NYT Connections answers for May 24, 2025
Yellow: BABY GEAR
BIB, BOTTLE, MONITOR, STROLLER
These are all familiar items used with babies or infants. A bib and bottle are everyday feeding-related items, while a monitor helps caregivers keep track of a baby and a stroller is used to transport one.
Green: KINDS OF PANTS MINUS “S”
CAPRI, JEAN, JOGGER, SLACK
Add an “S” to each word and the entries become familiar clothing terms: CAPRIS, JEANS, JOGGERS and SLACKS. The words on the board are the singular-looking forms created by removing the final letter from each plural term.
Blue: NEW YORK SPORTS TEAM MEMBERS
JET, MET, NET, RANGER
These are shortened versions of New York team names: the New York Jets, New York Mets, Brooklyn Nets and New York Rangers. As with the green group, the puzzle removes the final “S” from each team name.

Purple: BLACK WOMEN AUTHORS
BUTLER, GAY, HOOKS, WALKER
Each entry points to a prominent Black woman writer: Octavia E. Butler, Roxane Gay, bell hooks and Alice Walker. The category relies on surnames or author names rather than book titles or fictional characters.
Why this puzzle was tricky
The board includes several words that can suggest baby-related movement or equipment. JOGGER, STROLLER and WALKER look like a tempting near-group, especially because all three can evoke ways a baby or caregiver might move. But the yellow category is completed by BIB, BOTTLE and MONITOR, leaving JOGGER and WALKER for other groups.
Rank #3
The two letter-based categories create another layer of misdirection. Adding “S” produces both types of pants and New York team names, so recognizing the missing-letter pattern is not enough by itself. You also have to separate clothing terms from sports franchises.
The purple group is similarly dependent on recognizing names rather than ordinary dictionary meanings. BUTLER, GAY, HOOKS and WALKER are much easier to place if you know the authors associated with those names.
How NYT Connections works
Connections gives players 16 words and asks them to divide the board into four groups of four. Each group has a shared relationship, and the groups are color-coded by expected difficulty: yellow is generally the most accessible and purple is generally the most challenging.
A word can appear to fit more than one group, but the puzzle has one intended solution. That is why it is usually better to look for a complete set of four and test the relationship across every word before submitting. In this puzzle, resisting the apparent JOGGER–STROLLER–WALKER grouping is especially important.
