50 Cent did not publicly disclose a direct source for the Diddy footage. The previously unseen recordings were used in Netflix’s four-part documentary Sean Combs: The Reckoning, released in 2025. The production says the material came to director Alexandria Stapleton’s team and was legally obtained. Michael Oberlies, a videographer who worked on another Combs project, later alleged that a freelancer passed it along without authorization.
Short answer: 50 Cent has never publicly identified a person who gave him the Diddy footage. The videos were used in Netflix’s four-part 2025 documentary Sean Combs: The Reckoning, where Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson is credited as an executive producer. Director Alexandria Stapleton says the footage came to her team, was obtained legally, and was properly cleared. Michael Oberlies, a videographer who says he worked on a separate project about Sean Combs, later claimed that a freelancer who temporarily replaced him passed the material to the Netflix production without authorization.
Those accounts leave the exact source and chain of custody unresolved. The public record does not establish that 50 Cent personally bought, stole, or leaked the videos.
Which Diddy footage is the question about?
The question generally refers to previously unseen documentary footage featured in Sean Combs: The Reckoning, released globally on Netflix on December 2, 2025. It is not the 2016 hotel-surveillance video involving Cassie Ventura that CNN obtained and published in May 2024.

The Netflix footage was filmed during a particularly important period: the six days before Combs’s arrest in September 2024. Some of the most discussed material was recorded at New York’s Park Hyatt on September 10, 2024. In it, Combs speaks with defense lawyer Marc Agnifilo about his legal and public-relations strategy. Other scenes show him reacting to Dawn Richard’s lawsuit, discussing public messaging with associates, directing an apparent substitute videographer, and greeting people in Harlem.
The recordings are significant because they show Combs while he was under federal investigation and trying to manage his public image. They were presented as documentary-style recordings made while he knew cameras were present—not as covert courtroom evidence or secret surveillance obtained by 50 Cent.
What Netflix and the filmmakers say
Netflix’s official materials identify Jackson as an executive producer and Stapleton as the documentary’s director. The production’s public account is that the footage was shot with Combs’s knowledge and later reached Stapleton’s team through a source whose identity has been protected.
Stapleton has said the filmmakers obtained the material legally and had the necessary rights to use it. She also described Combs as someone who had spent years filming himself and documenting his life. That explanation suggests the footage originated within Combs’s broader media operation or among people working around it, but it does not reveal exactly who supplied it or what agreement transferred the rights.
In other words, the filmmakers have asserted that they had a lawful chain of rights, but they have not publicly disclosed the transaction, the supplier’s name, or every step by which the recordings moved from the original filming project to Netflix.
The videographer’s competing account
Michael Oberlies, who said he had worked for more than two years on a project profiling Combs, disputed online theories that the footage changed hands because of a payment or contract dispute. In a statement reported by Rolling Stone on December 11, 2025, Oberlies said the material was not released by him or by anyone authorized to handle Combs’s files.
Oberlies claimed that a freelancer covered for him for three days while he was out of state and that this freelancer was responsible for the footage reaching the Netflix production. He described the use of material intended for his project as unethical and unacceptable.
That allegation offers a possible route by which the footage could have left the original production. It is not, however, an independently adjudicated finding. The freelancer identified in Oberlies’s account had not publicly responded at the time of the Rolling Stone report, and the account does not by itself prove that Netflix or Jackson knowingly acquired unlawfully released material.

Why hasn’t 50 Cent named the source?
When asked how he obtained the footage, Jackson declined to identify the source. His explanation was essentially that journalists generally do not reveal their sources.
That answer is important because it complicates the wording of the headline. Although Jackson is a prominent producer of the documentary, the public evidence does not show that he personally negotiated for the recordings or received them directly from a seller. The more accurate description is that the documentary team obtained the material and that Jackson, as executive producer, has chosen not to disclose the source.
Calling the videos “50 Cent’s footage” can therefore be misleading. They are footage used by a production with which he is associated, not material whose direct ownership or acquisition by Jackson has been publicly demonstrated.
Why the footage became controversial
Combs’s representative accused Netflix of using stolen footage that had never been authorized for release and called the documentary a “shameful hit piece.” The representative said Combs had been collecting footage for decades in order to tell his own story and argued that Netflix’s use of the recordings was unfair and illegal.
Recommended Free Tools
Stapleton rejected that characterization, maintaining that the footage was lawfully obtained and properly cleared. These are opposing public positions. The available reporting does not establish a final judicial ruling determining who owned the recordings, whether a freelancer exceeded their authority, or whether Netflix’s license was valid.
Before the series premiered, Combs’s lawyers reportedly sent Netflix a cease-and-desist letter threatening legal action over the footage. Reporting available as of August 12, 2026, said Combs had not filed the threatened action against Netflix. Litigation status can change, so that point should be rechecked whenever this article is updated.
50 Cent’s role—and why it matters
Jackson’s involvement is relevant context. He is a longtime public adversary of Combs and served as an executive producer, while Stapleton directed the series. That relationship does not establish anything about the footage’s provenance, but it is part of the documentary’s perspective and worth keeping in mind when evaluating its framing.
It also explains why the question is often phrased as “How did 50 Cent get the footage?” Jackson’s name attracts attention, but the production’s public explanation places the acquisition with Stapleton’s filmmaking team rather than documenting a direct handoff to Jackson.

What can—and cannot—be said with confidence
- Established: The footage appeared in Netflix’s Sean Combs: The Reckoning, and Jackson was an executive producer.
- Established by the production’s account: The recordings were made with Combs’s knowledge and were legally obtained and cleared for use.
- Publicly reported but disputed: Oberlies says a freelancer who temporarily covered for him passed along material intended for another Combs project.
- Not established: The identity of the source, a direct payment by 50 Cent, a deliberate leak by Jackson, or a final court ruling that the Netflix footage was stolen.
The safest summary is: the source has never been publicly identified. Stapleton says the footage came to her team and was legally obtained, while Oberlies says a temporary replacement videographer released footage intended for another project. The full route to Netflix remains confidential and contested.

The material was supplied to the team behind Netflix’s Sean Combs: The Reckoning; director Alexandria Stapleton says it was obtained legally, while videographer Michael Oberlies says a freelancer passed along footage intended for another project. Because the supplier and complete chain of custody remain confidential and disputed, claims that 50 Cent bought, stole, or leaked the videos go beyond the available evidence.
