There will be no Countdown Season 2. Jensen Ackles previously said he was “absolutely pushing for it,” but Prime Video canceled the action thriller after one season on October 10, 2025. Ackles later confirmed that Amazon was letting the series go, making clear that his enthusiasm for a return had never amounted to an official renewal.
What happened to Countdown Season 2?
Prime Video canceled Countdown after its first season, so the series will not return for a second season on the service. The decision was reported on October 10, 2025, after the show completed its 13-episode run.
The cancellation came several months after star Jensen Ackles and creator Derek Haas had spoken positively about the show’s prospects. Those earlier comments created understandable optimism among viewers, but neither comment represented a Season 2 order. Prime Video had not renewed the series before canceling it.
Jensen Ackles wanted to return
During a July 21, 2025 interview with Men’s Health, Ackles was asked about the possibility of continuing the series. He said he was “absolutely pushing for it” and described making Countdown as one of the best experiences of his career.

That was a strong expression of interest from the show’s lead actor, not confirmation that additional episodes had been commissioned. Actors can advocate for a continuation, but the renewal decision belongs to the distributor and studio involved in the production. In this case, Ackles’s public support did not change Prime Video’s eventual decision.
What creator Derek Haas said about the show’s chances
Creator Derek Haas was also cautiously optimistic in late July 2025. He pointed to the show’s week-to-week audience growth and suggested that its future could depend on viewers continuing to watch.
However, the same reporting made clear that Prime Video had not officially approved Season 2 at the time. Haas’s comments described a possible path forward, not a confirmed production. The distinction matters because early renewal coverage often repeats hopeful comments long after a show has received a final decision.

What was Countdown about?
Countdown is an action thriller led by Ackles as Mark Meachum, an LAPD detective. The story begins when a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight. Meachum is then recruited into a secret multi-agency task force created to investigate the killing and uncover a larger threat to Los Angeles.
The Prime Video listing identifies the series as a 2025 title with one season and 13 episodes. Its principal cast includes Jensen Ackles, Eric Dane, and Jessica Camacho.
For viewers who want to revisit the existing episodes, the official viewing option is watch Countdown on Prime Video. That reference is to Season 1 only and should not be read as evidence of a renewal.
Would Season 1’s cliffhanger have led to Season 2?
Spoiler warning for the end of Season 1: The finale leaves the task force pursuing a sniper and places Jessica Camacho’s character, Oliveras, in serious danger after her kidnapping.
Ackles had imagined Mark Meachum reacting forcefully to the cliffhanger. Haas also discussed possible directions for a second season, including whether Oliveras would survive and how her relationship with Meachum might develop.

Those remarks show that the creative team had ideas for continuing the story, but they do not mean those stories will be produced. No episodes based on those possibilities were commissioned, and the cliffhanger remains unresolved on screen.
Why the earlier renewal reports are now outdated
Some searches may still surface headlines built around Ackles’s July comments or Haas’s optimism. Those reports were accurate descriptions of the situation at the time, but they are incomplete if presented as the current status.
The correct distinction is:
- Before October 10, 2025: Ackles wanted another season, and Haas was hopeful, but Prime Video had not renewed the show.
- After October 10, 2025: Prime Video had canceled Countdown after one season.
Accordingly, Countdown should be described as canceled, not renewed, or a series for which there will be no Season 2—not as a show still awaiting renewal.

There is no credible evidence in the available reporting that another platform has acquired the series or that Prime Video has reversed its decision. A revival is theoretically possible for some canceled shows, but there is no announced deal to report here.
Until an official announcement says otherwise, the practical status is final: Countdown ended after one season, despite Ackles’s desire to return and the unresolved story introduced in the finale.
