YouTube TV could become the largest U.S. pay-TV provider, but it has not been confirmed as the leader. A 2024 forecast put it on track to pass Comcast by the end of 2026; a later estimate points instead to a possible crossover in 2027. Google has disclosed only that the service had more than 8 million subscribers as of May 2025, leaving the current ranking unverified.
The subscriber forecasts tell different stories
The headline traces to a 2024 forecast attributed to media analyst Michael Nathanson and MoffettNathanson: YouTube TV could reach 12.4 million paying subscribers by the end of 2026, potentially passing Comcast’s Xfinity TV and Charter’s Spectrum. That was a projection, not a reported result, and the underlying report is not reproduced in the available coverage. The 2024 report on the forecast also noted the limits of comparing subscriber counts when Google does not regularly publish a detailed figure.
A January 2026 report citing research firm Omdia offered a more modest and later path to the top:

| Charter/Spectrum | 11.4 million | 10.0 million |
| Comcast/Xfinity | 10.6 million | 9.2 million |
| YouTube TV | 9.3 million | 10.4 million |
On Omdia’s reported estimates, YouTube TV was still behind both cable operators at the end of 2025, but was forecast to pass them in 2027. Its projected lead over Charter would be relatively narrow. These are analyst estimates and forecasts reported by Cyprus Mail, not subscriber totals Google, Comcast, or Charter have jointly verified.

The two forecasts should not be blended into a single precise prediction. The 2024 estimate anticipated 12.4 million subscribers by the end of 2026; the later Omdia outlook put the service at 10.4 million in 2027. They may rely on different definitions, starting points, and assumptions. As of August 2026, neither establishes that YouTube TV has already overtaken Comcast or that it will do so in 2026.
What counts as a pay-TV subscriber?
“Largest pay-TV provider” is a ranking by paid television subscriptions—not by total viewers, video views, or the size of the YouTube platform. YouTube TV is a virtual multichannel video programming distributor, or vMVPD: it sells a bundle of live channels over the internet. Cable, satellite, and some telco television services are also part of the broader pay-TV market.
Even within that category, comparisons can be difficult. An account is not necessarily one person or one household, and analysts may differ over how they treat free trials, promotional accounts, paused subscriptions, business or bulk accounts, bundles, or subscribers who join for a sports season and later cancel. The comparison also depends on which services and distribution types a particular estimate includes.

Google’s clearest public benchmark in the supplied reporting is much less specific than the analyst totals: YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said at an investor conference on May 15, 2025, that YouTube TV had more than 8 million subscribers. The statement appears in the conference transcript; YouTube also cited the more-than-8-million milestone in its 2025 company messaging. Neither disclosure means the service had 9.3 million subscribers at the end of 2025, nor does it establish a count for August 2026. The much larger audience of YouTube overall is a separate product and business model.
Why YouTube TV is gaining ground
YouTube TV borrows the familiar idea of a live-channel bundle but delivers it through an internet connection rather than a traditional cable plant and set-top box. Customers can watch on supported televisions and streaming devices, phones, tablets, and computers. For households already accustomed to streaming, that can make a conventional lineup of live channels feel less tied to a cable installation or a long-term contract.
Sports are central to the service’s pitch. Live games give viewers a reason to keep a subscription even as they watch more on-demand video elsewhere. YouTube TV also promotes features such as multiview, Key Plays, cloud DVR, and household accounts. YouTube’s published plan details describe its main package as offering more than 100 networks, unlimited DVR storage, and up to six household members, subject to the service’s terms. YouTube’s plan announcement outlines those features.

In February 2026, YouTube announced more than 10 genre-focused plans intended to let customers choose packages built around sports, news, entertainment, and family programming. Prices reported in that announcement included a $64.99 monthly Sports Plan, with a first-year new-user price of $54.99; a $71.99 Sports + News Plan, with a new-user offer of $56.99 for the first three months; a $54.99 Entertainment Plan, with a three-month new-user price of $44.99; and a $69.99 News + Entertainment + Family Plan, with a three-month introductory price of $59.99. The main plan was listed at $82.99 a month. These are prices and promotional terms announced on February 9, 2026, not a guarantee of current or future offers. Check the official plan announcement for the terms in effect when subscribing.
Flexible packages could help reach viewers who do not want a broad bundle, but a lower starting price does not necessarily mean a better fit: a genre plan may leave out channels a household expects, and extras such as sports packages can raise the bill. The main driver of YouTube TV’s appeal is not price alone. It is the combination of live channels, sports, DVR, and streaming convenience.
Why traditional TV operators are vulnerable
YouTube TV does not need to persuade every household to become a pay-TV subscriber from scratch. It can win accounts as customers leave cable or satellite, move to broadband-only service, or look for a live bundle they can manage online. Traditional TV bills may include equipment costs, regional sports or broadcast fees, and promotional prices that rise after an introductory period. Those costs can make it harder for customers to predict what they will pay.

Meanwhile, many households are more comfortable choosing and cancelling online subscriptions than arranging an installation or maintaining a traditional television package. That shift does not mean live TV has disappeared: local news, scheduled programming, and sports still matter to some viewers. YouTube TV’s opportunity is to serve that demand in a streaming format while cable operators contend with declining video subscriptions.

Passing Comcast or Charter in subscriber count would be a notable change in the pay-TV market, but it would not by itself show that YouTube TV has the highest revenue, the strongest profits, the most viewing time, the best customer satisfaction, or the most complete rights to sports and channels. Comcast and Charter also operate large broadband businesses; a TV-subscriber ranking does not measure those businesses or the economics of each customer.
YouTube TV must also manage the high cost of programming rights, price sensitivity, and the possibility that subscribers leave after a season or event. Its channel lineup depends on agreements with networks. YouTube’s updates on negotiations with NBCUniversal, Fox, and Disney illustrate that streaming delivery does not eliminate carriage disputes. When a distributor and a media company fail to agree, channels can be at risk of interruption or removal.

What viewers should check before switching
A service’s growth or market rank cannot tell you whether it is the right choice for your home. Before changing providers, check:
- Local channels: Confirm that the ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, PBS, and other local stations you need are available in your ZIP code.
- Sports rights and blackouts: Check that the service carries the networks, regional sports networks, and league coverage you actually watch. Rights, local availability, and blackout rules vary.
- Total monthly cost: Add the base plan, sports and premium add-ons, taxes, and the broadband bill if you do not already pay for internet service. Compare that total with your cable bill after promotions, fees, and equipment charges—not just the advertised starting price.
- Connection and devices: Live streaming depends on a reliable internet connection, Wi-Fi, and compatible devices. A weak or congested connection can undermine the convenience of a cable-free setup.
- DVR and household use: Check how recordings work, what content restrictions apply, the simultaneous-stream limit, and any location rules. “Unlimited” storage does not override content rights or every service restriction.
- Price and cancellation terms: Introductory offers expire, and streaming-TV prices can change. If you subscribe for a sports season, check renewal and cancellation timing.
It is not possible to say from the available figures that YouTube TV is universally cheaper than Comcast. A fair comparison needs current, location-specific Comcast pricing and a full accounting of fees, promotions, internet, equipment, and channel needs. A service with a lower advertised base price may cost more for a particular household once required channels and add-ons are included.
YouTube TV is also not the only internet-delivered live-TV option. Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, and Sling TV offer different channel mixes and packaging approaches. Compare the channels and sports rights you need, the full cost, and the cancellation terms rather than assuming one bundle is best for everyone.

YouTube TV is a serious candidate to become the largest U.S. pay-TV provider as traditional television subscriptions fall. But the takeover remains a forecast, and the forecast itself has shifted: one 2024 estimate pointed to the end of 2026, while the later Omdia figures reported in 2026 pointed to 2027. The strongest defensible conclusion is that YouTube TV is closing the gap; its current rank and the timing of any crossover are not confirmed by a current company-reported subscriber count.
