Check your channel and role first; then have an authorized owner or manager retrieve or reset the key and update the encoder’s key and stream URL.
First identify whether this is a permissions problem or an encoder problem
YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Treat yours as a private credential: do not post it publicly or send it through an insecure channel. A permissions change may affect your ability to view or reset the key; YouTube’s guidance does not say that every role change automatically invalidates a key already stored in an encoder. - In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Permissions and confirm that you are looking at the channel that owns the stream.
- Check your role against the capabilities below. If you cannot access the key, ask an owner or manager to retrieve it or reset it.
- If you can access the key but the encoder still cannot connect, compare the encoder’s saved stream key and server/stream URL with the current values in Live Control Room.

What each YouTube channel role can do with a stream key

Retrieve or reset the key with an authorized account
- Sign in to the YouTube account with owner or manager access to the channel.
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open Stream and find the Stream key section.
- To keep using the existing key, copy the current key shown there. To replace a key, an owner or manager selects Reset beside it and copies the newly generated key. YouTube says an owner or manager is required to reset a stream key. (Manage live stream settings)
- Give the key to the encoder operator privately. A reset key must replace the old key in the encoder; resetting it in Studio alone does not update the encoder’s saved settings.
Update the encoder and verify the connection
- In the encoder’s streaming settings, paste the current YouTube stream key into its Stream Key field.
- Copy the stream URL shown in Live Control Room into the encoder’s server, stream URL, or RTMP field. Check both fields even if you only changed the key. (Create a live stream with an encoder)
- Start streaming from the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- Once the preview is present, select Go live in YouTube if the stream is not already scheduled or configured to publish automatically. Connecting the encoder and publishing the stream are separate steps.

Check RTMPS separately if the encoder reports a transport error
For an RTMPS connection, copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and confirm that your encoder supports RTMPS. The URL displayed by default may be RTMP, so do not assume the two addresses are interchangeable. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance identifies port 443 as an SSL-error workaround; use the URL and connection details shown for your stream. (Encrypt your stream using RTMPS)

If Studio will not let the channel go live
Livestream eligibility is a separate issue from key permissions. YouTube lists channel verification and having no livestreaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days among its requirements. Check eligibility if Studio will not allow the channel to start a live stream; do not assume that a role change caused an eligibility restriction. See Get started with live streaming.
Common symptoms and what to do
- The key is not visible: Verify the channel and role in Studio → Settings → Permissions. Viewers cannot see the key; ask an owner or manager to retrieve it.
- You can see the key but cannot reset it: Editors cannot reset keys. Have an owner or manager perform the reset, then securely pass the replacement to the encoder operator.
- The key was reset, but the encoder still fails: Replace the key saved in the encoder, and verify its stream URL/server field against Live Control Room.
- The encoder reports an SSL or RTMPS error: Check that it supports RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room, and consult YouTube’s port 443 guidance.
- No owner or manager can access the channel: The key reset flow requires an owner or manager. The available YouTube guidance does not establish a guaranteed recovery route for a channel with no accessible authorized user; an authorized owner or manager must regain access before this reset can be completed.
YouTube’s published guidance does not specify how long a permissions change takes to propagate. Do not assume a particular wait time or that changing computers or encoders will restore access.
