Cynthia Erivo objected to a fan-edited version of the Wicked movie poster because it covered her eyes and altered her expression to more closely resemble the iconic Broadway artwork. The edit was not an official Universal revision, and it was not the same image as a separate AI-generated video or the sexualized memes that later became part of the online discussion. The dispute brought together adaptation nostalgia, fan remix culture, celebrity image control, and questions about how a performer’s face is represented.

What happened with the Wicked poster?

Universal released the official Wicked film poster on October 9, 2024, as ticket sales began. The photographic design showed Ariana Grande as Glinda leaning toward Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. Grande’s face and hand dominate the foreground, while Erivo looks directly at the viewer.

The composition deliberately recalled the best-known poster for the Broadway musical. However, the film campaign used a close-up photograph rather than reproducing the stage illustration literally. That difference became important once fans began comparing the two images. Variety’s account of the poster dispute documents the original release and the visual similarities that prompted the fan response.

What did the fan edit change?

A widely circulated fan edit altered the official photograph so it looked more like the Broadway poster. In the edited version:

  • Elphaba’s hat was lowered to obscure Erivo’s eyes;
  • Glinda’s hand was raised closer to her mouth;
  • Erivo’s lips were changed to the red, slightly smiling appearance associated with the stage artwork; and
  • the overall pose was made more faithful to the familiar illustration.

The image was a conventional fan manipulation, not an official studio correction and not an AI-generated poster. Fans who shared it generally treated the changes as an attempt to restore recognizable details from the Broadway design. Many commenters said they preferred the edited composition, which helped the image spread.

Why did Cynthia Erivo call the edit offensive?

On October 16, Erivo shared the edited image in an Instagram Story and described it as offensive and deeply hurtful. Her objection focused especially on the concealment of her eyes.

Erivo explained that the official film poster was an illustration-like homage to the stage artwork, not an attempt to copy it exactly. In the photograph, she had intentionally looked into the camera. For her, that gaze was part of the performance and a way of communicating with the audience. Covering her eyes therefore changed more than the composition: she felt it erased an important part of her presence in the image.

This is the central point of the controversy. Fans were evaluating the poster as a reference to an iconic piece of theatrical design. Erivo was also experiencing it as a portrait of a living performer whose expression and likeness had been deliberately chosen for the film campaign. Those interpretations can coexist, but they lead to very different reactions to the same edit. Forbes’ explanation of the episode records Erivo’s stated reasoning and the broader online reaction.

Was the fan edit meant to erase Erivo?

That conclusion goes beyond what the available reporting establishes. The person associated with the edit described it as an innocent homage and said there was no malicious intent. After temporarily removing the image, the person later reposted it with a statement acknowledging that Erivo had the right to feel hurt.

At the same time, Erivo’s description of the effect as erasure should not be dismissed simply because the editor intended a tribute. Intent and impact are different questions. The editor was trying to make the photograph resemble the stage poster; Erivo experienced the removal of her eyes as the removal of a meaningful part of her representation.

Some online commentary connected the incident to the broader history of how Black women are represented in popular culture. That context helps explain why the alteration carried particular weight for some viewers. But the reporting does not prove that the individual who made the edit consciously intended a racist message. It is more accurate to say that the controversy acquired a racialized dimension while the editor publicly characterized the work as homage.

How did Jon M. Chu and Ariana Grande respond?

Wicked director Jon M. Chu publicly supported Erivo, referring to her as his “superhero” in a social-media response to her statement.

Ariana Grande later discussed the dispute in an interview. Her response was more qualified than a blanket condemnation of fan edits. She recognized that fans routinely remix promotional images while also expressing respect for Erivo and affection for her co-star. In other words, Grande acknowledged the normal creativity of fandom without treating that creativity as more important than Erivo’s reaction to the specific alteration.

ABC News reported that Grande also shared the official Wicked poster to her Instagram Story after Erivo’s posts. That action was widely interpreted as solidarity, but it should be described as an interpretation rather than proof of Grande’s private intentions or of a personal dispute between the performers.

How were AI videos and sexualized memes connected?

Erivo’s reaction also referred to an AI-generated video depicting the two stars as if they were fighting. Online coverage discussed that video alongside sexualized jokes and memes about Elphaba’s green skin. These items became linked in public conversation because Erivo addressed them in the same response.

They were not, however, one identical artifact:

Item What it was Why the distinction matters
Fan poster edit A conventional image manipulation intended to make the film poster resemble the Broadway artwork. Its key dispute concerned the alteration of Erivo’s face, gaze, and likeness.
AI fight video A separate generative-AI manipulation showing the performers appearing to fight. It should not be inaccurately described as the source of the poster edit.
Sexualized memes Explicit online jokes that changed the tone of the conversation from theatrical homage to internet humor. They were separate examples of remixing and should not automatically be attributed to the poster editor.

Erivo’s comments should therefore not be turned into a claim that she opposed all fan art, all memes, or all artificial intelligence. Her remarks addressed particular manipulations and their effects. The separate forms of online content became part of one controversy, but they had different creators, formats, and purposes. Forbes’ reporting provides context for the AI and meme-related discussion.

Why did fans want the movie poster to match the Broadway image?

The original stage poster is one of Wicked’s most recognizable visual references. Its lowered hat, concealed eyes, covered mouth, and red lips are not incidental details for longtime fans; they are part of the musical’s visual identity.

When Universal released a photographic version that echoed the stage composition without duplicating every detail, some fans saw an opportunity to “correct” it. Their standard was fidelity to the established artwork. From that perspective, the fan edit made the movie campaign feel more recognizably Wicked.

Erivo’s standard was different. The film poster was not merely a logo or a fictional illustration. It was also an image of her. The direct gaze communicated something that the Broadway artwork’s hidden eyes could not. The dispute was consequently not just about whether one design looked better. It was about whether adaptation fidelity should take priority over the meaning of a performer’s chosen photographic representation.

What the controversy does—and does not—show

The episode illustrates a growing tension in participatory fandom. Fans are accustomed to cropping, color-correcting, redesigning, and remixing studio imagery. Those practices can be affectionate and creatively valuable. But a promotional image also contains a real person’s likeness, and the person depicted may experience a modification differently from the audience making it.

It is also important not to overstate the incident:

  • Universal did not secretly replace the official poster with the fan edit.
  • Erivo did not object simply because fans preferred the Broadway artwork.
  • The poster edit was not the AI-generated fight video.
  • The available reporting does not establish that the editor intended to make a racist statement.
  • Grande did not clearly condemn every fan edit or describe a private conflict with Erivo.

The clearest chronology is straightforward: the official poster appeared on October 9, 2024; fan edits circulated afterward; Erivo responded on October 16; Chu supported her; Grande later addressed the issue; and the discussion expanded to separate AI-generated and sexualized online material.

The larger question: who controls a promotional image?

The Wicked poster dispute has no need for a simple villain-and-victim reading to be meaningful. The editor could intend a tribute, fans could genuinely prefer the stage-inspired version, and Erivo could still feel that the edit erased a deliberate part of her performance.

That tension explains why the image generated such a strong reaction. For fans, the poster was a piece of franchise iconography that could be quoted and improved. For Erivo, it was also her face, her gaze, and her contribution to the film’s public identity. The controversy sits at the boundary between audience participation and personal representation—and that boundary is increasingly difficult to define when social platforms make professional promotional images easy to alter and distribute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the controversial Wicked poster edit official?

No. It was a fan-made image that changed Universal’s official film poster to resemble the Broadway artwork more closely. Universal did not release it as a replacement.

What specifically upset Cynthia Erivo?

Erivo said the edit covered or removed her eyes. She had intentionally looked into the camera in the official photograph and viewed that gaze as an important part of her performance and connection with the audience.

Was the poster edit made with AI?

The poster edit was described as a conventional image manipulation. A separate AI-generated video showing Erivo and Ariana Grande appearing to fight was discussed in the same online controversy, but it was not the poster edit.

Did Ariana Grande condemn the fan edit?

Grande’s reported comments were nuanced. She acknowledged that fans make edits while expressing respect for Erivo and love for her co-star. Her later sharing of the official poster was interpreted as support, but her private intent should not be assumed.

The Bottom Line

The Wicked poster controversy was a clash between two ideas of homage: fans wanted the film image to reproduce the Broadway poster’s familiar visual language, while Cynthia Erivo saw the official photograph as a deliberate portrait whose direct gaze should not be removed. The edit’s intent may have been affectionate, but Erivo’s objection concerned its impact on her representation. Separate AI and sexualized meme content intensified the conversation without being the same artifact.
