A Google password change does not, by itself, establish why a YouTube stream key stopped working. First retrieve the current key in YouTube Studio and replace the saved key in your encoder. If it still fails, reset the key and update the encoder again. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address,” but its help guidance does not say a Google Account password change automatically invalidates one. (YouTube Help)
Fix the stream key in YouTube Studio
- Check the account and channel. Sign in to the Google Account and YouTube channel you intend to stream from. A different channel can have a different stream key.
- Open the Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then select Stream. Find the stream key and copy its current value. (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)
- Update the encoder. Paste the copied key into the encoder’s stream-key field and save or apply the change. If the encoder is running, stop the attempt, update the field, then start a fresh stream connection.
- Check the server separately. YouTube’s setup instructions treat the stream URL/server and stream key as separate encoder fields. Confirm that the encoder’s server field contains the intended URL and that the key is in the key field; do not paste one into the other. (YouTube Help)
Use the current value shown in Live Control Room rather than relying on a key saved in an old encoder profile or notes. A key allows the encoder to send a feed to YouTube, so treat it as sensitive and do not share it publicly.
Reset the key if the current one still fails
- In Live Control Room, locate the hidden stream key.
- Select Reset next to it.
- Copy the newly generated key and replace the saved key in the encoder.
- Reconnect the encoder using the new key.
Only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. YouTube’s exact guidance is: “You must be a channel owner or manager to reset a stream key.” (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings) Resetting makes the old key unsuitable for the encoder connection, so update any other encoder profile or device that was using it.
If your streaming app signs in to YouTube directly
Some applications connect by signing in to your YouTube account instead of asking for a stream key. In that case, there may be no key field to replace. YouTube advises contacting the software provider; the application may need an update to work with YouTube Live. (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream)

If the new key does not get you live
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions during the prior 90 days. (YouTube Help: YouTube live streaming tips)
- Update and inspect the encoder. YouTube recommends using the latest encoder version. Check its connection or stream-health indicators for errors rather than assuming every connection failure is a key problem. (YouTube Help)
- Check the outbound connection. If the encoder reports connection trouble, investigate whether the computer or network can send the stream reliably to YouTube. YouTube includes outbound connection checks in its troubleshooting guidance. (YouTube Help)
- Recheck the exact key-server pairing. Confirm that the intended key and server URL are in their separate fields, then reconnect. If you reset the key, make sure the encoder is no longer using the previous saved value.
