That Summer is a prequel of sorts to the cult-classic documentary Grey Gardens, and it centres on Peter Beard’s attempt to make a documentary during the summer months. Set in Montauk, New York, the film follows not only Beard’s process of making the documentary but also details of life in the area at that time.
The documentary captures both the beauty and joys of day-to-day life in Montauk, as well as exploring deeper social issues such as class distinctions. As we see through both archival footage and interviews with people from different walks of life, we get an insight into how each person experienced their summer differently.
