A March 2025 report said Google was considering giving paid streaming services sold through YouTube more room on the regular YouTube app for televisions. That is not the same product as YouTube TV, Google’s separate live-TV subscription. The reported change was about making YouTube Primetime Channels easier to discover—not bringing every streaming service’s full catalog into YouTube. Its specific home-page rollout has not been confirmed in the official announcements cited here.
What the reported change was
On March 4, 2025, Thurrott reported that Google was considering promoting YouTube Primetime Channels more prominently on the YouTube app’s TV home page. At the time, paid channel content was described as being less visible, under the Movies & TV area. The proposed approach would put more third-party shows and movies into the app’s broader discovery experience, closer to the creator videos viewers already find there. Thurrott’s report attributed the underlying vision to YouTube executive Kurt Wilms: viewers should be able to search for a show without first needing to know whether it came from a creator or a Primetime Channel.
This was a reported plan, not a published launch specification. It did not establish that YouTube would host or surface the complete catalogs of Netflix, Disney+, Max, or every other streaming service. The focus was YouTube’s own marketplace for paid channel subscriptions.
Three products that are easy to confuse
| Product | What it is | What this story concerns |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube app on a TV | The standard YouTube app on a smart TV, streaming device, console, or television platform. | Yes. This is the app whose home-page discovery was reportedly under consideration. |
| YouTube Primetime Channels | Selected third-party streaming subscriptions sold through YouTube. Examples in the report included Paramount+ and NFL Game Pass; availability depends on service and market. | Yes. These subscriptions were the content Google reportedly wanted to make easier to find in the YouTube app. |
| YouTube TV | A separate paid live-TV service with programming, a Live Guide, and a Library. | No. The report was not evidence of a redesign to the YouTube TV live-service interface. |
In other words, “YouTube on TV” means the YouTube app running on a television; it should not be used as shorthand for the branded YouTube TV service. YouTube TV has its own interface and product changes, separate from the reported Primetime Channels placement.

How Primetime Channels work for viewers
Primetime Channels are subscription add-ons that viewers can discover and subscribe to within YouTube. The practical appeal is keeping discovery, viewing, and potentially billing within one YouTube environment. The details are channel-specific, however: a channel’s catalog, supported features, availability, account arrangements, and subscription terms need not match those of another channel.
- Find a service or title: A viewer encounters a channel or program in YouTube.
- Check the offer: Before subscribing, review the displayed price, any trial or introductory period, renewal terms, and what content is included.
- Subscribe through YouTube: The subscription is purchased through YouTube, subject to that channel’s terms. Do not assume a subscription bought directly from the service will automatically transfer or link to YouTube billing.
- Watch within the YouTube experience: Playback and access remain subject to the channel’s catalog, technical support, and regional rights.
A prominent recommendation or title tile does not mean that the program is free, that the whole service catalog is included, or that YouTube has taken ownership of the service. Readers who already subscribe directly should check whether their account can be linked and compare the direct and YouTube-billed options before buying again. Pricing, trial offers, catalogs, and cancellation conditions can change and vary by country.

Why Google would promote paid channels
More discovery can mean more subscriptions
A service that viewers rarely see inside YouTube is harder to sell there. Better placement could make subscriptions more likely and make the marketplace more attractive to participating services. Thurrott’s report said difficulty promoting channels had contributed to Google slowing or stopping the addition of new third-party channels. That makes the proposed redesign a commercial distribution strategy as much as a visual change: Google sells subscriptions through the platform and shares in subscription revenue.
The television screen matters to YouTube
YouTube said in February 2025 that television had become its primary viewing device in the United States by watch time, based on December 2024 data. It also said viewers watched more than one billion hours of YouTube content on TVs daily. These are YouTube’s own figures, not an independent measurement, but they explain why the TV app is valuable beyond creator video and advertising: it is also a potential destination for paid subscriptions and content discovery. YouTube’s 2025 strategy post provides the company’s figures and framing.

Google wants to compete for the discovery layer
Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google TV, Roku, and other platforms also give viewers ways to decide what to watch across services. If viewers can find a paid channel’s show while browsing YouTube, Google has a better chance of keeping that discovery—and the resulting subscription—inside its own product. The strategic idea is a more unified content graph: search and recommendations can bring together creator videos and paid programming without requiring viewers to understand how each title is distributed. That does not, by itself, mean all the services share accounts, catalogs, playback systems, or billing.
What YouTube later announced—and what it did not
On April 23, 2025, YouTube announced a broader redesign of its TV app, with changes planned for summer 2025. The publicly described work included easier navigation, playback and quality improvements, better access to comments and channel information, and easier subscribing. TechCrunch’s coverage of that announcement describes those features.

That announcement is not confirmation of the earlier report’s specific proposal to promote Primetime Channels on the home page. It addressed general TV-app and creator-viewing improvements, and did not publicly specify the cross-service home-page treatment described in March. Nor did the material cited here establish a particular app version, supported-device list, rollout percentage, or region for that proposed feature.

The available official announcements do not confirm that the particular Primetime Channels home-page redesign reported in March 2025 launched in the described form. The accurate status is therefore reported as a plan, but not conclusively verified as a rollout. The phrase “may soon” in the original report was tied to a 2025 expectation, not a guaranteed date. A viewer should check the current YouTube app on their own device and in their country rather than assume that every account has the same layout or channel selection.

How Google TV is different
Google TV is a platform-level home screen and discovery layer on supported devices; YouTube is an individual app that runs on a TV or streaming device. Google TV can use selected services to shape recommendations, independently of whether the YouTube app adopts the reported change. On a supported Google TV device, service selections are managed through Settings → Accounts & Sign In → profile → Your services. Google says the selections influence recommendations, but recommendations are not available for every program or service. Google’s service-selection instructions describe the controls and their limits.
Google also says Google TV recommendations can draw on activity such as watchlist additions, viewing history, selected services, searches, and ratings. The exact inputs and available controls depend on the device and mode. Google’s recommendation and personalization information explains these signals. Google TV recommendations are not proof that a title is integrated into the YouTube app, and an app redesign can roll out separately from a TV operating-system change.
What viewers could gain—and what to watch for
- Less app-hopping: A broader discovery surface could help viewers notice programs from subscriptions they otherwise seldom open.
- More prominent promotion: Paid channels could be easier to find, but a busier home page may be less appealing to people who mainly want free creator videos.
- Recommendations are not access: A title may appear in a recommendation while still requiring a subscription, an additional sign-in, or a separate app.
- Commercial placement can shape discovery: A service’s prominence does not necessarily mean it is the best match for a viewer or that every available service receives equal visibility.
- Device and region differences matter: A TV app, Google TV home screen, and YouTube TV interface are distinct surfaces; services and catalogs can also vary by market and agreement.
- Compare subscription terms: Check renewal pricing after a trial, billing and cancellation terms, supported devices, video features, and whether the service’s full catalog is available through YouTube before choosing platform billing over a direct subscription.
What YouTube TV’s separate redesign tells us
YouTube has independently changed the YouTube TV live-service interface. Its account of that work describes a more compact Live Guide, curated recommendations at the top of the guide, added program information, improved Library filtering and organization, and a “Catch up on your favorites” shelf. YouTube’s Live Guide and Library post concerns the live-TV service, not proof that the standard YouTube app added the Primetime Channels home-page placement.
The distinction matters because similar words—TV, guide, channels, recommendations—can refer to different products. YouTube TV’s interface changes do not establish that regular YouTube app users can browse paid Primetime programming from a redesigned home page.
