Cutting cable in 2026 no longer means giving up live news, sports, local broadcasts, or documentary channels. The better question is which streaming bundle matches the channels you actually watch—and whether its advertised price still looks good after regional sports fees, local-channel limits, and promotional pricing disappear.
For most households, YouTube TV is the strongest all-purpose replacement. Hulu + Live TV makes more sense if you already use Hulu and Disney+, while Sling TV is the best way to build a cheaper, narrower package. Philo and Frndly TV are inexpensive entertainment options, but neither replaces broadcast television or major sports on its own.
Prices and channel availability below are U.S. figures checked on August 9, 2026. Your ZIP code, device, taxes, promotions, blackouts, and regional rights can change the result.
Quick comparison
| Service | Starting price | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | $82.99/month | Most households replacing cable | Local channels and sports coverage vary by ZIP code |
| Hulu + Live TV | $89.99/month with ads | Hulu, Disney+, ESPN, and live TV in one bill | Higher price and plan-specific sports access |
| Sling TV | $19.99/month for Essentials | Low-cost, customizable channel packages | Local channels are limited; Orange allows only one stream |
| Fubo | $55.99/month for Sports + News | Sports-heavy homes and regional coverage shoppers | Regional sports fees and nine-month recording expiration |
| DIRECTV | $20.99/month for Genre Packs | Large lineups and regional sports availability | Comparable full packages can cost much more |
| Philo | $25/month | Entertainment and lifestyle channels | No conventional local-channel or major-sports replacement |
| Frndly TV | $8.99/month | Family, lifestyle, weather, and feel-good programming | No ESPN, major news bundle, or local broadcast replacement |
Best overall: YouTube TV
YouTube TV is the easiest recommendation for a household that wants one broad live-TV service without rebuilding a cable package channel by channel. Its main plan costs $82.99 per month and includes more than 100 channels, unlimited cloud DVR, up to six household accounts, and three simultaneous streams.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
The distinction between accounts and streams matters. Six people can have separate profiles, but the standard plan does not let six devices watch at once. The 4K Plus add-on adds unlimited streams at home, offline recordings, and access to available 4K programming, but it raises the total bill.
YouTube TV is particularly practical for viewers who move between live broadcasts and recorded programming. The unlimited DVR removes the usual cable-box storage calculation, although “unlimited” does not mean every channel or program is available in every market. Check the service’s ZIP-code results for local ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and regional sports coverage before subscribing.
There is also a Sports Plan for $64.99 per month with more than 30 channels. It is not automatically the right replacement for the main plan: compare its included networks with the sports and news channels your household needs.
Best bundle: Hulu + Live TV
Hulu + Live TV is most compelling when you already pay for Hulu, Disney+, or ESPN-related programming. The ad-supported plan costs $89.99 per month; the premium version costs $99.99 per month. Both include live television, while the base offer also bundles Hulu, Disney+ with ads, and ESPN Select.
Hulu advertises more than 100 live channels and unlimited DVR. Eligible subscribers may receive a three-day trial. The bundle is valuable because it combines an on-demand library with live channels rather than forcing you to maintain separate entertainment subscriptions.
Rank #2
- 4K streaming made simple:With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- 4K picture quality: With Roku Streaming Stick Plus, watch your favorites with brilliant 4K picture and vivid HDR color.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight.
Do not assume that every ESPN service is the same. Hulu’s current offer refers to ESPN Select, with additional ESPN Unlimited content available through separate ESPN apps and plan arrangements. Local channels, blackouts, and channel availability remain market-dependent, so verify the exact lineup rather than relying on the national channel count.
Best budget option with some sports: Sling TV
Sling TV is the best fit when “cutting cable” means paying for only a selected group of networks. Its current menu is broader than the familiar Orange-versus-Blue comparison:
- Essentials: $19.99 per month
- Orange or Blue: $45.99 per month
- Orange & Blue: $60.99 per month
- Additional current options include Select and combined Essentials & Select plans
Orange includes more than 30 channels and one stream. Blue includes more than 40 channels and three streams. Orange & Blue includes more than 50 channels and up to four streams, although Orange-exclusive channels can affect how many people can watch simultaneously.
Sling is not a complete local-TV replacement by default. Sling Orange does not include local channels, and local FOX and NBC availability depends on both market and plan. If you choose Sling for the price, budget for an over-the-air antenna if you need local news, network sports, or broadcast shows. That antenna cost should be included in the comparison—not treated as an afterthought.
Best for regional sports shoppers: Fubo
Fubo deserves a close look from households choosing a service around sports rights rather than general channel volume. Its current plans include Sports + News at $55.99 per month, Pro at $73.99, and Elite at $83.99. The comparison pages list five-day trials, ABC/CBS/FOX availability, ESPN Unlimited on qualifying plans, and local NBA, NHL, and MLB games in applicable markets.

- Stunning 4K and Dolby Vision streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
The phrase “in applicable markets” does most of the work. Regional sports rights differ by team and ZIP code, and a national network listing does not guarantee that every local game will be available. Blackouts can still apply.
Fubo can also add a regional sports fee of $3.99 to $16.99 per month, depending on location. Its listed plans keep recordings for nine months, so the service’s recording policy is not identical to a permanent archive despite its broad DVR features. Add the regional fee to the advertised rate before comparing Fubo with YouTube TV or DIRECTV.
Best for large lineups and regional availability: DIRECTV
The service now presents its streaming products under the DIRECTV brand, including Genre Packs and Streaming TV Packages. Do not assume every current page or plan should be called “DIRECTV STREAM.”
Genre Packs are useful for narrower needs: MyEntertainment costs $42.99 per month, MySports $64.99, MiEspañol $37.99, and MyKids $20.99. The entry-level Genre Pack price is $20.99 per month. Traditional streaming packages start at $89.99 and offer up to 185 or more channels, with local channels in each package and regional sports networks in select packages.
DIRECTV is worth comparing when a particular regional sports network or large channel lineup matters more than having the lowest monthly bill. Its price structure is harder to summarize than Sling’s, so compare the exact package available at your address and include any applicable fees before deciding.

- Hides behind your TV: The all-new design plugs right into your TV with a simple setup
- Super-fast startup: Start streaming channels like Disney+, Prime Video, HBO Max, Apple TV+, Netflix, Sling, and Hulu in a snap—just turn on your TV
- Long-range Wi-Fi: Enjoy fast, smooth TV streaming in any room with a strong Wi-Fi connection, now up to 2x faster
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku Streaming Stick with the Roku remote
- Voice search & control: Quickly search, play entertainment, and control your streaming device with the voice remote
Best entertainment-only value: Philo
Philo Essential costs $25 per month and includes more than 200 live pay-TV and free channels, more than 75,000 on-demand titles, three simultaneous streams, and one year of unlimited DVR. Its core lineup includes more than 70 major channels focused on entertainment, lifestyle, factual, and related programming.
Recommended Free Tools
Philo is an attractive companion to an antenna or a sports-focused service. It is not a conventional cable replacement if your checklist includes local broadcast stations, ESPN, major national sports networks, or comprehensive live news. Its inexpensive price reflects that narrower purpose.
The optional Bundle+ plan costs $33 per month and adds access to HBO Max Basic with Ads, AMC+, discovery+, and All Reality. Compare the bundle against the separate subscriptions you already pay for; otherwise its headline savings may be smaller than expected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Cheapest family-focused option: Frndly TV
Frndly TV starts at $8.99 per month and concentrates on family, lifestyle, weather, and feel-good entertainment. All three tiers carry the same channel lineup, so the decision is mainly about picture quality, simultaneous streams, and DVR retention:
| Plan | Price | Streams | DVR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $8.99/month | One | No listed DVR period; SD video |
| Classic | $10.99/month | Two | Three months; HD video |
| Premium | $12.99/month | Four | Nine months; HD video |
Every plan has a seven-day free trial. Frndly TV works well for a specific type of household, but it should not be presented as a substitute for local stations, ESPN, or a full news-and-sports bundle.
Best Value
- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
How to choose without overpaying
- List must-have channels, not just genres. Write down the exact local stations, sports networks, documentary channels, news channels, and entertainment networks you watch.
- Check your ZIP code. Use each provider’s channel checker before subscribing. National counts can include free channels, regional feeds, and content unavailable in your market.
- Price the regular rate. Separate introductory offers from the renewal price. YouTube TV’s previously advertised $67.99 introductory offer ended June 30, 2026; its regular main-plan rate is $82.99.
- Add regional fees. This is especially important with Fubo, where the regional sports fee can add $3.99 to $16.99 per month.
- Count streams separately from profiles. Three simultaneous streams is not the same as six household accounts. Check how many people watch at the same time.
- Decide whether you need an antenna. Sling and Philo may be excellent values when paired with an antenna, but the combined cost is the more honest cable-replacement figure.
- Check DVR retention. Fubo recordings expire after nine months, Frndly TV retention depends on tier, and Philo lists one year of unlimited DVR. Unlimited storage is not automatically permanent storage.
- Check sports blackouts. A service can carry a league or network while still blocking a particular game in your area.
Which service is best for documentary viewers?
There is no single documentary-specific winner because factual programming is spread across general entertainment, science, history, lifestyle, news, and free ad-supported channels. YouTube TV is the safest broad replacement if you want a large live lineup and recording space. Philo may be the better value if your viewing is mostly entertainment and factual channels and you do not need local stations or sports. Hulu + Live TV is sensible for viewers who want live channels alongside a substantial on-demand bundle.
Before choosing, search each provider’s current channel list for the specific networks and programs you follow. A higher channel count is not proof that it carries your preferred documentary channel, and an on-demand catalog may change independently of the live lineup.

Which live TV service is best for sports?
There is no universal winner because sports rights and regional blackouts vary. Compare Fubo and DIRECTV by ZIP code and team, and include Fubo’s possible $3.99-to-$16.99 regional sports fee. Sling can be cheaper for viewers who need only selected sports networks.
Can live TV streaming completely replace cable?
It can, but not every service replaces every part of cable. Check local channels, sports networks, simultaneous streams, DVR retention, blackouts, and regular renewal pricing. Sling or Philo may also require an antenna if you want broadcast locals.
The Bottom Line
Choose YouTube TV for the most balanced cable replacement. Choose Hulu + Live TV if its Hulu, Disney+, and ESPN bundle replaces subscriptions you already pay for. Choose Sling TV when a smaller package and lower bill matter most, and pair it with an antenna if necessary. Compare Fubo and DIRECTV for regional sports by ZIP code, while Philo and Frndly TV are best understood as inexpensive entertainment services rather than full cable substitutes.
