Their looks did more than satisfy the dress code: they used tailoring to communicate personality, history, performance, and identity.
The gala took place on May 5, 2025, at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, celebrating the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. Its dress code, “Tailored for You,” invited guests to interpret suiting and menswear through the history of Black style and dandyism. That context matters. The most successful outfits were not simply expensive suits or formal gowns; they made tailoring feel personal.
What made a look successful at the 2025 Met Gala?
The 2025 theme gave guests a more specific challenge than a general fashion prompt. Superfine: Tailoring Black Style explored more than three centuries of Black fashion and dandyism, including the ways clothing can express identity, status, power, confidence, and self-invention across the Black Atlantic diaspora. The exhibition was scheduled to run from May 10 through October 26, 2025.
The gala’s dress code, “Tailored for You,” was therefore open to interpretation but not meaningless. A strong look needed to show some relationship to tailoring, suiting, or menswear while also conveying something individual. That is why a conventional black tuxedo could feel less successful than a highly theatrical or historically suggestive garment—and why Diana Ross deserved recognition even though her look was not a literal suit.

The following list is an editorial shortlist informed by the strongest fashion coverage and audience response. “Best dressed” is a judgment, not an official award, so the order should be read as a critical ranking rather than a definitive result.
#1 Best Overall
1. Zendaya in Louis Vuitton by Pharrell Williams
Zendaya’s white Louis Vuitton three-piece suit, designed by Pharrell Williams, was one of the clearest and most disciplined interpretations of “Tailored for You.” The look featured sharply cut suiting, a white palette, a broad floppy hat, and Bvlgari jewelry. Its bridal associations added another layer without turning the outfit into a conventional wedding-inspired gown.
The restraint was the point. The outfit had an immediate silhouette and a strong visual identity, yet it did not need excessive decoration to command attention. Its proportions, pristine color, and hat made it recognizable from a distance; its construction rewarded closer attention. Vogue praised the simplicity and sophistication, while Glamour included the custom Louis Vuitton ensemble among the evening’s defining women’s looks.
Why it ranks first: Zendaya’s look showed how powerful tailoring can be when the fit, palette, and styling are all tightly controlled. It interpreted the dress code directly without looking predictable.

2. Rihanna in custom Marc Jacobs
Rihanna’s custom Marc Jacobs outfit combined a cropped jacket, lapel detailing, a skirt, and tie-like elements. The result occupied an interesting space between formalwear, suiting, and a deliberately fragmented interpretation of menswear codes.
The look also became one of the night’s most significant red-carpet moments because Rihanna revealed her third pregnancy. That documented event detail intensified the public attention around the outfit, although the garment’s fashion success should be evaluated separately: its cropped proportions, tailored components, and highly personal styling already made it a strong reading of the theme.
Vogue placed Rihanna at the front of its tailoring coverage, and Vanity Fair described the look as successfully capturing the brief. The outfit felt unmistakably like Rihanna rather than a generic attempt to reproduce a menswear look.
Why it ranks so highly: it was tailored, personal, photographically memorable, and confident enough to let a major life announcement become part of—not a substitute for—the fashion story.

- Used Book in Good Condition
3. Lewis Hamilton in Wales Bonner
Lewis Hamilton’s Wales Bonner ensemble was among the evening’s most acclaimed menswear looks. British Vogue’s reader poll placed him third overall and named him the best-dressed man according to its readers.
The look’s significance extended beyond its precision. Stylist Eric McNeal connected its inspiration to Harlem Renaissance style and Cab Calloway’s use of clothing as an expression of confidence and charm. That historical association gave Hamilton’s tailoring a particularly strong relationship to the exhibition’s subject.
Hamilton’s outfit did not treat menswear as a neutral uniform. It used elegance and detail to suggest a lineage of Black self-presentation, performance, and authority. The result was polished without becoming anonymous.
Why it belongs: Hamilton linked visual precision to the intellectual framework of Superfine. It was both an accomplished fashion look and one of the night’s clearest examples of tailoring carrying historical meaning.

4. Colman Domingo in custom Valentino
Co-chair Colman Domingo appeared in custom Valentino in a richly colored, theatrical silhouette. His outfit demonstrated that tailoring does not have to mean restrained navy, black, or gray suiting. Formalwear can be ceremonial, expressive, and grand while still relying on structure and controlled proportion.
That interpretation was especially appropriate for a co-chair. Domingo was not merely attending the event; he was helping establish its visual language. His custom Valentino look made the theme feel expansive, showing how suiting traditions can be transformed through color, volume, and performance.
Vogue included Domingo among its best-dressed co-chairs, while Vanity Fair credited the Valentino ensemble and Boucheron jewelry.
Rank #3
Why it ranks among the best: Domingo made tailoring feel celebratory rather than restrictive. His look had the scale of a gala costume but retained a clear relationship to formal dressing.

Janelle Monáe’s Thom Browne look was one of the most conceptually distinctive outfits of the night. Vanity Fair placed Monáe first in its gallery and credited Thom Browne, Selim Mouzannar, and Vacheron Constantin; Vogue also identified the look as a standout in its tailoring coverage.
The ensemble pushed suiting toward a theatrical, clockwork-inspired world. Its visual construction made the outfit feel engineered rather than merely assembled, while the recognizable relationship to tailoring kept the concept connected to the dress code.
Monáe’s look is an important counterpoint to Zendaya’s restraint. Both were successful, but for opposite reasons: Zendaya used editing and simplicity, while Monáe used invention, symbolism, and elaborate construction.
Why it belongs: it treated tailoring as a form of design and performance. The outfit was imaginative without abandoning the structural language the gala requested.

Diana Ross’s return to the Met Gala after 2003 was a major event in its own right. She wore a custom Eleven Sixteen gown with an approximately 18-foot train embroidered with the names of her children and grandchildren.
Ross’s look was less literal than a suit, but it would be a mistake to measure every successful appearance by the same standard. The garment’s scale, custom construction, and family symbolism made it one of the evening’s most emotionally resonant statements. The train transformed the red carpet into a space for personal history, turning the idea of legacy into something visible and physical.
Rank #4
Glamour and Vanity Fair both highlighted the garment’s length and personal meaning. It may not be the strongest example of tailoring in the narrowest sense, but it was arguably the night’s most unforgettable fashion image.
Other strong contenders
The main shortlist does not exhaust the evening’s successful interpretations. Several other guests offered distinctive approaches to the dress code:
- A$AP Rocky in AWGE: Vogue included the co-chair among its best-dressed guests. His look offered a contemporary interpretation of tailoring with a distinctly modern attitude.
- Pharrell Williams in Louis Vuitton: Also included in Vogue’s co-chair selection, Williams brought a polished, contemporary finish to the menswear brief.
- Teyana Taylor in Ruth E. Carter: Vogue specifically praised Taylor’s ensemble as a strong interpretation of the tailoring brief, with costume designer Ruth E. Carter involved.
- J Balvin in Marc Jacobs: His pink suit with double peak lapels reworked conventional suiting through color and exaggerated detailing. Vogue highlighted it as an inventive interpretation.
- Doechii in Louis Vuitton: Glamour identified Doechii among the evening’s standout looks and credited Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.
- Coco Jones in Manish Malhotra: Both Vogue and Glamour highlighted Jones’s custom Manish Malhotra look.
- Jennie Kim in Chanel: British Vogue readers placed Jennie second in their poll, making her one of the strongest audience-backed choices.
- Bad Bunny in Prada and With Clarity: Vanity Fair included him in its best-dressed gallery. The look was a strong example of personality-forward, gender-expansive tailoring.
- Lupita Nyong’o in Chanel: Vogue included Nyong’o in its best-dressed gallery, recognizing a polished interpretation of the evening’s formalwear language.
- Demi Moore in Thom Browne: Glamour identified Moore’s custom Thom Browne look as a standout.
- Priyanka Chopra in Balmain: Vanity Fair highlighted Olivier Rousteing’s Balmain look, which reimagined a vintage Pierre Balmain ensemble from the 1952–53 collections.
What the fashion coverage agreed on—and where it differed
The coverage did not produce one universal ranking, and that disagreement is useful rather than inconvenient. Vogue’s selection emphasized interpretation of the theme and included all four celebrity co-chairs. Glamour and Vanity Fair widened the field, giving substantial attention to guests such as Janelle Monáe, Diana Ross, Demi Moore, Coco Jones, Doechii, Colman Domingo, and Rihanna.
British Vogue’s reader poll produced a somewhat different hierarchy: Zendaya led, followed by Jennie Kim, Lewis Hamilton, Sabrina Carpenter, and Rihanna. That result reflects audience enthusiasm rather than the same editorial criteria used by a fashion desk. It is evidence of consensus around some names—especially Zendaya, Hamilton, and Rihanna—but not proof that every publication or viewer ranked the looks identically.
The fairest conclusion is therefore to describe the names above as the night’s strongest consensus picks and most compelling interpretations, not to claim that one celebrity won an objective award.

The gala was designed to promote and interpret Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, not simply to produce a collection of celebrity images. Readers who want visual and historical context can look for Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, the official 2025 exhibition catalog from The Metropolitan Museum of Art. The larger fashion takeaway
The best looks at the 2025 Met Gala treated tailoring as a language rather than a dress code checklist. Zendaya used restraint; Rihanna used personal narrative and hybrid suiting; Hamilton connected modern precision to historical Black style; Domingo made formalwear ceremonial; Monáe turned construction into theater; and Ross used a custom train to express family and legacy.

That range explains why the event resisted a single winner. The strongest guests understood that “Tailored for You” did not ask everyone to wear the same kind of suit. It asked them to make clothing say something specific about who they were, what traditions they were drawing from, and how they wanted to be seen.
