Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →After changing an RTMP server, compare the encoder’s full server URL and stream key with the current values for that event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Then read the timestamped Stream Health warning: a destination mismatch is only one possible cause, alongside transport, encoding, audio, video, bitrate, keyframe, frame-rate, or resolution problems.
Verify the destination and stream key first
- Open the correct event in YouTube Studio. In the Live Control Room, find that stream’s settings and note the server URL and stream key. YouTube identifies the URL as the encoder’s destination and the key as the value entered in the encoder. Use the values currently shown for the event, rather than an endpoint remembered from an earlier setup. YouTube’s live-stream settings guide explains these settings.
- Compare the encoder destination field by field. Check the protocol and complete server URL, then confirm that the selected key belongs to the intended stream. If the key was reset, replace the encoder’s saved key with the current one. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it or include it in screenshots shared publicly.
- Save the encoder settings and reconnect. Follow the encoder’s own instructions for applying the change; field names and connection steps vary by product and version. YouTube’s general documentation cannot establish whether a particular encoder retained an old endpoint or which field it uses. If the values already match, do not keep changing them without evidence from the warning or encoder log.
YouTube says the Live Dashboard and Live Control Room check the incoming feed for errors. A correct destination is necessary, but it does not rule out a problem with the media being sent. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes connecting an encoder to a stream.
Check whether the change involved RTMP or RTMPS
RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable labels for the same configured destination. If you intend to send an encrypted RTMPS feed, obtain the RTMPS URL from the lock icon in the Live Control Room and use that URL with an encoder that supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that the default displayed URL may be ordinary RTMP.
- SSL error: Confirm both the protocol and server are configured for RTMPS when required. If the SSL error persists, YouTube suggests specifying port 443.
- Connection timed out: Verify that the URL is correct and that the encoder supports RTMPS if that is the selected transport.
- Not sure which URL is active: Return to the current event’s Live Control Room and copy the displayed value; do not reconstruct an ingest URL from a remembered server name.
These checks follow YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. The right protocol depends on the endpoint and configuration shown for the stream.

Use the warning text and timestamp to find the actual fault
Read the full message beside the Stream Health indicator, including its timestamp. YouTube characterizes red errors as critical and potentially blocking or harmful to the event; yellow errors are moderate and may degrade quality. Unfixed errors can recur. A warning about bitrate or keyframes calls for different checks than an SSL error, so follow the specific message rather than assuming every warning points to the server URL. See YouTube’s live-stream error messages.
If the warning names a media or encoding setting
Compare the encoder configuration with YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube’s encoder guide lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are guidance values, not a universal bitrate preset for every stream.

For a concrete example, YouTube’s current table gives H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps a minimum bitrate of 5 Mbps and a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps. Its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 Kbps. Other bitrate choices vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check the table for the stream’s exact configuration at YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guide.
- For a bitrate warning, check the configured rate and whether the encoder is using CBR.
- For an audio or video configuration warning, check the selected codec and format against YouTube’s supported settings.
- For a keyframe or frame-rate warning, inspect the encoder’s actual output settings rather than relying on a preset’s name.
- For a resolution warning, confirm the outgoing resolution is supported and matches the intended stream configuration.
Separate local encoder problems from network problems
Check what the encoder is receiving and producing before changing unrelated settings. If the picture or sound is already poor in the encoder, inspect source routing, encoder errors, and CPU load; a local recording can help establish whether the problem exists before the feed reaches YouTube. If local output looks and sounds healthy but the live feed still has trouble, investigate the outbound internet connection. YouTube advises contacting the internet service provider if its connection test identifies a problem. Its live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

Test the corrected setup and monitor the live event
- Before the event, run a test with audio and movement similar to what you plan to stream. A static image or silent test may not expose problems that appear with the actual content.
- Check the encoder preview and confirm that the expected audio and video are present before starting the event. A healthy local preview is useful evidence about the encoder output, but does not by itself prove viewers can access the public stream.
- Once connected, monitor Stream Health and note any new warning text and timestamp. YouTube does not specify a guaranteed time for a warning to clear after a change, so verify the observed status rather than assuming the fix has taken effect.
YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking the preview; its live-streaming tips offer additional preparation guidance.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Warning began after the RTMP server change | Current event URL, protocol, and selected stream key in the encoder | Compare each value with the Live Control Room; update only the mismatched setting. |
| SSL error with RTMPS | RTMPS URL from the Live Control Room lock icon; encoder support; protocol and server fields | Correct the endpoint and protocol. If the SSL error persists, try port 443 as YouTube suggests. |
| Connection timed out | URL spelling and whether the encoder supports the configured RTMPS connection | Correct the URL or confirm encoder support; then reconnect and read the new health message. |
| Bitrate, keyframe, frame-rate, or resolution warning | Actual encoder output settings and the matching row in YouTube’s settings guidance | Adjust the specific setting named in Stream Health, using the right codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| Poor picture or sound | Source routing, encoder status, local output, and CPU load | Fix the local media path first; if local output is healthy, investigate the outbound connection. |
| Values appear correct but warning remains | Exact warning text and timestamp, encoder connection log, and current stream settings | Follow the warning category. Product-specific navigation depends on the encoder make, model, and version; avoid guessing at field names. |
