Predator: Badlands is receiving some of the strongest early notices in the franchise’s history—but the praise comes with an important qualification. Critics are responding to Dan Trachtenberg’s willingness to rebuild the series around a Predator rather than another group of human soldiers, while some longtime fans may find that same choice less satisfying.
The film opened in U.S. theaters on November 7, 2025, and is now available to watch digitally. It arrived on Hulu and Disney+ on February 12, 2026.

A Predator becomes the film’s protagonist
Directed and co-written by Dan Trachtenberg, who previously made Prey, Predator: Badlands follows Dek, a young Yautja cast out by his own clan. After landing on the hostile planet Genna, Dek begins a dangerous hunt in an unfamiliar environment.
This setup changes the franchise’s usual point of view. Earlier Predator stories generally ask whether human characters can survive a hunt against an almost unbeatable alien warrior. Badlands instead places the audience behind the mask—or at least much closer to the Predator’s experience.

Dek is not presented only as an unstoppable trophy hunter. His exile, vulnerability, and need to prove himself give the character a more conventional dramatic arc. That is the film’s biggest creative gamble, and it is also the element that has divided critics most sharply.
The Dek and Thia partnership drives the story
On Genna, Dek forms an alliance with Thia, a damaged Weyland-Yutani android played by Elle Fanning. Their relationship is the emotional center of the film and a major reason the early response has been more enthusiastic than a simple creature-feature review might suggest.
Reviewers have highlighted the contrast between the two characters: Dek is a hunted member of a violent warrior culture, while Thia is an artificial person connected to the corporate world familiar from the Alien films. Their partnership gives the movie room for humor, vulnerability, and questions about identity alongside the action.
That connection also expands the relationship between the Predator and Alien universes. The Weyland-Yutani material is not merely a reference for fans; it gives the story another way to examine what makes a person—or a machine, or a Yautja—worthy of loyalty and empathy.

Rotten Tomatoes’ early-review roundup described the response as largely positive, with particular praise for the film’s visual design, creature work, world-building, action, and emotional dimension.

Variety’s Peter Debruge called it the strongest film with “Predator” in the title since the 1987 original, while treating Prey as a separate benchmark rather than simply ranking every entry together.
Matt Zoller Seitz of RogerEbert.com praised Badlands as an unusually strong science-fiction action thriller. His review singled out the inventive creatures and plants, the tightly organized screenplay, the memorable characters, and the performances—particularly arguing that the acting deserved more awards consideration than genre films typically receive.
Fanning’s performance is a recurring point of praise. Thia could have been reduced to a familiar android archetype, but the reviews suggest that Fanning gives the character enough personality to make the Dek–Thia relationship feel like more than a functional odd-couple pairing.

Why the reaction is not unanimous
The same decision that makes Dek more accessible also changes what the Predator represents. The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw objected to humanizing the character, arguing that making the Predator sympathetic and vulnerable weakens the qualities that traditionally define the creature.

That criticism points to a real tension in the film. The original Predator was built around menace, physical dominance, macho action, and the fear of an enemy whose motives were only gradually understood. Badlands is more interested in companionship and personal development. It wants audiences to care about the Yautja at the center of the story, not merely fear him.
Some reviewers also warned that fans may miss the brutality, gore, stripped-down suspense, and horror emphasis associated with earlier entries. The film’s PG-13 rating makes that shift explicit. Rotten Tomatoes’ current reception reflects the overall enthusiasm: the film is listed at 86% from 277 critics’ reviews and 94% from more than 5,000 verified audience ratings. Those figures can change as the site adds reviews and ratings, but they show that the positive response extends beyond the first wave of professional notices.
Audience response and box office
The film’s commercial performance also suggests that its new direction reached beyond the existing fan base. Predator: Badlands earned approximately $184 million worldwide against a reported $105 million production budget, making it the franchise’s highest-grossing film by nominal worldwide gross.

Trachtenberg’s approach treats the Predator mythology as a foundation for different genres and character perspectives rather than as a fixed template.

The strongest case for Predator: Badlands is that it takes a familiar property seriously enough to risk changing it. Dek’s perspective, Thia’s android identity, and the planet Genna give the film a distinct shape, while the action and creature design preserve recognizable elements of the franchise.
The strongest case against it is equally clear: turning the Predator into a character audiences are expected to understand and support reduces some of the mystery and menace that made the original so effective.

That makes the early headline—fresh, thrilling, ambitious, and potentially one of the franchise’s best—fair as a description of the film’s reception, but not as a unanimous verdict. Critics who wanted another brutal human-survival story have reservations. Those open to a character-led science-fiction adventure may see Badlands as the most imaginative expansion of the series in years.
