Recheck YouTube’s current server URL and key, confirm whether FFmpeg is using RTMP or the recommended RTMPS address, then use the exact error to distinguish connection, SSL, authentication, and media-setting problems. An OBS success does not establish that a particular FFmpeg build supports the same protocol or command.
1. Compare the YouTube URL and stream key
YouTube treats the server URL and stream key as separate encoder settings. In YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, the URL is entered as the server and the key is copied into the encoder; the key acts as the stream’s password and address. Matching the key alone does not mean FFmpeg is using the same server or protocol as OBS.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream you intend to send.
- Copy the current stream URL and key again. Compare both values with the FFmpeg configuration and the values currently entered in OBS.
- Check whether the key was reset or has become stale. YouTube recommends updating the encoder with a new key when troubleshooting an encoder start error; see its live stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Keep the key private. Redact it from screenshots, shared commands, and public logs.
Be careful when comparing saved settings: an OBS profile may still contain an older URL or key, while FFmpeg is configured separately. Copy the current values from Live Control Room rather than assuming either client’s saved configuration is authoritative.
2. Check RTMP versus RTMPS
YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default. Deliberately obtain the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, then verify that FFmpeg is pointed at that address with the matching protocol. Do not substitute an RTMPS address by guesswork.

- SSL certificate error: YouTube advises confirming that the RTMPS URL and server are correct. If they are correct, it suggests trying port 443.
- Connection timeout: YouTube advises verifying the URL and confirming that the encoder supports RTMPS.
Those messages are clues, not definitive diagnoses: a timeout or SSL error does not, by itself, identify which setting or network condition is responsible. Follow YouTube’s specific troubleshooting advice for connection and SSL errors.
3. Inspect FFmpeg’s build, command, and exact error
OBS working does not prove that the FFmpeg executable you are running supports the same protocol or is being invoked with equivalent settings. The relevant details are the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the command with the stream key redacted, and the complete error output. Without those, it is not possible to responsibly identify a particular command-line cause or prescribe a universal FFmpeg command.

- Record the version and build information reported by the FFmpeg binary you actually run.
- Save the full output from a failed attempt, including the first connection or protocol error rather than only the final summary.
- Share the command only after replacing the key with a clear placeholder such as
[REDACTED]; do not share the live key.
Use those details to verify protocol support and syntax against documentation for that specific FFmpeg build. Until then, avoid changing several command options at once: doing so can obscure whether the failure is URL/protocol, authentication, invocation, or media output.
4. Check media settings only after connection and authentication
If FFmpeg establishes a connection but YouTube rejects, flags, or reports an unhealthy stream, compare its output against YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance. Its recommendations include RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds.

Bitrate is not a single universal target: YouTube’s guidance varies it by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Match the recommendation to the actual output mode rather than applying an isolated bitrate figure. These media checks are secondary when FFmpeg cannot connect or authenticate at all.
5. Separate FFmpeg output problems from network problems
Check FFmpeg’s local output and error log alongside the stream health shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises checking encoder errors and CPU load when local audio or video is poor. If the encoder output looks healthy, test outbound internet connectivity; if the connection test finds a problem, YouTube advises contacting the internet service provider.

- FFmpeg reports connection, protocol, or authentication trouble: return to the URL, protocol, key, and build checks before tuning media quality.
- FFmpeg connects, but audio/video is poor or flagged: inspect the local encoder output, CPU load, codecs, keyframe interval, and the matching bitrate recommendation.
- Local output appears healthy, but delivery is unstable: test outbound connectivity and use the result to determine whether to contact the ISP.
