Zac Efron said he was nervous when he first worked with Nicole Kidman on The Paperboy, years before they reunited as romantic leads in A Family Affair. From The Paperboy to A Family Affair
Efron and Kidman first appeared together in Lee Daniels’s 2012 crime thriller The Paperboy. They reunited in A Family Affair, a romantic comedy released on Netflix on June 28, 2024. Why Efron said he was nervous
Efron described himself as still enamored with Kidman, but said that feeling of awe had been stronger when he was younger and first worked with her. “I think that was more pronounced during The Paperboy because I was a lot younger. I was very nervous back then,” he said, in remarks Just Jared attributed to People.
In The Paperboy, Efron’s character is drawn to Kidman’s character, who is romantically involved with a convicted killer, according to NDTV’s syndicated account. In A Family Affair, Efron plays a Hollywood star who pursues the mother of his assistant, played by Joey King.

How their earlier history helped with intimate scenes
Kidman said that returning to work with someone she already knew meant they did not have to establish a personal history from the beginning. “It’s really helpful when you’re doing this sort of work together that you’ve already got a history together, because it’s easy. You’re not working to create a history. So I’m not like, ‘Can I touch you?’ I feel incredibly trusting of Zac,” she said.
Efron described the dynamic as mutual care: “We both feel safe, and we take care of each other.” Their comments frame the reunion not simply as a second pairing, but as a collaboration with trust already in place.
