YouTube’s official eyes-emoji reply once sparked speculation that a Spotify Wrapped-style recap for the whole platform was coming. The hint was not a product announcement, but the broader experience has since become real: YouTube now calls it YouTube Recap. It summarizes eligible viewing across YouTube and is separate from the music-focused YouTube Music Recap.
What YouTube’s eyes emoji did—and didn’t—confirm
On December 2, 2025, coverage of an official YouTube social-media reply consisting of an eyes emoji prompted users to wonder whether the company was teasing a full-year viewing summary. The reaction made sense: people already knew YouTube Music Recap, and wanted a similar look back at everything they watched on YouTube.

At the time, though, an emoji was only a suggestive hint. It did not confirm a product name, launch date, feature list or universal availability. The speculation was reported as speculation, not as an official announcement. YouTube’s later help documentation confirms that the broader product is called YouTube Recap, rather than “YouTube Wrapped.” The original report captures the clue; YouTube’s help page establishes what the product became.

YouTube Recap is a personalized end-of-year experience generated from a user’s watch history. It can bring together interests, creators, music and notable moments from the year. YouTube says it can reflect both standard videos and Shorts, with viewing across mobile, computers and TVs counted when the user is signed in. It is not presented as a complete item-by-item ledger of every video watched.

The cards and classifications are personalized, and the exact experience can vary with factors such as activity, location and language. A screenshot from another person therefore is not a definitive catalogue of what every account will receive. The format invites sharing, but the underlying recap is specific to the signed-in account.
How to find your YouTube Recap
- Sign in to the YouTube account whose viewing history you want to see.
- Open the YouTube mobile app and check the You tab for a Recap banner, or visit youtube.com/recap in a browser.
- Open the cards to review the personalized summary. Use the available sharing controls if you want to share it.
YouTube’s instructions for the 2025 edition specified version 18.43 or newer of the YouTube app on Android and iPhone or iPad. That is an edition-specific documented requirement, not a guarantee of the minimum version for future Recaps.

YouTube Recap vs. YouTube Music Recap
YouTube had a yearly recap before the broader viewing experience arrived: YouTube Music Recap. The two products are related but distinct, and a reader looking for one in the other app may come up empty.

YouTube Music’s 2025 end-of-year guidance used a January 1–November 15, 2025 listening window. It specified at least 10 hours of music listening during that period for the end-of-year recap, and at least two hours of podcast consumption for podcast recap cards. Desktop guidance also listed repeat listens to at least five songs. These are documented rules for that Music Recap edition—not universal thresholds for general YouTube Recap or future years. Why a recap may not appear
If you cannot find a recap, first make sure you are checking the right product and signed-in account. The general Recap is in YouTube; the music-focused one is primarily in YouTube Music. YouTube’s eligibility guidance also identifies these possible reasons for a missing general Recap:
- There is not enough eligible watch history for a summary.
- Watch history was paused, or automatic deletion removed relevant activity.
- The account is below the minimum age, supervised, or being used as a delegated Brand Account user.
- The account is in a region where the experience is not available.
Cards can differ by account, location and language, so variation does not necessarily mean something is broken. If the recap is from an earlier year, do not assume it remains available indefinitely; YouTube’s documentation for the general viewer Recap does not establish a permanent archive or a universal expiry date. Check the current YouTube Recap help page for the applicable eligibility and access details.

What the original hint got right
The eyes emoji did not prove what YouTube would build, what it would be called or who would qualify. In hindsight, however, the broader idea behind the speculation—an annual summary extending beyond music—was borne out by YouTube Recap. “YouTube Wrapped” remains an informal comparison to Spotify’s format; YouTube Recap is the official name, while YouTube Music Recap remains the separate listening summary.
