Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose 60 fps when smooth motion matters and your upload connection can reliably carry the higher recommended bitrate for your resolution and codec. Choose 30 fps for relatively static scenes or when bandwidth is constrained. YouTube’s recommendations are not a guarantee that 60 fps will look better in every stream: they vary by resolution and codec, and YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers. The figures below are YouTube’s current live-ingestion recommendations, retrieved in 2026.
What changes when you stream at 30 fps or 60 fps?
Frame rate is the number of images sent each second. At 60 fps, the stream carries twice as many temporal samples per second as at 30 fps. That can make fast movement—such as gameplay, sports, or a moving camera—appear smoother. For a mostly static documentary discussion, presentation, or screen share, 30 fps may be a practical choice.
Frame rate alone does not determine image quality. Resolution and codec matter too, and the bitrate must be sufficient for the chosen combination. YouTube’s published recommendations do not quantify a guaranteed perceptual improvement from 60 fps at a fixed bitrate.
YouTube Live bitrate recommendations by resolution and codec
The table shows YouTube Help’s recommended live-ingestion bitrates in Mbps. “Minimum” and “recommended” are the labels used for the respective codec groups in YouTube’s guidance; these are not universal thresholds for perceived quality. Select the row for your resolution and frame rate, then use the column for your encoder’s codec.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2160p (4K) at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 2160p (4K) at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 15 Mbps | 7 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 0.3 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
For example, at 1080p YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264 at 30 fps; at 60 fps, its recommendations are 12 Mbps and 17 Mbps, respectively. At 720p, its recommended figures are the same at 30 and 60 fps: 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 8 Mbps for H.264. So “60 fps always needs more bitrate” is too broad; check the exact resolution and codec in the table.
These are encoder-to-YouTube ingest settings, not a promise about the bitrate each viewer receives. YouTube says it transcodes incoming live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions.

How to decide between 30 fps and 60 fps
Prefer 60 fps when motion is central
For fast gameplay, sports, or frequent camera movement, 60 fps gives more temporal samples and may be preferable for smoother motion. Check the recommended bitrate for your specific resolution and codec, and use this option only if your connection can sustain it reliably.
Prefer 30 fps when the scene is mostly still or bandwidth is limited
For talking heads, documentary narration, slides, or screen sharing with limited movement, 30 fps can be a reasonable choice. At some settings YouTube recommends a lower bitrate for 30 fps than for 60 fps; at 720p, its listed recommendations are equal. The table—not a blanket assumption about frame rate—should guide the comparison.

Keep the comparison like for like
To judge the tradeoff, compare the same resolution and codec at both frame rates. Changing resolution or codec at the same time makes it harder to tell whether a difference comes from frame rate or another setting.
Set the encoder and verify the connection
YouTube’s live guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, supports up to 60 fps, specifies CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not over 4 seconds). Use settings supported by your encoder and available ingest configuration.

- Choose the resolution, frame rate, and codec. Pick the combination that suits the movement in your content and the connection available to the encoder.
- Set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval. Keep the interval at or below 4 seconds, as YouTube recommends.
- Check upload capacity. Run a speed test and compare the available upload capacity with the table’s recommended bitrate. YouTube advises selecting settings reliable for your connection; it does not prescribe one universal extra-capacity percentage.
- Test representative content before the event. Include audio and movement similar to the real stream. YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Monitor the stream while live. Watch stream health and review YouTube’s messages during the event so you can respond to problems rather than assuming the configured bitrate guarantees a stable stream.
Do not use upload-video bitrate figures for a live stream
YouTube publishes separate recommendations for uploaded videos. For example, its SDR 1080p upload guidance lists 8 Mbps for standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) and 12 Mbps for high frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps). Those are upload-encoding figures, not the live-ingestion recommendations in the table above. YouTube recommends encoding an upload at the same frame rate at which it was recorded.
Common problems and what to check
The stream is unstable or YouTube reports poor stream health
- Check whether the configured bitrate exceeds what the connection can reliably sustain; run a speed test and choose a more reliable setting.
- Confirm the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate match the intended row and column in YouTube’s live table.
- Run another test with representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health and messages during the live event.
60 fps does not look smoother to viewers
- Confirm that the encoder is actually sending 60 fps and that the source contains motion captured at a suitable rate; a 60 fps setting cannot create genuine motion detail absent from the source.
- Remember that YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into viewer formats. The ingest bitrate does not guarantee that every viewer receives a particular playback bitrate or frame rate.
You are unsure which bitrate table applies
Use YouTube’s live-ingestion recommendations for a live stream, not the separate upload-video table. Match resolution, frame rate, and codec before selecting a figure.
