Much of the early coverage became tangled around Andrew Frelon, who presented himself to reporters as a spokesperson for The Velvet Sundown. On 2 July 2025, he told MusicTech that the music had been made with Suno and portrayed the project as a marketing exercise or troll.
That account did not hold up as an official explanation. By 4 July, Frelon told Rolling Stone that he had been hoaxing the media, while The Velvet Sundown’s Spotify page said it had no affiliation with him. The following day, a revised Spotify bio gave the project’s own disclosure: it was synthetic and made with AI support.
