For most U.S. households replacing cable, YouTube TV is the stronger all-around choice: its main plan bundles 100+ channels, local stations where available, unlimited DVR, six household accounts and three simultaneous streams. Sling TV is the better value when you know which channels you need and want to keep the bill lower—but its local coverage and plan features vary more.
The deciding test is not the headline channel count. Check your local stations, the specific sports and entertainment channels you watch, and the total cost after DVR and add-ons. The prices below reflect plan information shown on official pages on August 18, 2026; offers and lineups can change.
YouTube TV and Sling TV at a glance
YouTube TV sells a broad, conventional live-TV bundle. Sling is modular: choose a base plan, then add channels or features. The services are not direct equivalents at their cheapest advertised prices, so compare the plan that actually includes your must-have channels.
| Plan or feature | Price shown Aug. 18, 2026 | Channels | Simultaneous streams | DVR |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV main plan | $82.99/month regular price | 100+ | 3 | Unlimited |
| YouTube TV Sports Plan | $64.99/month regular price | 30+ sports-focused channels | 3 | Unlimited |
| Sling Essentials | $19.99/month | 10+ | 1 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
| Sling Select | From $19.99/month | 10+ | 3 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
| Sling Essentials & Select | From $34.99/month | 15+ | Up to 4 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
| Sling Orange | From $45.99/month | 30+ | 1 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
| Sling Blue | From $45.99/month | 40+ | 3 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
| Sling Orange & Blue | From $60.99/month | 50+ | Up to 4 | 50 hours included; unlimited is extra |
Plan prices, channel counts, and stream allowances are the figures listed on the providers’ official plan pages; availability and lineup details may depend on location. See YouTube TV’s current plan and signup page and Sling’s plan comparison before subscribing.

Which service is better value after add-ons?
YouTube TV: higher price, fewer package decisions
YouTube TV’s main plan was listed at $82.99 per month after its introductory offer. The official page showed an offer of $67.99 per month for the first three months for eligible customers, ending August 26, 2026. Its Sports Plan was listed at $64.99 per month, with a displayed introductory offer of $54.99 per month for the first year. These are time-limited offers, not the ongoing price; check eligibility and terms on the official signup page.
Sling: start with the channels you want, then total the extras
Sling’s lower starting prices can be compelling if a narrow package fits. But Sling includes 50 hours of DVR; its Unlimited DVR upgrade costs $5 per month. Sports, news and entertainment packs, premium subscriptions, and a separate way to receive local stations can add to the bill. For example, Orange & Blue at $60.99 plus Unlimited DVR at $5 comes to about $65.99 per month before other extras. That remains below YouTube TV’s main-plan price, but the channel lineups and local coverage are not identical. See Sling’s add-ons and DVR details.
Sling also lists three-month prepay offers. Treat the discounted initial outlay as temporary: compare the price and terms that apply afterward, not only the prepaid period. Taxes, add-ons, premium subscriptions and market-specific availability can affect the final bill. Current offers and plan terms are on Sling’s prepay page.

Local channels can decide the comparison
YouTube TV is built as a broad national-and-local package, but local station availability depends on your ZIP code. Sling’s local availability is more limited and market-dependent; its plan comparison identifies selected FOX and NBC availability, not a guarantee of all major networks everywhere. If you require dependable CBS or all four major broadcast networks—ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC—verify each station before choosing. Do not assume either service carries every local affiliate in your area.

- Enter your ZIP code on YouTube TV’s official page and check the local lineup.
- Check the market and plan details in Sling’s plan comparison.
- If Sling lacks a station, price an over-the-air antenna and, if needed, installation before deciding that Sling is cheaper overall.
Channel counts are a poor substitute for this check: a large lineup is not useful if it omits the local affiliate or specialty channel you need.
Which is better for sports?
YouTube TV suits broad sports viewing
The main plan combines sports channels with local networks where available, while the separate Sports Plan offers 30+ sports-focused channels at its listed price. YouTube TV also promotes Multiview, which can show up to four games at once, and offers NFL Sunday Ticket as an add-on. Feature availability and the channels or events included can vary; review YouTube TV’s live-sports information and its Sports Plan and sports-feature details.

Sling can target ESPN and selected sports at a lower price
Sling Orange is positioned around sports and family programming and includes ESPN-family access; Blue is oriented more toward news and entertainment. Sports Extra and other add-ons can expand a lineup, but the exact channels depend on the base plan. Orange permits one simultaneous stream, which matters if other people in the home want to watch different programs. Check the current lineup on Sling’s comparison page and add-ons page.
- NFL: Local in-market games depend on access to the relevant local network. Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games require NFL Sunday Ticket or another appropriate option; a live-TV subscription alone does not guarantee them.
- College sports: Confirm that the conference network or event channel you need is in the specific plan or add-on.
- Regional sports: Availability varies by market and can change. Check the channel for your ZIP code rather than assuming either service carries it.
- Multiple games: YouTube TV’s Multiview is a notable option for simultaneous viewing, though supported content and availability can vary.
Sports verdict: YouTube TV is the better fit for broad household sports coverage, local games, DVR and Multiview. Sling Orange or Orange & Blue can cost less for viewers focused on selected ESPN or sports channels, while YouTube TV’s Sports Plan is worth comparing if you want a sports-focused package rather than the full main plan.

DVR and streams: match the plan to your household
| Feature | YouTube TV | Sling TV |
|---|---|---|
| Included DVR | Unlimited cloud DVR | 50 hours |
| Unlimited DVR | Included | $5/month add-on |
| Accounts and streams | Six household accounts; 3 simultaneous streams | Essentials: 1; Select: 3; Essentials & Select: up to 4; Orange: 1; Blue: 3; Orange & Blue: up to 4 |
YouTube TV’s account and DVR features are useful when several people record different programs. Sling’s included DVR may suit occasional recording, but frequent recording of sports, series and films can make the paid unlimited upgrade more relevant. Neither service’s cloud DVR should be treated as a promise that every program remains available forever: network rights can affect recording and playback, and advertisements may still appear depending on the content version.

- One person, one screen: Orange’s single stream may be enough if its channels fit; Essentials also has one stream.
- Two or more viewers: Orange alone can be restrictive. Blue, Select, Orange & Blue or YouTube TV provide more concurrent viewing under the listed allowances.

Will the apps work on your smart TV?
Compatibility depends on the TV’s exact model, operating system and age. YouTube TV lists support for select Samsung and LG smart TVs from 2017 onward, as well as Roku TVs, Vizio SmartCast TVs, certain Hisense and Fire TV Edition models, Android TV devices, Apple TV, Chromecast-related platforms, PlayStation and Xbox consoles. These brand and year descriptions are not a guarantee for every model. Check YouTube TV’s supported device list before signing up.
Sling says it supports more than 20 device categories, including smart TVs, streaming players, computers and mobile devices. Check its current device and service information at Sling’s site and Sling’s device and premium-service page.

There is not enough basis here to call one app universally faster or easier to use across every TV. YouTube TV’s product emphasizes a broad live-TV bundle, accounts, DVR and sports features; Sling emphasizes choosing a base package and building it out. App behavior can differ by TV platform, and a hands-on comparison would be needed to rank performance.
Best choice by viewer type
| If you want… | Start with… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A broad cable replacement | YouTube TV main plan | 100+ channels, local stations where available, unlimited DVR and six household accounts. |
| The lowest bill for a narrow channel list | Sling Essentials, Select, Orange or Blue, depending on channels | Lower entry prices; confirm the lineup, stream allowance and any needed extras. |
| A family plan with heavy recording | YouTube TV | Unlimited DVR and six household accounts. |
| Selected ESPN channels at a lower cost | Sling Orange or Orange & Blue | Sports-oriented lineup; Orange is limited to one stream. |
| News and entertainment channels | Sling Blue, if its lineup matches | Three streams and a lower listed price than YouTube TV’s main plan. |
| Watching several games at once | YouTube TV | Multiview can show up to four games, subject to availability and supported content. |
| Local broadcast channels above all | Check YouTube TV first, then compare an antenna | Local coverage is ZIP-code-specific; Sling’s selection is not equivalent in every market. |
A low-cost Sling package is not automatically a smaller version of YouTube TV: Essentials and Select have narrower lineups. Likewise, YouTube TV’s larger channel count does not guarantee that it has every specialty network a viewer wants. Make a short channel checklist, check both providers’ local lineups, then add the DVR and sports features you would actually use.
Final verdict: which service should you choose?
Choose YouTube TV if you want one broad package with local channels where available, unlimited DVR, personalized household accounts and a strong set of sports features—and are comfortable with the main plan’s $82.99 monthly regular price shown in August 2026. Choose Sling TV if your channel list is narrower, the local stations you need are available another way, and a base plan plus selected extras costs less for your household.
Before subscribing, compare your ZIP-code lineup and the full monthly total—not just a promotional price or the cheapest plan headline. Sling also offers Freestream, a free ad-supported service, but it is not a substitute for the paid live-TV packages compared here.
