grounded combat logic: there is no need for magical escalation when footwork, timing, strength, and judgment are all operating at an exceptional level.

19. Thorfinn — Vinland Saga

Thorfinn’s early identity is shaped by battlefield violence, revenge, and a relentless desire to reach the next duel. His smaller blades and speed produce a very different kind of sword fighter from Guts or Zoro: evasive, aggressive, and built around closing distance. His ranking also has to account for his later moral transformation. Vinland Saga deliberately questions the identity of a warrior, so Thorfinn’s importance is not simply that he can fight; it is that the story makes him confront what that ability has cost.

18. Afro — Afro Samurai

Afro’s story is built around the sword, the duel, and the consequences of pursuing one opponent after another. His technique is relentless and economical, with little interest in ornament when a direct answer will do. He has the focus to continue through exhausting and psychologically punishing encounters, and his combat identity is more consistently sword-centered than that of many higher-powered characters. He ranks outside the top tier because the broader list includes fighters with more varied ceilings or deeper technical systems, not because Afro lacks credibility as a duelist.

17. Mugen — Samurai Champloo

Mugen turns unpredictability into a method. His acrobatics, improvised angles, irregular footwork, and refusal to fight according to formal expectations can make him look reckless, but the recklessness is paired with sharp instincts. He is difficult to read because he does not offer the rhythm a trained opponent expects. Mugen ranks below Jin in formal refinement, yet his unorthodox style may be the more difficult one to solve in a chaotic real-world encounter.

16. Jin — Samurai Champloo

Jin is the cleaner technician of the Samurai Champloo pair. His formal swordsmanship is controlled, economical, and built on fundamentals that remain reliable when the fight becomes dangerous. He does not depend on surprise as heavily as Mugen, and that makes his performance easier to understand but no less impressive. Jin’s placement rewards consistency and technical discipline, while recognizing that the list’s upper ranks combine similar fundamentals with extraordinary fantasy-world ceilings.

15. Asuna Yuuki — Sword Art Online

Asuna is not merely the person who stands beside Kirito. Her speed, precision, and rapier-focused combat make her one of the strongest dedicated fighters in the Sword Art Online cast. She excels at turning a narrow opening into a rapid sequence of attacks, and her reputation is supported by performance rather than by her relationship to the protagonist. Because this is a virtual-world ranking, game mechanics and system rules necessarily influence the comparison, but within that setting Asuna is a genuine peer to the series’ most celebrated swordsman.

14. Kirito — Sword Art Online

The official Sword Art Online framing calls Kirito the Black Swordsman and places high-level sword combat at the center of his identity. His single-sword ability is impressive, while his dual-wielding raises his ceiling further by demanding separate timing, positioning, and attack management. Kirito ranks here as a virtual-world swordsman, not as proof that game-system skill automatically defeats every physical or supernatural fighter. His consistency across multiple sword-centered arcs and his influence on the modern anime swordsman archetype make the placement secure.

13. Killer B — Naruto / Boruto

Killer B’s multi-blade style works because it is not a collection of ordinary sword strikes performed at once. He changes rhythm, uses unusual grips and angles, and combines the blades with movement that is difficult for a conventional opponent to predict. His swordplay is part of a much broader shinobi toolkit, but it remains distinctive enough to deserve its own recognition. He ranks above Sasuke for unconventional blade handling, while Sasuke’s greater technical breadth and story importance keep the two close.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Sasuke Uchiha — Naruto / Boruto

Sasuke’s sword is not incidental equipment. Official franchise material identifies Uchiha-style sword techniques and names Sasuke among their users, supporting his inclusion as a genuine sword fighter rather than a character who happens to carry a blade. His technique benefits from exceptional perception, speed, tactical intelligence, and the ability to combine kenjutsu with ninjutsu. That combination makes him extremely dangerous in an unrestricted fight. He is held below the top sword specialists because his most decisive tools extend well beyond swordsmanship.

11. Kyojuro Rengoku — Demon Slayer

Rengoku’s Flame Breathing produces some of the most forceful offensive swordplay in Demon Slayer. His attacks are direct, committed, and powerful, but the spectacle works because it is backed by discipline and clear tactical judgment. His performance under extreme pressure shows an ability to maintain form and purpose when a lesser fighter would panic. Rengoku narrowly trails Giyu because Giyu’s style is more economical and repeatable, but his intensity, conviction, and high-end performance make him one of the series’ defining swordsmen.

10. Giyu Tomioka — Demon Slayer

Giyu combines efficient Water Breathing technique with calm judgment. He is not simply strong because he occupies the Hashira rank; his placement comes from how consistently he makes sound decisions, controls distance, and executes under pressure. The official Demon Slayer character material confirms his place among the principal figures, while the story establishes the discipline behind that status. Giyu’s swordsmanship is less flamboyant than Rengoku’s, but that restraint is exactly why he feels so dependable in a ranking that values repeatable performance.

9. Yoriichi Tsugikuni — Demon Slayer

Yoriichi is ranked this high for the near-mythic height of his swordsmanship and Breathing technique. His influence on the history of Demon Slayer makes him a foundational figure, and the character is presented as an almost unreachable standard. There is an important limitation: much of Yoriichi’s reputation is historical legend or retrospective testimony rather than a long sequence of fully depicted fights. He therefore ranks below the list’s top four, whose abilities are supported by more sustained on-screen characterization, while still remaining the strongest pure ceiling in his series.

8. Byakuya Kuchiki — Bleach

Byakuya’s strength is control. His mastery of Senbonzakura gives him a vast field of options, but the important point is how precisely he manages those options: offense, defense, spacing, feints, and pressure can all flow from the same Zanpakutō. He is composed without being passive and analytical without losing the ability to finish a fight. The official Bleach character material documents his rank, weapon, and combat history, supporting his place among the franchise’s most accomplished blade users.

7. Kenpachi Zaraki — Bleach

Kenpachi is the opposite of Byakuya in temperament but not in impact. He relies on instinct, physical pressure, and a hunger for opponents who can force him to reveal more of himself. His unusual restraint is a major part of the ranking: Kenpachi often limits his own power or fighting efficiency because he wants the battle to last. That makes his demonstrated skill difficult to measure conventionally. He ranks below Ichigo because Ichigo’s sword journey is more consistently developed, but Kenpachi may be the more naturally terrifying duelist.

6. Ichigo Kurosaki — Bleach

Ichigo is one of anime’s central sword-fighter protagonists. As a substitute Soul Reaper, his identity is repeatedly pulled back toward the blade, and his Zanpakutō evolves as he confronts new aspects of himself. He has an enormous supernatural ceiling, but his placement is not based on power alone. Ichigo repeatedly learns to read stronger opponents, recover from defeat, and make his swordsmanship work inside a complicated spiritual combat system. That combination of consistency, growth, and cultural influence earns him the highest Bleach position here.

5. Saber / Artoria Pendragon — Fate/stay night

The official Fate material identifies Saber as a sword-wielding heroic spirit and the premier Saber-class servant. Her technical foundation, battlefield judgment, and legendary weapon make her an obvious top-five candidate. The qualification is that Saber is not a normal human fencer. Her supernatural physical abilities, magical energy, and Noble Phantasm complicate any attempt to compare her directly with Kenshin or Jin. She ranks fifth because her swordsmanship remains exceptional even after separating the blade skill from the wider heroic-spirit package.

4. Himura Kenshin — Rurouni Kenshin

Kenshin is one of anime’s clearest examples of speed and technical sophistication overcoming the apparent limitations of his equipment. His reverse-blade sword imposes a dramatic constraint: he is expected to defeat opponents without using a normal sharpened edge. That makes precision, timing, footwork, and knowledge of anatomy central to every serious encounter. Kenshin’s past as a legendary assassin also gives him a deep understanding of lethal combat, while his present ethics force him to solve fights through control rather than simple execution.

3. Guts — Berserk

Guts wields a weapon that should be too large and unwieldy for ordinary swordsmanship, yet he turns it into a precise instrument through strength, timing, and relentless repetition. His ranking is built on overwhelming greatsword control, endurance, battlefield adaptation, and sustained performance against opponents far beyond normal human limits. He is not the most elegant technician on the list, but elegance is not the only measure of skill. Guts understands how to make a massive blade work in close quarters, against groups, and under conditions designed to break the body.

Rank #4

2. Roronoa Zoro — One Piece

Zoro is the defining modern anime swordsman protagonist. His three-sword style is immediately recognizable, but the real reason he ranks second is the consistency of his ambition: he is explicitly pursuing the position of the world’s greatest swordsman, and training is a permanent part of his character rather than a temporary plot device. Official One Piece material describes both his swordsman identity and his three-sword techniques. Zoro’s supernatural world and Haki complicate the comparison, yet swordsmanship remains the center of his combat identity.

1. Dracule Mihawk — One Piece

Mihawk is the cleanest answer to the question of who best represents pure swordsmanship in anime. One Piece frames him as the world’s strongest swordsman, giving him an explicit in-universe benchmark that most other characters on this list lack. His calm, exacting approach contrasts with Zoro’s still-developing ambition: Mihawk is not chasing the title from below; he is the standard Zoro must surpass. Cross-franchise matchups remain impossible to settle objectively, but within a swordsmanship-first editorial ranking, Mihawk is the most defensible number one.

Why the top six are separated from the rest

The top six represent six different answers to the idea of mastery. Mihawk is the explicit pure-swordsmanship champion. Zoro is the aspirational protagonist whose entire path points toward that benchmark. Guts proves that a gigantic weapon can be controlled with both power and precision. Kenshin represents technical speed under an ethical and mechanical constraint. Saber is the idealized heroic swordswoman whose skill is inseparable from legend. Ichigo makes the sword a vehicle for identity, growth, and repeated reinvention.

They are not interchangeable. A formal duel with equalized physical statistics might favor Kenshin or Mihawk. A battlefield against supernatural enemies could reward Guts or Ichigo. A ruleset that allows a heroic spirit’s full abilities changes Saber’s prospects entirely. Zoro’s answer depends heavily on which point in the continuing story is used. The ranking places them in an editorial order, not a claim that one universal set of rules proves every result.

Which anime swordsman would win?

For pure swordsmanship: Mihawk is the best answer because his franchise gives him the clearest relevant title. Kenshin is the strongest challenger if the contest emphasizes technical speed, precision, and a restricted weapon. Zoro is the obvious future-oriented choice, but ranking him above Mihawk would require treating ambition and ongoing development as completed achievement.

For an unrestricted cross-universe fight: there is no reliable single winner. Saber brings heroic-spirit abilities, Ichigo and the other Bleach characters operate through spiritual power, Zoro and Shanks use Haki, Asta’s anti-magic changes the rules, Law can manipulate space within his Room, and Kirito’s abilities are governed by a virtual system. Whoever wins under one ruleset may lose under another. Even the question of whether fighters from different spiritual or virtual systems can perceive and damage one another would need to be decided first.

For iconic influence: the contest is between characters such as Kenshin, Zoro, Guts, Ichigo, and Kirito. Their importance reaches beyond individual feats: they helped define how later anime presents the swordsman as a protagonist, rival, tragic warrior, disciplined master, or aspirational hero. Influence is included in this list, but it does not override demonstrated skill.

What this list deliberately does not do

  • It does not treat the strongest supernatural fighter who happens to carry a sword as the best swordsman.
  • It does not convert every magical weapon, energy attack, or special ability into ordinary fencing skill.
  • It does not assume that unfinished adaptations have already shown a character’s ultimate ceiling.
  • It does not treat a title from one franchise as automatically comparable to a title from another.
  • It does include anime television series, films, and adaptations of manga or light novels under the broad category of anime.

That is why Law, Yuta, Erza, Asta, and Saber are labeled as hybrids, why Yoriichi’s legendary status comes with a limitation, and why Shanks is included without assigning him a definitive sword title that the evidence does not establish. A fair ranking should make those distinctions visible rather than hide them behind a single power number.

Collecting and watching the swordsmen

This list is designed to send readers in two directions: back to the scenes that established each character’s reputation and toward licensed merchandise for the characters who stayed with them. A figure or display collectible tied to Zoro, Kirito, or another ranked swordsman can be a better keepsake than an unlicensed weapon replica because it celebrates the character and the series without pretending to be functional equipment.

For viewing, availability varies by country, subscription tier, licensing window, and whether a reader wants the television adaptation, a film, or a particular spin-off. Check a current regional catalog before subscribing; this ranking does not establish that every featured title is available through one anime streaming service.

Final verdict

Mihawk is the number one pure-swordsmanship pick, Zoro is the defining rising protagonist, and Guts, Kenshin, Saber, and Ichigo complete the strongest top tier for different reasons. The most honest answer, however, depends on the question being asked. Choose Mihawk for the clearest swordsmanship benchmark, Kenshin for technical finesse, Guts for greatsword mastery under impossible pressure, Saber for legendary heroic combat, Ichigo for supernatural sword-fighter growth, and Zoro for the enduring ideal of a swordsman still climbing toward the summit.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Dracule Mihawk is the most defensible number one when swordsmanship comes first. Zoro is the defining modern contender, while Guts, Kenshin, Saber, and Ichigo occupy the elite tier for very different kinds of blade mastery. There is no universal winner across franchises unless the rules first decide how spiritual power, magic, Haki, anti-magic, and virtual systems interact.
