That was the film’s transactional digital release for purchase or rental—not its later Disney+ debut. Disney released the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions on March 12, 2024, followed by the Disney+ streaming premiere on April 3, 2024.
Wish home-release timeline
| Release | U.S. date | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Theatrical release | November 22, 2023 | The film opened in U.S. cinemas. |
| Digital purchase and rental | January 23, 2024 | Wish became available through digital retailers. |
| 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD | March 12, 2024 | Physical home-media editions went on sale. |
| Disney+ streaming | April 3, 2024 | The film became available to Disney+ subscribers in the announced market. |
The key distinction is between digital release and subscription streaming. If a reader was asking when they could buy or rent Wish online, the answer was January 23, 2024. April 3 was the separate Disney+ streaming date.
Why the digital release drew attention
Disney moved Wish to digital retailers after a theatrical run that was widely viewed as disappointing for a major Walt Disney Animation Studios release. The film opened in the United States on November 22, 2023, taking approximately $19.5 million during its three-day domestic opening weekend and about $31.7 million over the five-day Thanksgiving frame. Those figures were below expectations for a new Disney animated tentpole.
Box Office Mojo records an eventual domestic gross of approximately $63.97 million and a worldwide gross of approximately $254.88 million. The Numbers lists a reported production budget of roughly $200 million. That combination helps explain the commercial disappointment: the worldwide theatrical gross was only modestly above the reported production budget, before accounting for theater splits, marketing, distribution costs, and other expenses.

- Walt Disney Animation Studios' newest animated musical fantasy, Disney Wish, is now available on Blu-ray!
Those figures should not be described as proof that Disney lost a specific amount of money. A movie studio does not receive the full worldwide box-office gross, and the available public figures do not establish Disney’s final net profit or loss. “Disappointing” is best understood here as a comparison with the film’s scale, expectations, and the studio’s earlier theatrical performance—not as a definitive verdict on the movie’s quality.
What is Wish about?
Wish is an original animated musical fantasy-comedy from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It follows Asha, a young woman living in the kingdom of Rosas, whose appeal to the stars brings forth Star, a cosmic force capable of answering wishes. Asha’s conflict with King Magnifico drives the story as the kingdom’s ideas about wishes, power, and control begin to change.
Ariana DeBose voices Asha, Chris Pine voices King Magnifico, and Alan Tudyk voices Valentino. Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn directed the film. Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice wrote the original songs, while Dave Metzger composed the score.
The movie’s reception was mixed rather than uniformly negative. Rotten Tomatoes reports critic and audience information separately, so its commercial underperformance should not be presented as evidence that every viewer or reviewer rejected the film.

Which home format should you choose?
Digital purchase or rental
Digital retailers were the first home-viewing option after the theatrical window. A digital rental generally provides temporary access, while a digital purchase is intended to remain in the buyer’s account under the retailer’s licensing terms. Availability, pricing, playback features, and purchase rights can vary by retailer and location, so readers should check the current listing in the U.S. before buying.
Disney+
Wish began streaming on Disney+ on April 3, 2024. This is a subscription option, not the same transaction as purchasing or renting the film. Disney+ catalog availability and subscription terms can change, and availability may differ outside the United States.

- Disney's Cinderella DVD + Blu-Ray
4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD
Disney released the physical editions on March 12, 2024. Disney’s Wish Blu-ray is the straightforward choice for viewers with a standard Blu-ray player, while the Wish 4K Ultra HD edition is intended for compatible 4K hardware and displays. The Wish DVD is the practical alternative for households that do not use Blu-ray or 4K equipment. Check the package and retailer listing for the included discs and bonus features before ordering.
Soundtrack and collector editions
For listeners more interested in the film’s music than its home-video format, an official Wish soundtrack CD collects music from the film, including material connected with the songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice. Disney Music Emporium has also documented a soundtrack LP and a limited This Wish picture disc. Those vinyl products are collector-oriented options; availability and price may be more limited than for the standard soundtrack or movie editions.

Did Wish lose money in theaters?

When did the Wish Blu-ray and DVD come out?
The 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions were released in the United States on March 12, 2024.
Was Wish universally disliked?
No. Reception was mixed. Commercial performance and reviews are separate questions, and critic and audience responses should not be reduced to a claim that everyone rejected the film.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The correct U.S. digital release date for Wish was January 23, 2024. Disney+ followed on April 3, while the 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions arrived on March 12.
