Yes—but only when the title supports Amazon’s Read & Listen feature and you have access to both the Kindle eBook and its matching Audible audiobook. The most reliable way to see the words highlighted as a professional narrator reads them is to open the audiobook in the Audible app and switch the player from Listen to Read & Listen.
Amazon previously called the connected experience Whispersync for Voice. You may also see the term Immersion Reading, especially when referring to synchronized text highlighting. Current customer-facing labels can vary by title, app, country, device, and software version.
The fastest method: use Read & Listen in Audible
- Confirm that you have both formats. The Kindle eBook and the matching Audible audiobook must be available in the same Amazon/Audible account or otherwise linked libraries.
- Open the audiobook in the Audible app. This is the clearest route to simultaneous narration and on-screen text.
- Check the title’s eligibility. Look for a Read & Listen badge or an equivalent indication that the Kindle edition and audiobook work together.
- Start playback.
- Change the player mode. Use the toggle above the cover image to switch from Listen to Read & Listen.
- Read along. The eBook text appears in the Audible app, with the words or passages highlighted in time with the professional audiobook narration.
You can normally adjust the font, text size, theme, narration speed, and chapter position from the app. The narration is a professionally recorded audiobook—not Kindle’s device-generated text-to-speech.
What you need before it will work
Read & Listen is title-dependent. Owning a Kindle and an Audible subscription does not automatically make every book compatible. Before buying or borrowing, check these points:

- The Kindle product page shows Read & Listen, an Add Audible Narration option, or another indication of a linked audiobook.
- You have the matching Audible audiobook, not merely an audiobook with a similar title.
- The Kindle edition and audiobook belong to the same work and edition family. Different editions, translations, or substantially different versions may not synchronize correctly.
- The audiobook is available in the country and account region you use.
- Your device and app support the relevant reading/listening feature.
If you already own the Kindle edition, Amazon may offer the companion audiobook through an Add Audible Narration offer or another linked purchase path. Availability and pricing vary by title and date, so check the individual book page rather than relying on a general discount claim. If an eligible Kindle eBook bought through a linked offer is later returned, the linked audiobook may also be removed and refunded under Audible’s applicable terms.
How to check whether a Kindle book supports it
From the Kindle or Amazon book page
Open the title’s product details and look for Read & Listen, Audible narration, or Add Audible Narration. Kindle Unlimited users may also see a headset or with Narration icon on eligible titles. Kindle Unlimited availability can change, so verify the listing when you borrow the book.
From Audible
Eligible titles show a Read & Listen badge in the Audible app. If the app provides a Read & Listen filter in your library, use it to find titles that support the connected experience.
The safest purchasing decision is therefore title-specific: confirm the badge or narration option for the exact Kindle edition, then confirm that the audiobook is the matching version.

The Kindle app can open the eBook and hand listening off to Audible when the matching audiobook is available:
- Open the Kindle book in the Kindle app.
- Tap the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Listen on Audible.
- Confirm that Audible should open.
When both formats are owned, current support may allow you to read and listen, read only, or listen to the audiobook. For the clearest live text-following experience, however, start in the Audible app and select Read & Listen. Labels and menus are not identical on every Kindle-branded product.

Which Kindle devices support reading and listening together?
“Kindle” can mean an e-reader, the Kindle app, or a Fire tablet. They do not all offer the same interface or feature set.
| Device or app | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Kindle app for Android, iPhone/iPad, or PC | Can support the connected Kindle-and-Audible workflow when the title is eligible and both formats are available. The Audible mobile app is the most straightforward option for synchronized text highlighting. |
| Fire tablet | Audible lists Fire tablets running Fire OS 8 or later among devices that can support the relevant reading/listening experience. Check the tablet’s software version and the title’s eligibility. |
| Recent Kindle e-reader | Audible lists Kindle e-readers released from 2022 onward as supporting switching between reading and listening. Check the exact model and current software before buying one specifically for this feature. |
| Older Kindle e-reader | May support reading, VoiceView, or audiobook playback through compatible Bluetooth audio, but should not automatically be assumed to provide Immersion Reading with synchronized visual highlighting. |
| Audible app for macOS | Audible lists its macOS app among the platforms supporting Immersion Reading for eligible titles. |
A Kindle Paperwhite or another supported Kindle e-reader can be a good dedicated reading screen, but do not choose a model solely on the product name. Verify the specific model, software version, title eligibility, and whether the feature you want is switching between formats or true synchronized highlighting.

These related features are easy to confuse:
- Switching between reading and listening: You read in Kindle and listen in Audible, with the reading/listening position synchronized across supported apps and devices.
- Immersion Reading: The eBook text is displayed in the Audible app while the audiobook plays, and the text is highlighted in sync with the narration.
A title may support the first workflow without presenting the exact same interface as the second on every device. If your goal is to see highlighted words while listening, use an eligible title in the Audible app and select Read & Listen.
Do you need headphones?
No. Headphones are not required for Read & Listen in the Audible app, although they may make the setup more comfortable and private. On supported Kindle e-readers, Amazon documents Bluetooth pairing for VoiceView commands or audiobook playback. A compatible pair of Bluetooth headphones for audiobooks can therefore be useful for private listening.
Bluetooth audio does not turn an incompatible Kindle e-reader into an Immersion Reading device. Pairing headphones proves only that the Kindle can send audio to the accessory; it does not prove that the e-reader can display synchronized highlighted text.
Internet and offline limitations
Audible says the eBook text for Read & Listen is streamed in the Audible app, so an active internet connection is generally required. Some pages may be cached, but you should not assume that the entire synchronized reading experience will be available offline.
For the smoothest session, open the title while connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, allow the text and audio to load, and avoid treating cached pages as a guaranteed offline download.
How synchronization works
On eligible titles, Read & Listen normally remembers the last reading or listening position. You can listen in Audible, read in Kindle, and resume from the latest synchronized position on another supported surface.
Rank #3
- Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
There are two different synchronization controls worth knowing about:
- Audible device-position sync: In the Audible app, open Profile > Settings > Player and find Sync device position.
- Kindle e-reader sync: Connect the Kindle to the internet and run Sync or Sync and Check for Items. This can synchronize pending books, notes, highlights, software updates, and the furthest page read across Kindle surfaces.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Verify the title
Return to the book page and look for the Read & Listen badge or Audible narration option. If there is no indication that the two formats are linked, the title may not support synchronized reading and listening.
2. Verify both formats and the account
Confirm that the Kindle eBook and audiobook are both in the same customer’s libraries or linked account. Owning only the Kindle edition is not enough for the full experience.
3. Check that the editions match
Different narrations, translations, publishers, or editions can cause a position mismatch or prevent the connected feature from appearing. Select the exact audiobook associated with the Kindle product page.
4. Turn position syncing off and on
With the device connected to a network, open Profile > Settings > Player in Audible. Turn Sync device position off, then turn it back on. Reopen the title and try again.

5. Connect to the internet
Reconnect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, especially if the text is blank, the Read & Listen control is missing, or the latest position does not appear.
6. Update the app or device
Install available Kindle and Audible app updates and check the Kindle or Fire tablet’s software. Older software may lack current menu labels or support.
7. Retry from Audible
Open the eligible audiobook directly in Audible, start playback, and use the toggle above the cover image to select Read & Listen. This avoids confusing audiobook playback with Kindle’s separate reading or accessibility controls.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this feature is not
It is not text-to-speech
The synchronized narration comes from the companion professional audiobook. Kindle’s VoiceView or another screen-reading function is a different accessibility and playback feature.
It is not supported on every Kindle e-reader
Bluetooth audiobook playback, VoiceView, and Immersion Reading are separate capabilities. An older e-reader may play audio through a paired device without showing synchronized highlighted text.
It is not embedded audio in a Kindle eBook
Read & Listen uses a linked Audible audiobook. It is not the same as audio or video embedded inside a Kindle edition. Amazon’s publishing guidance says embedded audio and video are not supported on Kindle e-readers, and supported embedded media may instead be available on Fire tablets or certain Apple devices. Amazon also does not currently accept embedded audio that functions as a complete read-along of the book.

A practical setup for different readers
- Want the easiest highlighted-text experience? Use the Audible app on a supported phone, tablet, Mac, or Fire tablet, and select Read & Listen.
- Prefer a distraction-free e-reader? Use a supported recent Kindle e-reader for reading and verify whether your exact model offers the switching behavior you want. Do not assume it has the same live highlighting interface as Audible on a phone or tablet.
- Already own only the Kindle book? Check the title page for Add Audible Narration or Read & Listen before purchasing the companion audiobook.
- Need private listening? Pair Bluetooth headphones with a supported device, while remembering that headphones do not add Immersion Reading support.
- Need offline access? Download or prepare the audiobook where the app permits it, but do not assume the streamed eBook text and synchronized highlighting will work fully without an internet connection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I read a Kindle book and listen to Audible at the same time?
Yes, if the title supports Read & Listen and you have both the Kindle eBook and matching Audible audiobook. Open the audiobook in Audible and switch from Listen to Read & Listen.
Do I need both Kindle Unlimited and Audible?
You need access to the eligible Kindle eBook and its matching audiobook, but the precise purchase or subscription arrangement varies by title and region. Kindle Unlimited users should look for the narration or headset indicator on the individual book page.
Why do I hear the audiobook but not see highlighted text?
You may be using Listen mode, the title may not support Immersion Reading, the formats may not match, or the device/app may not support synchronized highlighting. Verify the title badge, then retry in the Audible app using Read & Listen.
Does every Kindle Paperwhite support Immersion Reading?
Do not assume that every Kindle e-reader, including every Paperwhite model, offers the same interface. Audible’s current guidance lists Kindle e-readers released from 2022 onward for switching between reading and listening, but you should verify the exact model, software, and title.
Can I use Read & Listen without internet?
Usually not reliably. Audible says the eBook text is streamed in the Audible app, although some pages may be cached. An internet connection is recommended.
Are Read & Listen and Whispersync for Voice the same thing?
They refer to Amazon’s connected Kindle-and-Audible experience. Whispersync for Voice is the former name; Read & Listen is the current customer-facing terminology, while Immersion Reading commonly describes synchronized text highlighting.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Check the exact book for a Read & Listen badge or Add Audible Narration option, make sure you have both matching formats, and use the Audible app’s Listen > Read & Listen toggle for synchronized narration and highlighted text. Device support varies, and Bluetooth audiobook playback on a Kindle is not the same as Immersion Reading.
