The Red Sea is a seawater inlet of the Indian Ocean, lying between Africa and Asia. Its connection to the ocean is in the south, through the Bab el Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Aden. To its north lie the Sinai Peninsula, the Gulf of Aqaba, and the Gulf of Suez.
It is the saltiest sea of all seas that connect to the ocean without even one river meeting the sea. One of the popular theories about the origins of the Red Sea’s name is that it contains a cyanobacteria that turns the normally blue-green water into a reddish brown.
The Red Sea is one of the most heavily traveled waterways in the world because of its connection to the Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal.
