The story begins in the 18th century, when electricity first became a major source of energy. As the decades passed, breakthroughs in science and technology allowed us to better understand and harness this powerful force. We eventually learned that electricity could be used to power homes, vehicles, buildings and so much more.
In episode one of the series, Professor Jim Al-Khalili dives into the history of electricity and explores how early innovators like George Westinghouse developed ways of using it safely. He also looks at some of the key inventions along this journey such as the battery, alternating current and transformers.
Episode two explores our modern energy grid system and why it is so important for providing reliable electrical power around the world. Professor Al-Khalili examines some of the advances in renewable energy technologies such as solar panels and wind turbines that are helping to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
