YouTube’s TV Redesign: What Changed and What’s New in 2026

YouTube’s TV redesign keeps a video on screen while making room for comments, descriptions, chapters, shopping information and, in sports contexts, live data. Announced on March 13, 2024, the project has since evolved into a broader redesign of YouTube’s living-room experience. Its goal is to encourage more interaction without turning the TV into a phone-sized interface—or obscuring the video.

What the redesign changes

The central idea is a smaller player paired with supporting information beside or around it. Rather than replacing the video with a full-screen comments or details page, the interface is designed to keep playback visible while viewers explore the material around it. Pause, rewind and fast-forward remain central, with remote-friendly controls intended for the living room.

YouTube described this as balancing “lean-back” viewing with “lean-in” interaction. A viewer can stay with a video while opening its description, reading comments, jumping to a chapter, checking a key play or looking at a creator-promoted product. The exact layout depends on the device and feature.

Why YouTube wants more interaction on TV

YouTube’s March 2024 announcement said viewers watched more than 1 billion hours of YouTube per day on TV screens. That is a company-reported figure from the announcement, not a current independently audited measurement. YouTube’s rationale was that television is a major viewing environment in its own right, and that viewers may want additional information when a video catches their interest—provided it does not cover the main content. YouTube’s announcement framed the challenge as adding useful interaction while preserving simple remote-controlled viewing.

For the company, an interactive watch page creates more opportunities for viewers to comment, subscribe, browse channels, explore related material and shop. Those are design aims, not proof that the redesign has increased watch time, subscriptions, click-through rates or revenue. YouTube has not disclosed a measured causal lift in those outcomes in the cited announcements.

What was announced in 2024—and what was still a future idea

The March 2024 announcement named descriptions, comments, chapters, key plays, creator shopping items and live sports scores among the uses for the richer watch page. YouTube also said the experience would extend to its separate YouTube TV service, including sports-related “Views.” Live chat, fantasy views and multiview were described as possibilities for future expansion, not as features guaranteed to be available to every viewer at launch.

That distinction matters: an announcement is not a universal feature list. Availability can depend on the app, device, country, account, video or event, and rollout stage. YouTube later described additional TV changes, but that does not mean every 2024 feature appeared on every television.

How the TV watch page evolved through 2026

2024: a broader TV presentation

After the initial announcement, YouTube described a fresher TV interface, more immersive creator channel pages and changes to Shorts on TV. The Shorts experience was intended to let viewers interact with comments and shopping information without leaving the content. YouTube’s 2024 feature update places the watch-page changes within a wider effort to make creator and discovery features work on television.

December 2025: watch-page controls reorganized

A December 2025 TeamYouTube notice described a redesigned watch page with the title moved to the upper-left of the player and controls grouped by function. The title was no longer the route to details: a dedicated Description button opened metadata, comments and creator details. Subscribe was made persistently visible, while multiview and Display Mode appeared where applicable. The notice’s stated control grouping was:

A separate Q3–Q4 2025 recap also mentioned more visible comments and likes, previews for movies, playlists and mixes, and a more immersive TV experience: YouTube’s TV feature recap.

May 2026: search, chapters and discovery

YouTube’s May 14, 2026 Q1 recap listed conversational search through a TV remote’s microphone or a sparkle icon, chapter panels inside descriptions, gaming title cards that lead to dedicated game pages, like counts on the TV watch page, improved Top Channels recommendations, Up Next teasers and family-group profiles on the “Who’s watching?” screen. It also described an opt-out for family profiles appearing on the TV. These are reported improvements, not a guarantee of identical availability across accounts and devices. What viewers may see—and why the layout can differ

On a supported app and device, the basic interaction is to open a video, bring up its controls with the remote and select an available option such as Description, Comments, Like, Save or Subscribe. Supporting information can then appear while the video remains visible. Directional controls move between playback and engagement functions.

Do not expect a universal menu path or identical screen. YouTube and YouTube TV are distinct products, and the interface may vary by device, account, content type, region and rollout. A feature can also depend on a particular event or subscription. If you do not see a control, that alone does not establish that it has been removed.

YouTube and YouTube TV are different products

The regular YouTube app on a TV

This is the YouTube app used on supported smart TVs, streaming platforms and gaming consoles. The redesign discussed here focuses on watching individual videos and interacting with their descriptions, comments, creators and related material. The broader watch-page direction does not itself require a YouTube TV subscription.

The paid YouTube TV service

YouTube TV is a separate live-TV streaming service with its own live guide, library, recordings and sports-related functions. YouTube said it would bring the richer experience to YouTube TV as well, but its controls and eligibility are not interchangeable with those in the regular YouTube app. YouTube TV has also separately updated its Live Guide and Library to improve discovery and access to content and recordings. Sports: useful information, with spoiler and eligibility trade-offs

Sports are a natural fit for a watch page that keeps the action visible beside supporting information. YouTube’s announced and later-described uses include scores, key plays, live stats, fantasy information and multiview. These additions can help a viewer follow multiple games or check context without leaving the stream, but scores can spoil an event for someone watching later. YouTube has described spoiler-related functionality in its NFL coverage; whether a score-hiding option is present depends on the product and event. YouTube’s NFL Sunday Ticket feature announcement.

For YouTube TV, an April 2026 announcement introduced full custom multiview, allowing users to choose live content and combine streams across a YouTube TV plan and eligible add-ons such as NFL Sunday Ticket. YouTube warned that a small subset of older devices—reported as less than 5% in that announcement—might not support the full customization experience. Sports rights, packages, device support and feature eligibility can change; the announcement is not a guarantee that every subscriber can combine every stream. Read the custom multiview notice.

Creators and shopping: a new surface, not a universal storefront

Product information beside a video can make a creator’s recommendation easier to discover while the video stays on screen. YouTube has tied its TV strategy to creator discovery, subscriptions, links in descriptions and shopping. In 2024, the company reported that more than 250,000 creators were participating in YouTube Shopping and that the number of creators earning a majority of their YouTube revenue from TV screens had risen by more than 30% year over year. Those are company-reported figures; the cited announcement excerpt does not specify the comparison period, and neither figure establishes that the redesign caused the change. YouTube’s Made On YouTube 2024 announcement.

A TV can be a good place to notice a product, but a remote is awkward for typing an address, entering payment details or completing a form. A phone handoff or QR code can bridge that gap where offered. Product visibility and purchasing options depend on country, creator eligibility, product catalog and video format; viewers should not assume every video has shopping cards or that every purchase can be completed directly on the TV.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

The trade-offs of a smaller player

  • More context, less immersion: Comments, descriptions and sports data can be useful, but a smaller video is less cinematic than full-screen playback.
  • Discovery, but possible distraction: Recommendations and shopping can lead to relevant content or products, while also competing for attention.
  • More options, more remote navigation: A denser set of controls can make common actions less immediate, especially for viewers who prefer simple playback.
  • Information readability: Side panels may be difficult to read from a distance or on a smaller display. TV accessibility settings and display scaling may help; a phone or computer may be more comfortable for extended comment reading.
  • Household privacy: Profile switching can be convenient on a shared screen, but visible family profiles make account controls and opt-out settings relevant.
  • Sports context versus spoilers: Scores and other-game updates add context but can reveal results to viewers watching on delay.

Different activities may call for different amounts of on-screen information. YouTube’s original design discussion described balancing access to comments and descriptions against simplicity and keeping the content visible; one layout need not suit a live chat, a long description and a sports data panel equally well.

If the redesign is missing or uncomfortable

If you do not see a new control

Possible causes include a staged rollout, an unsupported device, an outdated app or TV firmware, a different interface in YouTube TV, a feature unavailable for that content, or an account or regional limitation. Try these checks:

  1. Update the YouTube app on the TV or streaming device.
  2. Restart the TV or device and check for a system-firmware update.
  3. Sign out and back in if the interface appears stale.
  4. Confirm whether the feature is documented for the app you are using—regular YouTube or YouTube TV—and for that kind of content.
  5. Check YouTube’s current help information or test on another supported device before concluding the feature has been removed.

If the screen feels too busy or text is hard to read

Close the description or comments panel to return to a larger player where the interface allows it. Check TV accessibility and scaling settings, and consider reading detailed comments on a closer screen. The smaller player, viewing distance and device-specific scaling can all affect legibility.

If shopping is hard to complete

Browsing on a TV may be easier than checkout. Where the creator or product offers a phone handoff or QR code, use that route rather than assuming the remote can comfortably handle forms, passwords and payment entry.

What the redesign means

YouTube is trying to make the TV app more than a playback screen: it is also a place to find creators, read and respond to viewers, search, explore sports information and discover products. The evolving interface shows that strategy in practice, but its success should not be confused with its intent. The design creates more opportunities to engage; the cited announcements do not demonstrate that those opportunities have produced a measured lift in engagement.
