Spoiler note: This is a mostly non-spoiler cast and character guide. It covers the Season 2 premise, player identities, relationships, and motivations, but does not explain the ending or list major deaths.

Squid Game Season 2 brings back a small group of important figures from Season 1—Seong Gi-hun, the Front Man, Hwang Jun-ho, and the Recruiter—while rebuilding the competition around a largely new group of players. Gi-hun is no longer entering the games simply to survive: three years after winning the ₩45.6 billion prize, he returns with a plan to find and destroy the organization behind them.

All seven episodes of Season 2 premiered on Netflix on December 26, 2024, and are streaming now. The guide below separates the returning characters from the new contenders and uses the player numbers that appear throughout the season.

At a glance: the Season 2 cast and player numbers

The arena’s central ensemble is almost entirely new. The most important returning figures are not all contestants: Gi-hun re-enters as Player 456, while the Front Man and the Recruiter continue operating on the other side of the games. Jun-ho remains outside the competition, investigating the organization.

Netflix’s official Season 2 cast and character guide provides the player numbers and the core motivations summarized here. Player 095’s role is also clarified in Netflix’s Season 2 games explainer.

The returning characters

Seong Gi-hun / Player 456 — Lee Jung-jae

Gi-hun is the returning winner of the first season and the person who pulls the story back into the games. After taking the prize, he was supposed to leave for the United States, but he abandons that plan. Instead, he spends the following three years searching for the Recruiter and trying to locate the organization.

His goal in Season 2 is not merely to win again. Gi-hun wants to stop the competition. That mission changes his position within the story: he knows the rules, recognizes the methods used to manipulate the players, and has personal experience of what the games do to people. At the same time, returning to the arena means placing himself back inside the system he wants to destroy.

Netflix describes this version of Gi-hun as more hardened and mission-driven than the desperate gambler seen at the beginning of Season 1. His number, 456, remains one of the most useful ways to identify him in the crowded new cast.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Front Man — Lee Byung-hun

The Front Man remains the masked administrator responsible for protecting and managing the competition. Season 2 gives the character a larger presence and develops more of his history. Netflix identifies him as a former winner, a detail that helps explain why his relationship with the games is more complicated than that of a distant employee.

Rather than remaining only a voice behind surveillance screens, the Front Man becomes more directly involved in the conflict with Gi-hun. His defining question is how far he will go to preserve the games and the worldview that supports them.

Hwang Jun-ho — Wi Ha-jun

Jun-ho returns as the detective who uncovered evidence of the games in Season 1 and survived the confrontation tied to the Front Man. His investigation continues in Season 2, but he faces a practical obstacle: knowing that the organization exists is not the same as having proof that institutions or other people will accept.

That lack of support leaves Jun-ho pursuing the truth with limited official backing. His storyline operates outside the arena and runs parallel to Gi-hun’s attempt to confront the games from within.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Recruiter — Gong Yoo

The Recruiter is the sharply dressed man who challenged Gi-hun to play ddakji in the subway before offering him a path into the competition. In Season 2, Gong Yoo’s character returns with a substantially larger storyline.

He is not an ordinary contestant with a player number. Instead, he is a link between everyday life and the organization’s recruitment process—the point at which financial desperation, chance encounters, and the promise of prize money become connected to the deadly games.

The new contenders and their relationships

The new players are not simply a list of unrelated people with debts. Their histories create smaller alliances and conflicts inside the larger group. Several are connected by family, former relationships, shared vulnerability, or their responses to bullying.

Lee Myung-gi / Player 333 — Yim Si-wan

Myung-gi is a cryptocurrency influencer whose financial decisions helped produce devastating losses for himself and his followers. He enters the game because he is facing a severe financial crisis and sees the prize as a possible way out.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

His past is also tied to Jun-hee, Player 222. That connection makes his presence in the arena personal as well as financial. Myung-gi is therefore caught between the consequences of his earlier choices and the immediate pressure of surviving the competition.

  • More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.

Kim Jun-hee / Player 222 — Jo Yu-ri

Jun-hee enters after suffering the consequences of a bad investment. Netflix’s description frames her as someone who trusted the wrong person, rather than reducing her situation to simple irresponsibility.

That distinction matters because her history with Myung-gi becomes one of Season 2’s central sources of tension. Player 222 is both part of the new contestant group and connected to a past relationship that cannot easily be left outside the arena.

Kang Dae-ho / Player 388 — Kang Ha-neul

Dae-ho is introduced as a new competitor who may become an ally to Gi-hun. Netflix’s official character material gives fewer biographical details about him than it does about many of the other players, so it is best not to treat more elaborate online backstories as established facts.

His most important early identifier is Player 388 and his possible alignment with Gi-hun’s effort to resist the games.

Park Gyeong-seok / Player 246 — Lee Jin-uk

Gyeong-seok is a devoted father who enters the competition to protect his family. His motivation places him among the players driven by responsibilities beyond their own survival.

Player 246 represents a familiar but important Squid Game pressure point: the games turn a person’s love for family into a reason to accept extraordinary danger.

Cho Hyun-ju / Player 120 — Park Sung-hoon

Hyun-ju is a former soldier who enters in order to obtain essential medical treatment. Netflix emphasizes her selflessness and willingness to help other people, making Player 120 one of the season’s principal sympathetic contenders.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hyun-ju becomes associated with a more cooperative group of players, including Young-mi and Se-mi. Netflix’s official coverage of the Mingle sequence identifies Young-mi as one of the innocent players connected with Hyun-ju’s group.

Park Yong-sik / Player 007 — Yang Dong-geun

Yong-sik is a compulsive gambler carrying serious debt. His situation becomes even more complicated when he realizes that an unexpected loved one is also inside the competition.

That loved one is his mother, Jang Geum-ja, Player 149. Player 007 is consequently part of one of the season’s most important family dynamics: mother and son are forced to confront the consequences of gambling debt together.

Jang Geum-ja / Player 149 — Kang Ae-shim

Geum-ja is a strong-willed older contestant who enters to help a relative in serious trouble. Her motivation is directly connected to Yong-sik’s predicament, although her presence in the arena is not simply an extension of his story.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Player 149 brings a family-centered perspective to the competition. Her relationship with Player 007 gives the season a continuing focus on how the games affect relatives who would otherwise never have entered the same situation.

Park Jung-bae / Player 390 — Lee Seo-hwan

Jung-bae is new to the arena but familiar to viewers. He is Gi-hun’s longtime friend and former co-worker, previously seen gambling with him at the racetrack.

  • Smart and always getting smarter: Fire TV adds new Alexa skills, features, smart home capabilities, and voice functionality all the time.

That history makes Player 390 different from the other new contenders. Gi-hun is not surrounded only by strangers this time; he has an emotionally recognizable ally inside the renewed competition, which raises the personal stakes of his return.

Kim Young-mi / Player 095 — Kim Si-eun

Young-mi is a quieter contestant who becomes part of the cooperative grouping around Hyun-ju and Se-mi. Netflix’s official game coverage specifically identifies Player 095 as one of the innocent players during the Mingle sequence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The main Tudum cast guide does not provide a detailed pre-game biography for Young-mi. Her role is clearer through her relationships and conduct in the arena, so claims about an elaborate personal history should be treated cautiously.

Se-mi / Player 380 — Won Ji-an

Se-mi is outgoing, bold, and prepared to stand up to bullies. She treats apparently weaker people with kindness but refuses to submit to stronger antagonists.

That combination makes Player 380 a natural part of the solidarity-based group around Hyun-ju and Young-mi. Her conflict with intimidation is one of the clearest ways Season 2 contrasts cooperation with the hierarchy that forms among frightened contestants.

Nam-gyu / Player 124 — Roh Jae-won

Nam-gyu is a former club promoter who bullies weaker players. His cruelty is not presented as random: he uses intimidation to gain approval from people he considers stronger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Player 124 therefore helps establish the contestant hierarchy. He is dangerous not only because of what he does directly, but because he turns fear and group approval into tools for controlling other players.

Thanos / Player 230 — Choi Seung-hyun

Thanos is a failed rapper who lost money in a cryptocurrency investment. He enters the games desperate to win and is characterized by Netflix as unpredictable and immature.

The nickname alludes to Marvel’s Thanos, but the Squid Game character is not a superhero or a literal version of that villain. The reference is part of the character’s presentation; Player 230 remains a desperate, volatile contestant shaped by financial loss.

Min-su / Player 125 — Lee David

Min-su is shy and struggles to assert himself among more aggressive players. Netflix says he entered after falling victim to a housing scam.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Player 125 should not be confused with the Season 1 VIP identified as VIP 3. They are separate characters, despite the possible confusion created by the numbering and the franchise’s recurring use of masked or numbered figures.

Seon-nyeo / Player 044 — Chae Kuk-hee

Seon-nyeo is a shaman whose prophecies unsettle the other contestants. Her presence adds a spiritual and psychological dimension to the player group.

However, the official character material does not establish that her predictions have supernatural validity. The important point is how the prophecies affect the people around her—not that the series has confirmed her as genuinely clairvoyant.

No-eul: the important character outside the regular player group

No-eul — Park Gyu-young

No-eul is a former North Korean soldier and defector whose central personal objective is finding the child from whom she has been separated. She is not introduced as an ordinary contestant in the arena.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Her work and military background connect her to the wider machinery surrounding the games, giving Season 2 another perspective on the organization beyond Gi-hun’s investigation and the Front Man’s administration. No-eul’s storyline is best understood as part of the show’s broader network of people who support, serve, or are harmed by the competition.

Who is Player 095?

Player 095 is Kim Young-mi, played by Kim Si-eun. She is a quieter new contestant who becomes associated with Cho Hyun-ju’s cooperative group, including Se-mi. Netflix’s official explanation of the Mingle game identifies Young-mi as one of the innocent players in that group.

The character guide does not supply a complete biography for Young-mi before she enters the game. What viewers can establish from the official material is her player number, her connection to the cooperative players, and her role in the Mingle sequence—not an invented detailed history.

Other player numbers worth remembering

  • Player 456: Seong Gi-hun, the Season 1 winner who returns to stop the games.
  • Player 333: Lee Myung-gi, the cryptocurrency influencer in financial crisis.
  • Player 388: Kang Dae-ho, a potential ally to Gi-hun.
  • Player 246: Park Gyeong-seok, a father trying to protect his family.
  • Player 120: Cho Hyun-ju, a former soldier seeking medical treatment.
  • Player 007: Park Yong-sik, the indebted compulsive gambler.
  • Player 149: Jang Geum-ja, Yong-sik’s strong-willed mother.
  • Player 390: Park Jung-bae, Gi-hun’s longtime friend.
  • Player 222: Kim Jun-hee, whose past with Myung-gi complicates the game.
  • Player 095: Kim Young-mi, part of Hyun-ju and Se-mi’s cooperative group.
  • Player 044: Seon-nyeo, the unsettling shaman.
  • Player 125: Min-su, a shy housing-scam victim.
  • Player 124: Nam-gyu, a former club promoter who bullies weaker players.
  • Player 230: Thanos, the volatile failed rapper.
  • Player 380: Se-mi, an outspoken opponent of bullying.

How the Season 2 cast differs from Season 1

Season 1 built its emotional core around strangers who gradually formed relationships under pressure. Season 2 keeps Gi-hun as the audience’s main point of entry, but gives him a different challenge: he is returning with knowledge, intent, and a direct objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The new cast is organized around recognizable sources of pressure:

  • Financial collapse: Myung-gi, Jun-hee, Thanos, Min-su, and Yong-sik are connected to investments, scams, gambling, or debt.
  • Family responsibility: Gyeong-seok, Yong-sik, and Geum-ja enter with concerns that extend beyond individual survival.
  • Solidarity versus intimidation: Hyun-ju, Young-mi, and Se-mi form a more cooperative grouping, while Nam-gyu uses bullying to build status.
  • Personal history: Gi-hun and Jung-bae know each other from before the games, while Myung-gi and Jun-hee share a troubled past.
  • The machinery around the games: No-eul, Jun-ho, the Recruiter, and the Front Man show different positions outside the ordinary contestant role.

Where to find an ending explanation

This guide intentionally stops short of explaining the Season 2 ending or cataloguing major deaths. Those details change the reading experience for anyone who has not finished all seven episodes. After watching, Netflix’s separate Season 2 ending explainer is the appropriate place for a full spoiler discussion.
