Anatomy of a Fall (Anatomie d’une chute) is a 2023 French courtroom drama directed by Justine Triet and written by Triet and Arthur Harari. It begins with a death that looks suspicious, then gradually becomes something more unsettling: an examination of how evidence, memory, language, and private resentment are turned into a public story.
The film stars Sandra Hüller as Sandra Voyter, Samuel Theis as Samuel Maleski, and Milo Machado-Graner as their visually impaired son, Daniel. Running 151 minutes, it moves between French and English, with German also part of its multilingual world. That language shifting is not decorative. It affects what the characters mean, how testimony is interpreted, and how Sandra is perceived in court.

What is Anatomy of a Fall about?
Sandra, a German writer, lives with Samuel and Daniel in an isolated chalet in the French Alps. One day, Samuel is found dead below the house after a fall. Sandra is the only obvious person who might explain what happened, but she says she was upstairs and did not see the incident.
The investigation cannot establish a simple account of the death. Was Samuel murdered? Did he die by suicide? Could the fall have been an accident? As the case reaches court, the question expands beyond the physical evidence. Prosecutors begin reconstructing the couple’s marriage, exposing arguments about career, money, parenting, infidelity, resentment, and the accident that left Daniel visually impaired.

The trial therefore becomes less a search for one decisive fact than a contest between competing versions of Sandra and Samuel. Sandra is not judged only on the scene outside the chalet. Her personality, ambition, sexuality, writing, and relationship with her husband are all examined as if they might reveal whether she was capable of killing him.
A courtroom film built around uncertainty
Many murder mysteries promise that the final act will identify the killer. Anatomy of a Fall deliberately refuses that structure. The available evidence is real, but it is incomplete. Audio recordings, expert testimony, medical details, and remembered conversations can suggest several explanations without conclusively proving one.
This is what makes the film different from a conventional whodunit. The court must reach a legal decision even though the audience is not given an omniscient view of Samuel’s final moments. The film asks what a verdict can actually establish. A judgment may determine whether the prosecution has proved guilt beyond a reasonable doubt, but it cannot necessarily recover the full truth of a damaged relationship.
The courtroom also shows how facts are shaped by presentation. A recording of a marital argument is no longer merely a private exchange once it is played to a room of lawyers, judges, and spectators. The same words can become evidence of abuse, frustration, manipulation, or ordinary cruelty, depending on who explains them and what the listener already believes.
Why language matters
Sandra and Samuel’s relationship is multilingual, and the trial keeps drawing attention to that fact. Sandra’s German background and life in France make her appear slightly outside the social world judging her. English sometimes serves as the couple’s shared language, while French dominates the legal setting.

Translation creates distance, but it can also create ambiguity. Tone, implication, humor, and aggression do not always survive conversion from one language to another. Sandra’s words are filtered through interpreters and through assumptions about her identity. The film uses this process to show how easily a person can lose control of their own narrative once others begin translating it.
That concern is particularly important because Sandra is a writer. She understands how stories are constructed, yet she cannot fully control the story built around her. The prosecution treats details from her life as clues to her character, while the defense tries to show that a complicated marriage is not proof of homicide.
Daniel’s role in the case
Daniel is not simply a witness who supplies the missing answer. His visual impairment means that he already experiences the world through sound, memory, and interpretation. His position becomes even more difficult because he is a child caught between his parents and forced to think about what each of them might have wanted or done.

Daniel is processing grief and pressure while trying to make sense of events he did not directly observe. His account illustrates one of the film’s central ideas: people often rely on narratives not because they possess complete knowledge, but because they need a way to live with what cannot be known.
The ending explained
Spoilers ahead.
Sandra is acquitted. Daniel’s testimony is decisive in creating reasonable doubt, but the film does not prove that Samuel was murdered, that he died by suicide, or that the fall was an accident. Sandra’s acquittal means the prosecution did not establish her criminal guilt; it is not a final explanation of Samuel’s death.

The distinction is essential. The ending does not secretly confirm Sandra’s innocence or reveal her guilt through a hidden clue. Instead, it leaves the factual mystery open. The legal system has to close the trial, while Sandra, Daniel, and the audience remain with an unresolved past.
Daniel’s testimony includes a remembered incident involving medication and a conversation with Samuel. He uses that memory to construct a possible explanation for his father’s state of mind. Whether his interpretation is completely accurate is less important than the fact that he needs one. His decision helps Sandra, but it also shows how testimony can be shaped by love, fear, responsibility, and the desire to make an unbearable situation coherent.
Is it based on a true story?
No. Anatomy of a Fall is fictional and is not a dramatization of a specific real case. Triet has described the film as growing from the idea of a couple’s collapse and the nightmare of having private life exposed and dissected in public.
Its realism comes from the way legal and emotional evidence interact. The film does not need a true-crime origin to feel plausible. Its central situation is disturbing precisely because the available evidence resembles the incomplete, contradictory material from which real investigations and public judgments are often made.
Reception and awards
The film won the Palme d’Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. At the 96th Academy Awards, Triet and Harari won Best Original Screenplay. The film was also nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress for Sandra Hüller, Best Film Editing, and Best Original Screenplay.

France did not submit it for the Oscar category then called Best International Feature Film; that submission was The Taste of Things. Anatomy of a Fall nevertheless competed successfully in other Oscar categories.

One of the film’s most memorable performers is Snoop, Daniel’s border collie service dog, played by Messi. Messi won the 2023 Palm Dog, a critics’ prize associated with Cannes rather than an official Cannes competition award. The distinction matters: the film won the festival’s Palme d’Or, while the dog received the separate Palm Dog honor.

Anatomy of a Fall is compelling because it does not treat uncertainty as a puzzle that must be eliminated. It shows how a court can transform a marriage into evidence, how language can alter testimony, and how a child may be forced to choose a workable story when no complete account is available.
For viewers who prefer documentaries and investigative films, its most familiar element may be the process of reconstruction: experts interpret physical traces, lawyers organize fragments into arguments, and witnesses give imperfect accounts of the past. But this is a fictional drama, not a documentary or a true-crime reconstruction. Its subject is not simply who caused Samuel’s death. It is the unstable boundary between fact, interpretation, and the stories people tell in order to survive.

No. It is a fictional film written by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari. Its realistic courtroom setting and relationship conflicts are not based on one specific real case.
Best Value
Who killed Samuel in Anatomy of a Fall?
The film never establishes this definitively. Samuel’s death could be interpreted as suicide, an accident, or murder. The deliberate ambiguity is central to the film.
What happens at the end of Anatomy of a Fall?
Sandra is acquitted of killing Samuel. Daniel’s testimony helps create reasonable doubt, but the verdict does not prove exactly how Samuel died.
Did Anatomy of a Fall win an Oscar?
Yes. It won the 2024 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Justine Triet and Arthur Harari. Sandra Hüller was nominated for Best Actress but did not win.
The Bottom Line
Anatomy of a Fall is a fictional, multilingual courtroom drama about the limits of evidence and the damage caused when a private relationship becomes a public case. Sandra’s acquittal resolves the legal question, not the mystery of Samuel’s death—and that unresolved gap is the film’s point.
