The Late Show with Stephen Colbert returned to CBS on Tuesday, September 2, 2025. The broadcast was the show’s Season 11 premiere after a scheduled three-week late-summer hiatus. It was also the start of the program’s final season—not a renewal or permanent revival.
Why September 2, 2025 mattered
The return followed the show’s usual end-of-summer break, but it came under unusual circumstances. On July 17, 2025, CBS and Paramount announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end after the 2025–26 broadcast season and that the broader Late Show franchise would be retired.
That made the September 2 broadcast the beginning of the show’s closing chapter. Paramount’s official program listing identified the date as the Season 11 premiere, while contemporaneous reporting described the preceding absence as a scheduled hiatus of roughly three weeks.

|---|---|
| July 17, 2025 | CBS announced that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would conclude after the 2025–26 broadcast season. |
| August 7–8, 2025 | The show entered its scheduled summer/end-of-season break. Reports identified August 7 as the last fresh episode before the hiatus. |
| September 2, 2025 | The program returned to CBS with its Season 11 premiere. |

Was this a normal summer return?
In scheduling terms, yes. The show took its customary late-summer break and resumed first-run episodes in September. In franchise terms, however, the return was different: viewers were coming back to a program that had already been announced as ending.
It is therefore most accurate to describe September 2 as the show’s return from its summer hiatus and the premiere of its final season. Calling it a revival, a renewal, or a permanent return would be misleading.

Why CBS said the show was ending
CBS and Paramount said the decision was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” The companies also said the cancellation was not related to the show’s performance, its content, or other matters at Paramount.
That is the companies’ stated explanation and should be attributed to them. Some commentators questioned whether the timing of the announcement, including its proximity to disputes involving Paramount and political criticism of Colbert, pointed to additional factors. Those suggestions remain interpretations or allegations, not a verified independent finding. The confirmed facts are that the companies announced the ending in July and that the show returned in September for its final season.

For viewers looking back at the final season
The September 2 date answers the hiatus question, but it should not be confused with the show’s later conclusion. The return was a historical broadcast event: the first episode of Season 11 and the resumption of new episodes after the summer break. The final episode was a separate event scheduled for May 21, 2026.
Fans interested in the host rather than the broadcast schedule may also find a Stephen Colbert book relevant as a physical keepsake or related reading. Availability and retailer listings should be checked separately; the documented merchandise source was Paramount Shop, and that does not by itself establish current availability through every retailer.
