Greece is battling tax evasion

Greece, grappling with a debt of more than 300 billion euros, is in dire need of its citizens’tax contributions. However, tax fraud has cheated the state of billions of euros every year, leaving the government desperate for a solution. In an attempt to combat this issue, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras pledged to aggressively combat tax evasion, but while many such declarations have been made before, little action had been taken until now. Enter a group of tax inspectors, who are tasked with investigating the businesses, shops, and restaurants potentially involved in tax evasion. But their job is not an easy one.

Despite a groundbreaking directive, the property registers remains sealed, and business owners are often uncooperative. This documentary will accompany two inspectors on their perilous rounds as they strive to protect their country’s fragile economy by cracking down on tax evasion, the villains who avoid taxes, and the rules that permit them to thrive in today’s Greece.
