The series begins when Yusuke dies saving a child from a speeding car. Botan guides him to the spirit world, where Koenma offers him a way back to life: investigate demons and other supernatural threats. Netflix’s current title page calls the job “Spirit Detective,” while its Tudum description uses “Underworld Detective.” Both labels refer to Yusuke’s detective role in the story.

The live-action adaptation is based on Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga, which was published in Weekly Shonen Jump under Shueisha’s Jump Comics imprint. Netflix’s December 14, 2023 cast guide described the manga as having more than 78 million copies in circulation worldwide at that time; that figure is not a current sales total. See Netflix Tudum’s cast and series guide for its account.
How many episodes are there, and when did the series premiere?
Netflix’s live-action Yu Yu Hakusho premiered worldwide on December 14, 2023, and has five episodes. Netflix credits Shô Tsukikawa as director and Tatsurō Mishima as screenwriter. The production and release details are in Netflix’s premiere announcement and on the Netflix series page.

How did the production create its supernatural action?
Netflix’s December 5, 2023 production feature describes using Scanline VFX for the series’ supernatural action. Netflix says performance capture used 170 cameras filming actors simultaneously in 360 degrees, with that capture used to create CG character assets. The feature also describes practical 3D models of the Toguro brothers attached to actors during filming to help establish scale and sight lines. These are production details reported by Netflix, not independently audited measurements.
Visual effects producer Tomofumi Akahane told Netflix: “With Scanline VFX on board, we were able to reach higher than any other Japanese title and achieve a quality where the average viewer won’t be able to tell that CGI is actually CGI.” Action director Takahito Ouchi emphasized performance in the same feature: “No matter how much you tell them that an enemy is there, they need to get fired up enough to make it seem like they are really fighting. And that realism is born from the passion of the actors.” These are the production team’s assessments of the work. Read Netflix’s visual-effects feature.
