If your YouTube stream key seems to have vanished from OBS, first check which OBS Profile is active and whether you connect to YouTube with a stream key or by signing in to your account. For a key-based setup, retrieve the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and enter it under OBS Settings > Stream. An update may have coincided with the problem, but the available instructions do not establish that an OBS update caused it.
1. Check the active OBS Profile
OBS Profiles save most settings related to outputs, including stream settings and a connected account. If OBS is using a different Profile than before, its stream configuration may look different.
- Open the Profile menu at the top of OBS.
- Select the Profile you previously used for YouTube.
- Open Settings > Stream and check the service and connection method.
If you have an export of the old Profile, use Profile > Import/Export to import its settings. Profiles do not store Scenes; those are managed separately through Scene Collections. OBS describes using separate Profiles for different streaming services in its Profiles documentation.
2. Confirm how OBS connects to YouTube
In OBS, go to Settings > Stream. Check whether YouTube is selected and whether OBS is connected through an account sign-in or a manually entered stream key. OBS documents the Stream section as the place to select a service and enter connection details, including a key when that method is used: OBS streaming guide.

If you use a stream key
Continue to YouTube Studio to retrieve the key, then paste it into the Stream Key field in OBS. A hidden or blank-looking field does not necessarily mean you need to reset the credential.
If OBS is connected by account sign-in
You may not have a manually entered key in OBS. YouTube treats sign-in through streaming software as a separate setup path; for sign-in compatibility issues, it directs users to the software provider. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance.

3. Retrieve the current YouTube stream key
- In YouTube Studio, choose Create > Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Select Stream.
- Find Stream key and copy the current key.
- Return to OBS and paste it into Settings > Stream > Stream Key, then apply the settings.
YouTube explains that stream keys tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Treat the key like a password: don’t share it or publish it. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings and Set up your encoder for live streaming.
4. Reset the key only if necessary
If you cannot use the existing key or need a new credential, select Reset beside the key in Live Control Room. Copy the newly generated key and replace the old value in OBS. Resetting changes the credential OBS must use, so update the key in OBS before trying to stream. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key; editors and viewers do not have permission.

5. Test the connection before going live
- Confirm the intended Profile is selected in OBS.
- In Settings > Stream, check that the service and connection method are correct and that the key is current if you use one.
- Start a test stream when practical and check the Live Control Room preview before your event.
