YouTube did not permanently remove SRV3/YTT captions, according to its latest cited update. In January 2026, the platform restricted uploads and playback after saying the files could cause playback failures for some viewers. On February 17, TeamYouTube said uploads had been restored and playback partially re-enabled, while warning that some highly styled captions could still be restricted on certain devices. For creators, the format is available again—but its styling and long-term compatibility should not be treated as guaranteed.
What happened to SRV3 captions?
In mid-January 2026, creators reported that new SRV3/YTT caption uploads were no longer appearing on videos. Some also said that existing stylized tracks had disappeared or stopped displaying. The reports concerned an advanced caption workflow, not every manually uploaded subtitle or all captions on YouTube.
YouTube’s stated reason was playback problems affecting some viewers. The company did not publicly specify the parser, renderer, device type, or particular styling instructions responsible. It is therefore not possible to say from the available explanation whether a given file failed because of its styling, a device-specific renderer, or another technical cause. 9to5Google reported on the January restriction and YouTube’s explanation.

On February 17, TeamYouTube said it had restored the ability to upload YTT/SRV3 captions and partially re-enabled playback. It cautioned that playback of some highly styled captions would remain restricted on certain devices, and said most creators using other upload formats were not affected. What SRV3/YTT does—and why creators used it
SRV3, also called YTT or YouTube Timed Text, is a YouTube-associated advanced timed-text format used in specialized captioning workflows. It can carry richer presentation than a basic subtitle file: color-coded speakers, changes in font and size, outlines or shadows, precise placement, and timed movement or karaoke-like effects. Depending on the workflow, it can help arrange original lyrics and translations together, identify who is speaking, or place a caption near a character or sound rather than in a fixed strip at the bottom.
That makes stylized captions more than decoration. For music, animation, VTuber streams, and multilingual video, placement and visual distinctions can help preserve timing, speaker identity, and context. They can also be important to localization teams whose translated tracks are designed to work alongside the original performance.

Coverage of the January incident identified Hololive-related videos and Caption+ workflows among examples discussed by creators. Those examples should not be read as a complete list of affected channels, or as proof that every video from any one channel lost its subtitles. PiunikaWeb collected creator reports and examples.

YouTube supports multiple caption and subtitle formats. Its documentation lists options including SRT, SBV, VTT, TTML/DFXP, and broadcast-oriented formats. These are distinct from SRV3/YTT; the January event does not establish that YouTube removed ordinary uploaded subtitle tracks, automatic captions, or creator captioning generally. YouTube’s supported-format guidance is the reference to check before preparing a new upload.

The formats are not interchangeable in what they preserve. YouTube says SRT does not carry recognized style information, WebVTT styling is limited, and TTML support is partial. Broadcast formats may suit television-style positioning and color in some workflows, but they are not a guaranteed way to reproduce every SRV3 effect. Treat SRT as a compatibility fallback, not a feature-equivalent replacement.

What creators should do now
- Keep the masters outside YouTube. Archive the original
.yttor.srv3file, its source project, translated scripts, and any style definitions or fonts you are licensed to retain. Keep language codes and track names with the files. - Make a selectable fallback. Export a conventional
.vttor.srttrack for reliable text and timing, or evaluate.ttml/.dfxpif moderate styling is important. Review the conversion: a simpler format may discard the color, placement, animation, or timing effects that gave the original track meaning. - Test the actual YouTube render. After upload, check the track on desktop and on the mobile apps or other devices important to your audience. A successful upload does not prove that captions will display correctly during playback. Compare the result with the source and check each language track separately.
- Keep languages independent. Separate language tracks are easier to review and repair than a workflow that depends on one file or one combined presentation. Verify the language code and track name when a particular export appears to be missing.
- Use burned-in text selectively. If a visual caption effect is essential to the artwork, putting it in the video image guarantees that it appears as designed. But viewers cannot turn it off or translate it independently, revisions require a new video render, and accessibility and search benefits of selectable captions are reduced. A strong compromise is to burn in essential visual text while also supplying conventional selectable captions.

yt-dlp --skip-download --write-sub --sub-lang en --sub-format srv3 VIDEO_URLReplace VIDEO_URL with the video address and adjust the language code as needed. This can fail if the track is no longer exposed, uses another language code or format, or cannot be retrieved. It does not restore captions YouTube has made unavailable. For editing and conversion, tools such as Subtitle Edit may help, but conversion should be checked for lost formatting and timing.

Choosing a workflow
- Styling is essential: Continue using SRV3/YTT only if your team can preserve independent source files and test the rendered result. Do not make it the only copy of a translation or depend on it for a visual effect that must appear on every device.
- Compatibility matters most: Use SRT or VTT for a simpler selectable track. Expect less visual control; neither is a substitute for every advanced SRV3 feature.
- You need some layout control: Evaluate TTML/DFXP or a suitable broadcast workflow, then test on YouTube. Documentation of a format’s capabilities does not guarantee that YouTube implements every feature.
- Captions are part of the video’s design: Consider a burned-in layer, while retaining a separate selectable caption track for language choice and accessibility.
YouTube encourages creators to provide subtitles for international audiences. Automatic captions can be a starting point, but they can misrecognize accents, dialects, names, lyrics, overlapping voices, or speech obscured by noise; they are not a substitute for reviewed translations. What remains uncertain
The February notice established restored upload capability and partial playback—not a full restoration audit. The available evidence does not show how many existing tracks recovered, whether every vanished track was hidden or permanently lost, or which devices and styling features remain restricted. Nor does it provide a long-term compatibility guarantee. Creators should distinguish a file that uploads from a track that reliably renders for viewers.
Viewer caption preferences—such as font, color, opacity, background, and edge style—are separate from styling authored into a creator’s SRV3 track. Changing a viewer’s settings may alter the appearance of ordinary captions, but it does not recreate a missing or unsupported authored layout.
