In the United States, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is currently available to stream through Max, including the HBO Max Amazon Channel, and to rent or buy digitally through Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home. It is no longer in a normal nationwide theatrical run. JustWatch’s latest U.S. check found no free streaming option, although availability, prices, and listings can change.
Where to watch The War of the Rohirrim right now
| Option | Current U.S. status | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Max | Available by subscription | The film is listed on Max in the U.S. Catalogs can change, so check the title inside the service before subscribing. |
| HBO Max Amazon Channel | Available through the channel listing | This is a channel subscription option and should not be confused with a film rental or with every Amazon Prime membership automatically including the movie. |
| Amazon Video | Available to rent or buy | The latest listing showed a $3.99 rental price, but prices and eligibility can vary by account and can change without notice. |
| Apple TV Store | Available to rent or buy | Check the individual listing for the current rental and purchase prices, resolution, audio, and subtitle details. |
| Fandango At Home | Available to rent or buy | Availability and purchase terms are controlled by the storefront and may vary by location. |
| Free streaming | Not listed in the latest U.S. check | No free streaming option was reported at the time of the latest availability check. |
| Movie theaters | No regular U.S. theatrical run | The original theatrical release was in December 2024. A special, festival, or repertory screening could still appear locally. |
If you want the simplest subscription option, start with Max. If you do not already subscribe, a one-time digital rental may be cheaper for a single viewing. You can also rent The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim on Amazon Video; the storefront may also offer a digital purchase. Always confirm the current price before completing the transaction.
Is The War of the Rohirrim still in theaters?
Not as part of a normal nationwide U.S. theatrical run. Warner Bros. announced the film’s U.S. theatrical release for December 13, 2024, following international theatrical releases that began earlier that month. Current showtime checking for a U.S. location found no available screenings for the selected date and location.
That does not rule out every possible screening. Cinemas sometimes bring back films for repertory programs, fan events, festivals, or one-night engagements. To look for one, search the movie title with your ZIP code on a live theater or ticketing service, and try more than one date. Theater listings are inherently location- and date-specific.

When did it move to streaming?
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that the movie would make its global streaming debut on Max on February 28, 2025. The announcement described that debut as exclusive to Max at the time. That does not mean Max will remain the film’s permanent exclusive home: current U.S. listings also show separate rental and purchase options on digital storefronts.

Subscription streaming and digital ownership are different arrangements. A title appearing on Amazon Video does not mean it is included with an ordinary Amazon Prime membership. It may instead be offered as a paid rental or purchase, while the HBO Max Amazon Channel is a separate channel subscription.
How to choose the best way to watch
Choose Max if you already subscribe
Max is the most direct choice for existing subscribers because the film is listed in its U.S. catalog. Search for the complete title, including “The War of the Rohirrim,” rather than assuming that every Lord of the Rings film is available in the same catalog. Streaming catalogs can differ by country and change over time.
Rent digitally for one movie night
A rental is usually the practical option when you want to watch the film once without adding a recurring subscription. The current U.S. aggregation listing identified Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango At Home as rental destinations. The latest observed Amazon Video rental price was $3.99, but treat that figure as a snapshot rather than a guaranteed current price.

Before paying, check the rental window, whether playback must begin within a specified period, and how long the title remains available after you press play. Those rules, along with supported devices, language tracks, subtitles, and resolution, are set by the individual storefront.
Buy digitally if you expect to rewatch it
A digital purchase can make sense for repeat viewings, but “buying” a movie does not necessarily mean receiving a transferable file. Access is normally tied to the retailer account and platform terms used for the transaction. Confirm device compatibility and the store’s current playback rules before purchasing, especially if you use more than one ecosystem.
Want to own it on disc?
A Blu-ray release is documented for the film, making The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim Blu-ray an option for viewers who want a permanent physical copy rather than a changing streaming listing. Stock, sellers, packaging, and edition contents can vary, so inspect the individual product page before ordering.
Some authorized DVD, Blu-ray, and UHD releases include a digital-code insert, but that documentation does not establish that every edition of this particular film includes an active code. Do not buy a specific disc edition solely on the assumption that a digital copy is included.

What is the movie about?
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is a 2024 animated fantasy feature set approximately 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy. It follows the fate of the House of Helm Hammerhand, the legendary King of Rohan.
Warner Bros. presented it as a New Line Cinema original anime feature directed by Kenji Kamiyama and theatrically distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. Its earlier place in Middle-earth history means viewers do not need to treat it as a direct continuation of the trilogy, although familiarity with Rohan and its legends can add context.
Availability caveats before you pay
- Check your country. The options above describe the United States. Rights and storefront catalogs differ internationally.
- Recheck the listing. Subscription catalogs, rental prices, purchase prices, and theater showtimes are volatile.
- Separate subscription from transaction. Max access, an HBO Max Amazon Channel subscription, an Amazon Video rental, and an Amazon Video purchase are not interchangeable products.
- Read the edition details. Do not assume a specific resolution, audio format, subtitle selection, digital portability, or bonus material unless the current store or disc listing confirms it.
- Use current showtimes. A single theater search only reflects its selected location and date; it cannot prove that no special screening exists anywhere.
Related listening
For viewers interested in the film’s music, the original motion-picture soundtrack is listed on Amazon Music. It contains 30 tracks, runs approximately two hours and nine minutes, and features music by Stephen Gallagher. The soundtrack is a separate purchase or listening decision, not another way to watch the movie.
