If YouTube rejects an FFmpeg stream key, first verify that FFmpeg is publishing to the exact current Stream URL and Stream key for the intended broadcast in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. The key and server endpoint are separate settings; a wrong URL, RTMP/RTMPS mismatch, or unsupported protocol can look like a bad key. Check those before resetting credentials or changing video settings.
Check the stream URL and key from the correct YouTube stream
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the broadcast you intend to run, then copy both its Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key identifies the feed, while the URL tells FFmpeg where to send it; using the right key with the wrong endpoint can still prevent publishing. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.
- Make sure the key belongs to this scheduled or active stream, not another broadcast.
- Remove accidental leading or trailing spaces and check that the URL and key have not been truncated.
- If you reset the key, replace the old value anywhere it is stored or used. A reset makes the previous credential unsuitable for this configuration.
- Treat a key exposed in a public log, screenshot, shell history, or support post as compromised: reset it, then update the encoder. Never publish the real key.
Check FFmpeg’s output argument and RTMP URL structure
The stream destination belongs in FFmpeg’s output argument, not its input. FFmpeg documents RTMP URLs in the form rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath]; the components matter. Compare the complete output URL with the URL supplied for the selected YouTube stream. Do not substitute a remembered server address or assume that every stream uses the same endpoint.
A conceptual command for a file input has this shape:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
ffmpeg -re -i input-file -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'RTMP_OR_RTMPS_OUTPUT_URL_FROM_YOUTUBE'
Replace the final placeholder with the destination arrangement required by the stream settings. This is a command shape, not a tested command for every input file, FFmpeg build, operating system, or account. Do not run it unchanged or include a real key in a published example. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows RTMP publishing with -f flv and an RTMP output URL.
- Check that the URL has the correct scheme, server, optional port, and publishing path, with no extra slash or whitespace.
- Keep the key in the position or field expected by the output URL arrangement; merely placing it elsewhere on the command line does not make it the publishing destination.
- Include the output muxer, commonly
-f flvfor RTMP/RTMPS publishing.
Tell RTMP and RTMPS errors apart
YouTube supports RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL and is recommended for encrypted ingestion. The RTMPS URL may need to be exposed in the Live Control Room; do not assume that changing rtmp:// to rtmps:// on a regular URL produces the right endpoint. Use the actual RTMPS URL supplied by YouTube. Its Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance has protocol and connection troubleshooting.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- SSL or certificate error: confirm that both the scheme and server match YouTube’s RTMPS values. If the URL is correct, YouTube suggests trying port 443.
- Connection timeout: confirm the endpoint, check whether the network permits outbound traffic to it, and verify that this FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol.
- Credential rejection after connection: recheck that the key is current and belongs to this stream; only then consider resetting it.
A TLS error or timeout is not, by itself, proof that the key is wrong. These symptoms can arise before YouTube receives and evaluates the credential.
Verify FFmpeg protocol support and stream compatibility
Protocol availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. Check the protocols and build configuration of the exact FFmpeg executable you are running; ffmpeg -protocols can list enabled protocols. If the command parses but the client cannot negotiate the selected protocol, that does not establish that the key is invalid. Confirm that the build supports the RTMP or RTMPS connection you chose.

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and codec. These settings matter for stream compatibility and health; they are not a reason to alter a valid key when the connection itself is failing. YouTube also describes HLS as an alternative in some cases where RTMP capabilities are insufficient.
Use the error message to choose the next check
| Symptom | Likely area to inspect first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Key or authentication rejected | Wrong stream, stale key, or key in the wrong output position | Copy the current key from the intended Live Control Room stream and verify how it is incorporated into FFmpeg’s output URL. |
| Malformed URL or immediate command error | Output URL components or missing muxer | Check server, port, app/path, stray characters, and -f flv. |
| SSL or certificate error | RTMPS endpoint, scheme, port, or TLS support | Use YouTube’s supplied RTMPS URL; if the URL is correct, try port 443 and check the FFmpeg build. |
| Connection timeout | Endpoint, network route, outbound firewall, or protocol support | Verify the Live Control Room URL, test network egress, and confirm RTMP/RTMPS support. |
| Connection starts but stream is unhealthy | Encoder output, load, bitrate, keyframe interval, or network stability | Inspect local output and encoder errors, check CPU load and outbound connectivity, then compare settings with YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
For an unhealthy stream, YouTube recommends using a current encoder version, inspecting what the encoder produces locally, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and testing outbound internet connectivity. If the local picture and sound are healthy but the remote stream is not, focus on the endpoint and network egress. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance.

Gather safe evidence if the problem continues
Keep the exact FFmpeg error text and note the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the protocol scheme, whether the URL came from the intended Live Control Room stream, and whether you tested a newly copied or reset key. Redact the key; redact the host if needed. For TLS errors, note whether you used RTMPS and tried port 443. For timeouts, include the network environment and whether another supported encoder can reach the same endpoint.
YouTube recommends obtaining a fresh key and updating the encoder for a third-party encoder startup error. If you log in through third-party streaming software without a stream key, YouTube advises contacting that software’s vendor. Its encoder help page describes those troubleshooting paths.
