To add a station-identification announcement to a YouTube radio stream, put a recorded audio clip into the audio mix sent to YouTube. For an occasional announcement, add the clip as an OBS Media Source and trigger it during a break. For clock-timed recurring IDs, use radio playout or broadcast automation, or include the announcement in a pre-produced program asset; do not assume YouTube or OBS automatically schedules it.
What the announcement needs to do
A station ID has to be audible in the stream’s audio path. A logo or other visual overlay does not create a spoken announcement. If you already have a suitable recording, you do not need a microphone or new hardware to insert it.
If you need to record a new clip, confirm the wording and timing required for your station’s license and jurisdiction before recording. Requirements are not universal: for example, U.S. broadcast stations covered by 47 CFR § 73.1201 must identify at the beginning and end of each period of operation and hourly, as close to the hour as feasible, at a natural break in programming. The regulation specifies call letters immediately followed by the licensed community or communities, subject to permitted insertions. This is a U.S. broadcast-station rule, not a finding that every internet-only YouTube channel is subject to it. Read 47 CFR § 73.1201 and confirm applicability with the relevant regulator or licensing authority.
Add a recorded ID in OBS
- Prepare the clip. Record the announcement, then export it in a supported audio format such as MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV. OBS documents those formats for Media Sources. OBS Media Sources documentation
- Add it to the stream scene. In OBS, open the scene used for the YouTube stream. In the Sources panel, select +, choose Media Source, name it, and select the audio file. If the file should begin from the start each time it is activated, enable Restart playback when source becomes active.
- Check its audio routing. Make sure the source is included in the audio mix sent to the stream. Use the OBS audio mixer to confirm it is not muted, and set its level so the announcement is intelligible alongside the program.
- Trigger it at the break. Activate the source when the announcement should play. This manual method is suitable for occasional IDs, but it depends on someone being present to trigger playback at the right time.
- Monitor the outgoing audio. Listen to the stream output or a monitoring feed to confirm the clip is audible and does not unintentionally overlap the program.
YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, a workflow suited to setups that combine sources such as microphones and preamps. Its live-stream guidance does not state that every YouTube radio stream must carry a station ID. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

Choose manual playback, scheduled playout, or a prepared program

Choose based on how precise the timing needs to be, whether you already use playout automation, how much of the program is pre-produced, and whether a local computer can stay active. No one method fits every station.
Keep copyright and stream continuity in view
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that remains in the stream, it may temporarily interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Troubleshooting
- The ID does not play: Confirm the Media Source points to the correct file, is active in the current scene, and is not muted in the OBS audio mixer.
- The clip starts partway through: Enable Restart playback when source becomes active so activation restarts playback from the beginning.
- The announcement is missing from the YouTube stream: Check that the source is routed into the stream’s audio mix, not just added visually to the scene.
- The announcement overlaps the program: Trigger it at a natural break or use a playout workflow that can schedule the ID in the intended position. Confirm the timing by monitoring the outgoing audio.
- A scheduled ID fails to fire: Check the schedule and audio routing in the chosen playout system, then verify how its output reaches OBS. Do not rely on a YouTube integration unless that specific system documents it.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast: Check for third-party content and confirm both that you have the necessary rights and, where relevant, that the rights holder has allowlisted your channel.
