Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said the company was ready to keep talking “as long as they want”—a statement of willingness, not evidence that a deal was imminent. The companies announced an agreement the next day, November 14, ending a blackout that had begun on October 30.
What happened, and when?
YouTube TV’s distribution agreement with Disney expired on October 30, 2025. Disney-owned channels were removed from YouTube TV while the companies negotiated new terms. The blackout lasted until the agreement announced on November 14.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| October 30, 2025 | The agreement expired and Disney channels went dark on YouTube TV. YouTube TV’s notice described the expiration and removal. |
| November 11, 2025 | YouTube TV offered eligible subscribers a one-time $20 credit while Disney content was unavailable. It was a credit, not a permanent price reduction. YouTube TV’s notice explained the offer. |
| November 13, 2025 | Talks remained unresolved. Reports described renewed momentum and greater involvement by Disney CEO Bob Iger and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. Disney CFO Hugh Johnston said Disney was prepared to continue negotiating. The November 13 report captured the status at the time. |
| November 14, 2025 | YouTube TV announced a deal with Disney and said channels and affected recordings would be restored. Local ABC stations could return shortly afterward rather than all at once nationwide. YouTube TV’s resolution notice described the restoration. |
Which channels and viewing options were affected?
The blackout affected Disney-owned television networks carried on YouTube TV, including ESPN and ABC. Contemporary reporting said more than 20 channels went dark, though local ABC availability and restoration timing could vary by market. The dispute did not mean every YouTube TV channel disappeared, nor did it remove every Disney service from every Google product.
For sports viewers, the loss of ESPN meant losing access through YouTube TV to programming including college football and other live sports. The practical impact depended on what a household watched and whether it had another way to access particular events.

Recordings, purchases and other Disney services
During the blackout, access to some recordings associated with the affected channels could be unavailable. When the deal was reached, YouTube TV said existing affected recordings, personal preferences and recommendations would remain intact. That assurance concerned YouTube TV libraries; it did not mean the blackout had no effect on viewing while channels were unavailable.
Contemporaneous reporting also discussed Disney movies and shows in Google’s purchase-and-rental ecosystem. That was a separate issue from the YouTube TV channel carriage dispute: existing purchases and rentals remained accessible, and the blackout should not be read as a blanket removal of Disney+ or every Disney title from Google services. YouTube TV’s subscriber notice addressed the separate content questions and pointed subscribers to ESPN for direct access.

Why were the negotiations difficult?
The central confirmed fact is that the parties had not reached acceptable distribution terms by the October 30 expiration. The contract itself was not publicly released, so reported details about particular fees and clauses should be treated as reporting, not verified contract language.
Programming fees and network value
Trade reporting described programming fees as a core issue. ESPN pricing was initially identified as a major point of dispute, while another account said ESPN pricing had effectively been settled by November 13 and ABC fees remained an obstacle. Those descriptions were not confirmed by a public contract. The November 13 report covered the reported fee disagreements.

Parity and distributor scale
Reports also pointed to most-favored-nation provisions: contract clauses that can link one distributor’s terms to terms offered elsewhere. The reported concern was that more favorable terms for YouTube TV could have implications for other distributors. Disney CEO Bob Iger argued on Disney’s November 13 earnings call that the proposed arrangement should reflect the value of Disney’s programming, comparing it with agreements involving larger distributors. These were negotiating positions and reported concerns, not a public account of the final contract’s terms. Disney’s earnings-call transcript records Iger’s remarks.
What each side said on November 13
Disney’s position
Disney presented its programming as valuable and said its offer was comparable to agreements with larger distributors. CFO Hugh Johnston said Disney was “ready to go as long as they want,” meaning Disney was willing to continue negotiations. The remark did not establish that Disney had accepted YouTube TV’s terms or that a deal was close. Iger and Johnston made their comments in the context of Disney’s November 13 earnings call; the transcript is the source for the company’s statements.

YouTube TV’s position
YouTube TV said it was seeking fair pricing and more flexibility for subscribers, and objected to terms it said could disadvantage its members while benefiting Disney’s own live-TV offerings. It also argued that customers should not have to pay for programming they did not want. Those are YouTube TV’s stated arguments, not independently established findings about the contract. Its subscriber-facing position appeared in its official notice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How did the $20 credit work?
YouTube TV offered a one-time $20 credit during the blackout. Billing method affected how subscribers received it: people billed through Google Play or a third party were told it would be applied automatically, while people billed directly through YouTube TV were instructed to claim it through the service. The stated redemption deadline was December 9, 2025, so this was a historical offer, not a credit available now. YouTube TV’s instructions gave the billing and claiming details.

The credit’s value was not the same for every household. A subscriber who relied on ESPN during a major sports weekend could have experienced a more significant loss than one who rarely watched Disney channels; a one-time credit did not guarantee equivalent compensation for each viewer’s experience.
What was the final outcome?
On November 14, YouTube TV announced that it had reached an agreement with Disney. The agreement was described in secondary coverage as multiyear, but the precise contract length and financial terms were not publicly established in the cited material. YouTube TV said Disney channels and affected recordings would be restored, with local ABC stations returning as quickly as possible. The announcement ended this blackout; it does not establish the terms of future negotiations. YouTube TV’s announcement described the deal and restoration, while 9to5Google’s Disney coverage described it as multiyear.
Quick Recap
What subscribers can take from the dispute
- A direct ESPN service is a partial workaround, not necessarily a full replacement. It may provide some sports programming, but channel lineups, local ABC access, DVR functions, simultaneous streams, device support and regional restrictions can differ. YouTube TV pointed subscribers to ESPN during the dispute; that did not make the services interchangeable. YouTube TV’s notice included the direct-access reference. ESPN’s service information is at ESPN.
- Changing providers does not eliminate carriage risk. Live-TV distributors negotiate with networks, so another bundle can have its own disputes, channel gaps and market-specific limitations.
- Compare what you actually watch before switching. For a sports-first household, check ESPN and local ABC access; for a broader replacement, compare the full channel lineup, DVR, regional availability and cancellation terms. Alternatives include Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM. Their prices and lineups change, so verify current details directly with each provider.
- For a future outage, check the provider’s current notice and your local listing. Network restoration and local affiliate availability may not happen simultaneously in every market; confirm the channel by ZIP code and contact the provider if a promised channel or recording remains unavailable.
