YouTube tested a prominent Android button labeled “Play something”. Tapping it reportedly started an automatically selected video in YouTube’s Shorts-style vertical player, including some regular long-form videos as well as Shorts. It was spotted in late 2024, but no reliable evidence confirms a universal rollout or permanent availability as of August 18, 2026.
What is the “Play something” FAB?
FAB means floating action button: a prominent control layered above the normal app interface. In the reported YouTube test, the button appeared near the lower-right corner of the Android app, above the bottom navigation bar.
It used a black background, white “Play something” text and a play icon. The design was more conspicuous than an icon-only shortcut and appeared on the main mobile interface before a video was actively playing. The button was reported to disappear when YouTube’s miniplayer was active.
9to5Google documented the test in December 2024, including an observation in YouTube for Android version 19.50: 9to5Google’s report.

What happens when you tap it?
- You tap Play something on the Android home interface.
- YouTube immediately starts a video rather than opening a list of choices.
- The video opens in a Shorts-style, portrait-oriented player.
- The selected item may be a Short or a conventional long-form YouTube video.
- The player presents large Like, Dislike, Comment and Share controls, with a timeline scrubber reported for videos that support ordinary seeking.
That last point matters: opening in the Shorts player does not mean the selected video is necessarily a Short. Reports from Gadgets 360 and 9to5Google said regular videos could also appear in the same vertical interface.
Is it really random?
Some headlines call the result a “random” video, but the available evidence does not establish mathematically random playback. Other coverage describes an automatically chosen or recommended video, with the selection presumably influenced by viewing history or preferences.
The safer description is automatic, recommendation-based selection. YouTube did not publish the ranking logic in the reports, so it is not known which signals—such as watch history, subscriptions, language, location or recent activity—would determine the first video.

- Random playback: any eligible video could be chosen without regard to the viewer.
- Recommendation shortcut: YouTube removes the browsing decision while still selecting content for that viewer.
The reporting supports the second description more strongly than the first. Neowin’s coverage discusses preference-based selection, but this remains a reported or inferred behavior rather than a documented YouTube specification: Neowin.
Where was the button shown?
Reports placed the FAB in the bottom-right area of YouTube’s Android interface, above the bottom navigation bar. It was described as a control for the pre-playback screen, not a permanent overlay across every player state. With the miniplayer open, the button could be hidden by design.
That explains one likely source of confusion: a user might see the control, open or minimize a video, and then assume it has been removed when YouTube is simply suppressing it in that context.

Which Android version supports it?
The test was observed in YouTube Android version 19.50. That is the app build in which the experiment was seen, not an activation requirement. Installing or sideloading version 19.50 does not establish that the button will appear.

The reports do not identify an official toggle, Labs enrollment route, country list, account requirement or guaranteed activation procedure. A later article suggested version 19.50 or newer, but it did not provide an official release note or independent proof that updating enables the FAB.
Can you turn it on manually?
No reliable user-facing switch has been documented. The evidence points to selective enablement by YouTube, so people who do not see the control should not assume that their phone is incompatible.

If you want to check for the experiment, use this limited, safe checklist:
- Update YouTube through Google Play.
- Open the Home screen with any active miniplayer closed.
- Look above the bottom navigation bar for the black Play something button.
- If it is absent, treat that as an eligibility or rollout difference—not proof of a device fault.
There is no verified reason to expect that clearing the cache, joining a beta program, buying YouTube Premium or installing an unofficial APK will activate it. Sideloading an APK also introduces security, compatibility and rollback risks, while the reported behavior may be controlled remotely anyway.
Is the feature still available in 2026?
The strongest reports date from December 26–27, 2024 and describe a test rather than an announced product. A July 2026 article revisited the subject but largely repeated the earlier observations; it did not independently verify a broad rollout, an official announcement or current behavior.

As of August 18, 2026, the accurate status is therefore: an Android YouTube experiment whose universal availability and final disposition remain unverified. It is not supported to say that Google released it to everyone, and there is no reliable evidence that Google canceled it.

The apparent product goal is to reduce choice paralysis: instead of browsing until something looks appealing, the viewer delegates the first decision to YouTube. That is an interpretation of the design, not an official Google explanation. Android Authority places this test alongside earlier iterations of the idea: Android Authority.
Why put long-form videos in the Shorts player?
The interface behavior is reported; YouTube’s rationale is not. Several explanations are plausible:
- A portrait player creates a quick, swipeable discovery flow after the first tap.
- Like, Dislike, Comment, Share and next-video interactions stay immediately available.
- A continuous vertical experience may encourage viewers to keep watching after the initial selection.
- A normal landscape video shown vertically can leave unused space or black bars, producing a less natural viewing experience.
These are design inferences, not evidence that YouTube is definitively trying to increase Shorts watch time.
Earlier versions of the idea
The concept appears to predate the late-2024 FAB. Android Authority reported that a Reddit user saw a “Play something” banner in May 2023, while Android Police reportedly observed a related floating button in November 2023 without the same wording. The late-2024 sighting combined the explicit label with a more prominent floating-button treatment.
Those sightings show that YouTube revisited the concept, but they do not demonstrate continuous development or predict a release.
Benefits and drawbacks of the experiment
Potential benefits
- Fewer taps between opening YouTube and watching a video.
- A useful escape from an empty “what should I watch?” moment.
- Exposure to videos outside the viewer’s immediate subscription list.
- A familiar play action instead of several navigation steps.
Potential drawbacks
- The viewer gives up control over the initial selection.
- Calling the result “random” can set the wrong expectation if recommendations are highly personalized.
- Long-form videos may feel awkward in a portrait-first player.
- The prominent button could compete with other controls or obscure interface content.
- Automatic playback can consume mobile data or begin unwanted viewing.
- Recommendation systems may reinforce existing habits rather than broaden them.
What to use instead if you want low-effort discovery
- Use the existing Shorts feed for swipe-based, personalized discovery.
- Start a Home-feed video and let standard autoplay continue.
- Search broadly by a topic, genre or activity rather than a precise title.
- Use Subscriptions or Watch Later when you want more control over the queue.
- Use voice commands where supported. Google’s Android Assistant documentation describes separate media commands, including requests to play content by an artist; that is not the same as YouTube’s in-app FAB: Google Android Assistant documentation.
Bottom line
YouTube’s “Play something” FAB was a notable Android discovery experiment: one tap could start an automatically selected video, and the reported player could contain regular YouTube videos as well as Shorts. Its late-2024 test status, uncertain recommendation logic and unverified 2026 rollout mean it should be treated as an interesting interface trial—not a dependable feature that every Android user can enable.
