YouTube’s Jump ahead is a YouTube Premium playback shortcut that uses AI and aggregate viewer behavior to suggest a point many people commonly fast-forward to. It can help you move past long introductions, repeated explanations, or frequently skipped sections—but it is not a universal ad skipper, sponsor blocker, or chapter replacement.
What is YouTube Jump ahead?
Jump ahead adds an intelligent suggestion to YouTube’s normal fast-forward controls. Instead of moving forward by a fixed interval, such as 10 seconds, it can take you to a data-selected point that YouTube believes viewers commonly skip to.
YouTube says the feature combines AI with viewership data, including the points at which users frequently fast-forward. That means it reflects aggregate viewing behavior rather than a guaranteed understanding of a video’s structure or meaning. A suggested point might come after an introduction, a repeated explanation, or an in-video promotion, but YouTube does not promise that it will identify every section viewers consider skippable.
YouTube first announced Jump ahead on June 27, 2024, initially for YouTube Premium subscribers in the United States using Android. The company said iOS support was planned for the following weeks. In January 2025, YouTube announced an expansion to web browsers. Its current Premium benefits documentation also lists computers, smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles, although the control does not appear for every video.

How to use Jump ahead
On a computer
YouTube’s current help documentation lists several ways to reach the feature on a computer:
- Double-click the right side of the video to fast-forward.
- Hover over the progress bar and look for the Jump ahead suggestion.
- Use Option + Right Arrow on macOS.
- Use Ctrl + Right Arrow on Windows.
Keyboard behavior can vary with browser focus, keyboard layout, and whether the player is active. If the shortcut does nothing, click the video player once and try again.

On Android and iPhone
The original rollout documented Jump ahead on Android for U.S. Premium users. YouTube subsequently expanded the feature beyond its initial mobile launch, but its current general benefits page does not provide a complete device-by-device mobile availability table. In practice, availability can depend on the YouTube app version, account, country, and video.
On a supported mobile video, begin a normal forward gesture—typically by double-tapping the right side of the player. If YouTube has identified a likely skip point, a Jump ahead button or equivalent prompt may appear. Select it to move playback to the suggested position.
On smart TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles
The television interface may not show the same large button used on mobile or desktop. YouTube documents this sequence:
- Press the remote’s Right Arrow.
- Look for a dot on the progress bar marking a commonly skipped point.
- Press Right Arrow again to move toward that point.
- Press Enter or OK to confirm.
The exact appearance may differ between television brands, streaming hardware, and console apps.

Which videos support it?
Jump ahead is available only on some videos. YouTube’s current help page lists support for content in these languages:
Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai, and Turkish.
YouTube also lists the following exclusions:
- Shorts
- Premieres
- Live streams
- Music
- Movies
- Shows
Catalog classifications can affect whether a video is treated as a movie, show, music video, or another supported type. Even an eligible long-form video may not display Jump ahead if YouTube has not identified a sufficiently clear skip pattern.
New uploads may also be less likely to have a useful suggestion because the feature depends on accumulated viewing behavior. YouTube has not published a minimum number of views or a specific waiting period, so this should be treated as a likely limitation rather than a documented threshold.

Why don’t I see the Jump ahead button?
The absence of the control does not necessarily indicate a problem. Common explanations include:
- You are not using YouTube Premium. Jump ahead is documented as a Premium benefit, not a standard free YouTube feature.
- The video is excluded. Shorts, Premieres, live streams, music, movies, and shows are among the listed restrictions.
- The language is not currently covered. YouTube lists 12 supported languages.
- There is no recognized skip point. Viewer behavior may not produce a strong enough signal.
- The video is new. There may not yet be enough aggregate viewing behavior to generate a useful target.
- Your device or app has different availability. Rollouts can vary by country, account, application version, and hardware.
- You are expecting the wrong interface. TVs may show a progress-bar dot rather than a prominent button.
Updating the official YouTube app, confirming that the correct Premium account is signed in, and trying an eligible long-form video are sensible first checks. YouTube does not identify a creator-facing setting that lets creators edit, disable, or opt out of Jump ahead.

Does Jump ahead skip advertisements or sponsors?
Not reliably. YouTube Premium’s ad-free benefit and Jump ahead are separate features.

A creator-read sponsorship, meanwhile, is part of the uploaded video itself. If many viewers fast-forward over that sponsor segment, Jump ahead may sometimes suggest a point after it. But YouTube does not describe the feature as sponsor detection or guarantee that it will remove creator promotions.
The practical distinction is:
- YouTube Premium: removes eligible platform-served ads from the viewing experience.
- Jump ahead: may suggest a commonly skipped point inside the video.
- Creator sponsorships: remain part of the video and may or may not be bypassed.
- Third-party sponsor tools: use separate community-submitted timestamps and are not the same system.
Jump ahead should therefore be viewed as a convenience shortcut, not a guaranteed way to skip advertising or sponsorship disclosures.
Jump ahead versus chapters, fast-forwarding, and SponsorBlock

Chapters may be more useful when you want a specific segment, such as a particular subject in a documentary or interview. Jump ahead is more convenient when you simply want to get past a section that many previous viewers skipped.

Jump ahead is probabilistic. The most common skip point is not necessarily the right point for every viewer.
For example, viewers may fast-forward because they are searching for a particular moment, because they already watched an earlier section, or because they are following a different viewing goal. The suggested position could land mid-sentence, after an important qualification, or before the context you needed. A video’s structure may also change, or the audience’s reasons for skipping may vary.
For documentaries, lectures, investigations, and long interviews, skipping an opening section can remove background that becomes important later. Treat the suggestion as a fast route to a likely point of interest—not as an editorial judgment that the skipped material is unimportant.

Is YouTube Premium worth paying for Jump ahead?
Jump ahead alone is unlikely to justify a recurring subscription for occasional viewers. It is most compelling as one part of the broader YouTube Premium bundle, which includes benefits such as ad-free viewing, background play, offline downloads, and YouTube Music, subject to plan and market availability.
It may be worthwhile if you watch long YouTube videos frequently, already value Premium’s other benefits, and often spend time scrubbing through interviews, tutorials, reviews, podcasts, or lectures. It is a weaker reason to subscribe if you mostly watch Shorts, live streams, music, movies, or shows, or if you only want to skip an introduction occasionally.
For U.S. readers, reported prices after a 2026 increase were $15.99 per month for an individual plan and $26.99 per month for a family plan. These are dated U.S. price reports, not global rates. YouTube says plan availability and eligibility vary by market, and the amount shown at checkout may differ depending on the country, billing channel, or account.
Check YouTube’s official membership and plan information before subscribing. Apple and other third-party billing channels may display different prices.
Alternatives to Jump ahead
Use chapters and manual scrubbing
Creator-provided chapters, the progress bar, transcript search where available, and normal fast-forward controls are free alternatives. They require more manual effort but can be more precise than an automatically selected skip point.
Use a browser with ad-blocking features
Brave’s built-in Shields can block many conventional web advertisements and tracking elements, but Brave does not provide YouTube’s Jump ahead feature and is not an official Premium replacement. Playback, casting, account behavior, mobile support, and compatibility with YouTube’s official app ecosystem can differ.

The bottom line
YouTube’s Jump ahead is best understood as an AI-assisted, behavior-based fast-forward suggestion. It can save time on long videos when many viewers have skipped the same section, and its TV progress-bar marker is especially useful when scrubbing with a remote is awkward. But it is conditional: it requires Premium, does not appear on every video, has language and content restrictions, and does not guarantee ad or sponsor removal.
