Yes, the offer was real for some subscribers—but it was neither universal nor permanent. Reports published on December 13, 2024 said selected YouTube TV customers saw a six-month extension at the then-current $72.99-per-month base rate while entering the cancellation flow. The regular base price later became $82.99 plus tax, applying to the first billing cycle on or after January 13, 2025. The offer should therefore be treated as a historical, account-specific retention test rather than a standing price guarantee.
What YouTube TV reportedly offered
According to 9to5Google’s December 13, 2024 report, some existing subscribers were offered six months at $72.99 per month before the announced increase. The prompt appeared as a retention incentive during cancellation, after YouTube TV presented pause and cancellation choices.
The reporting was based on user experiences and screenshots rather than a published YouTube TV policy. Not every account displayed the offer, and no formal eligibility rules were established. It may have been account-specific, part of a limited test, or affected by a customer’s cancellation behavior.
How subscribers reportedly found it
The reported route used a desktop web browser:
- Sign in to YouTube TV.
- Open the profile menu and choose Settings.
- Open Membership, then select Manage.
- Start the cancellation process.
- Review any retention offer shown before confirming cancellation.
YouTube TV’s official instructions confirm the general web path—profile photo → Settings → Membership → Manage → Cancel membership → Cancel—but do not document the six-month offer itself. See YouTube TV’s cancellation and pause help page.

The contemporary report said the incentive appeared on the desktop site rather than in the mobile apps. That was an observation about the 2024 rollout, not a permanent interface rule. Beginning cancellation never guaranteed that an offer would appear; an account might not qualify, the test might have ended, or the interface might have changed.
When the price changed
YouTube TV’s base rate moved from $72.99 to $82.99 per month, a $10 increase before tax. Google’s YouTube TV community announcement said the new price applied to the customer’s first bill on or after January 13, 2025 (billing-timing discussion). Because billing dates differ, customers did not necessarily see the change on the same calendar day.

The official billing page now lists the main plan at $82.99 plus tax (YouTube TV billing information). That listed base price does not determine every customer’s final bill.
How much the reported offer was worth
Under the simplest assumption—six full months that would otherwise have been billed at $82.99—the base-price difference was $10 × 6, or up to approximately $60 before tax. Actual savings could differ because of billing-cycle timing, taxes, add-ons, promotional credits, or a subscriber’s existing rate.

Price lock versus YouTube TV’s normal pause option
| Feature | Reported price-lock offer | Standard pause |
|---|---|---|
| Service access | Apparently continued during the discounted period | Suspended while paused |
| Price | Reportedly kept the old $72.99 base rate for six months | Membership resumes at the applicable normal rate |
| Availability | Account-specific reports; not universal | Official account feature |
| Duration | Six months, according to the 2024 report | Four weeks to six months, according to YouTube TV’s help page |
| Documentation | Secondary reporting and user evidence | Official YouTube TV guidance |
A pause is not a price lock. YouTube TV says a paused membership automatically resumes at the normal monthly price when the pause ends. Recordings remain subject to its retention rules, and after cancellation recorded programs may expire after 21 days. The same help page warns that returning customers may not receive promotional pricing or retain prior recordings: official cancellation and pause details.
Why your bill may not match the advertised rate
- Taxes: The $82.99 figure is before applicable state, county, or local streaming taxes.
- Add-ons: Sports packages, HBO Max, 4K-related extras, and other optional services raise the total.
- Promotional pricing: A customer paying less than $72.99 may have a separate promotion. A Product Expert response in the YouTube TV community said promotional pricing could continue until its own expiration, after which the applicable regular rate would apply; this is guidance from a community responder, not a universal company policy (community discussion).
- Third-party billing: Customers who subscribed through a mobile carrier or internet provider may be billed by that provider and see different controls or timing.
Is the six-month offer still available?
There is no verified evidence here that the December 2024 incentive remains active in 2026. The documented event was a limited retention test, while current official help information lists the regular plan at $82.99 plus tax. Treat any offer displayed on your own account as account-specific and read its expiration terms before accepting it.

How to decide whether to stay, pause, or cancel
Before changing membership, check the exact terms shown in your account and compare the complete cost—not just the headline rate.
- Confirm how many discounted billing cycles remain and the date the regular rate returns.
- Check whether taxes and every add-on continue at their existing prices.
- Decide whether your household needs local broadcast channels, sports coverage, cloud DVR, profiles, or simultaneous streams.
- If you pause, remember that viewing is suspended and the membership resumes at the normal applicable price.
- If you cancel, note the end of access for the current payment period and the recording consequences described by YouTube TV.
- For a replacement, verify local affiliates, regional sports availability, DVR limits, stream limits, required add-ons, taxes, and whether an antenna or separate on-demand subscription is needed.
Potential replacements to investigate
Current prices and channel lineups change, so verify them directly before switching. Official starting points include Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, DIRECTV STREAM, and Philo. Each serves a different mix of local channels, sports, entertainment networks, DVR features, and add-ons; none should be judged by base price alone.

The Bottom Line
The reported YouTube TV price lock was a selective six-month retention offer at $72.99 before the January 2025 increase—not a permanent guarantee. The normal base plan is now listed at $82.99 plus tax, and only an offer explicitly shown on your account can establish what you currently qualify for.
