How to Configure an OBS Backup Stream Key for YouTube Failover

A YouTube backup endpoint is not a second stream key. Configure the backup destination that matches your RTMPS or HLS stream, then test encoder rollover before the event.

YouTube failover uses a primary and backup ingest destination; the stream key is the credential for your feed, not a separate “backup key.” In OBS, use the backup RTMPS endpoint for an RTMPS stream. For HLS, use the Backup server URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room—the key is already included in that URL.

Stream key vs. backup server: what you need to configure

A YouTube stream key identifies and authenticates your encoder’s feed. The backup server URL is the alternate ingest destination. Configure the destination that matches your stream protocol; an HLS backup URL is not an RTMPS endpoint. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe entering a server URL and stream key for the general workflow (YouTube encoder setup).

Configure an RTMPS backup endpoint in OBS

  1. Get the stream key. In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live, then open the Stream tab. Create or select the stream and locate its key. If you need a reusable key, YouTube lets you create a custom stream key. Treat it as a password: anyone with access may be able to send video to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. (YouTube: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder)
  2. Choose YouTube in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and configure the server and stream key fields. The exact available choices and labels may vary by OBS version.
  3. Select the backup RTMPS server. In the YouTube service options, choose the backup server when you want OBS to send to YouTube’s alternate RTMPS ingest endpoint. OBS Studio’s current service definition lists the primary as rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2 and the backup as rtmps://b.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2?backup=1. It also lists legacy RTMP endpoints. Use the option present in your installed OBS version rather than assuming the service definition never changes. (OBS Studio service definitions)
  4. Apply and prepare the stream. Save the settings and start the encoder when you are ready to test or go live. Confirm the feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room before the event.

Configure HLS failover instead

HLS has a separate setup. In YouTube Live Control Room, create a stream key configured for HLS, then copy the displayed Backup server URL into the encoder. YouTube says the stream key is already part of this URL, so do not add it as a separate key or paste the URL into an RTMPS configuration. (YouTube HLS ingestion instructions)

The HLS encoder must follow YouTube’s transport and playlist requirements:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Use transport stream (TS) segments between 1 and 4 seconds long.
  • Use a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments.
  • Send requests with HTTPS POST/PUT; do not add encryption beyond HTTPS.
  • Account for higher latency than RTMP. HLS does not support YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option.

Use YouTube’s HLS settings and the encoder’s documentation to verify that your configuration meets those requirements; an RTMPS endpoint or key-field workflow is not interchangeable with HLS.

RTMPS and HLS compared

Setting RTMPS HLS
Backup destination Select YouTube’s backup ingest endpoint in OBS’s YouTube service options; confirm the option in your installed version. Copy YouTube Live Control Room’s displayed Backup server URL.
Key handling Enter the stream key separately in the encoder’s key field. The key is embedded in the Backup server URL; do not enter it again as a separate key.
Protocol requirements Use the RTMPS endpoint for an RTMPS stream. TS segments of 1–4 seconds, no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no additional encryption.
Latency HLS’s higher-latency limitation does not apply to this RTMPS endpoint. Higher latency than RTMP; ultra-low latency is unavailable.

Test failover before the event

Configuring a backup destination is not proof that your stream will switch successfully. YouTube recommends testing by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then confirming that the player rolls over to the backup encoder. This is a deliberate test of the encoder paths; do not wait for a real outage to find out whether the backup works. (YouTube: Set up live streaming with an encoder)

  1. Prepare the stream at least 2 hours before the event.
  2. Start encoders at least 15 minutes before the event and check the Live Control Room preview.
  3. Verify audio and video, then stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network cable to test the backup path.
  4. Confirm the player rolls over to the backup feed and restore the primary setup when the test is complete.

For network capacity, YouTube recommends upload bandwidth for the primary and backup streams combined, plus 20% headroom. If both encoders send at the same bitrate, calculate the combined requirement from both outgoing feeds, then add that headroom; do not size the connection for only one encoder. (YouTube encoder and network guidance)

Troubleshooting

  • OBS connects, but the backup does not take over: Check that you configured a distinct backup encoder/path and performed the recommended failure test. The endpoint setting alone does not establish that your encoder, computer, or network will automatically switch after a failure.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Confirm the stream key and server URL are current and belong to the intended stream. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS backup endpoint; for HLS, use the HLS Backup server URL.
  • The HLS encoder rejects the URL or key: Copy the complete Backup server URL from Live Control Room. The key is already in it; do not use it as an RTMPS URL or append a separately entered key.
  • The HLS feed is delayed or fails validation: Check the TS segment duration, outstanding-segment limit, HTTPS POST/PUT transport, and encryption settings against YouTube’s HLS requirements.
  • The preview is unstable during a failover test: Check available upload capacity against the combined primary and backup bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  • Your stream key may be compromised: Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then update the credential in OBS before streaming again.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a pre-recorded YouTube stream that should loop continuously, StreamNeo is a different option from an OBS failover setup: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube only.
