YouTube announced on February 26, 2025, that more than 1 billion monthly active viewers watched podcast content on its platform. The figure is genuine, but “viewers” matters: it is not a count of podcast subscribers, RSS downloads, paid users, or necessarily people who consider podcast listening their primary habit.
What YouTube actually announced
YouTube’s wording was “more than 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content.” The announcement described a global audience across the broader YouTube ecosystem, rather than a separately audited YouTube Music subscriber or listener total. YouTube did not publish a full methodology, demographic breakdown, or detailed split between full episodes, clips and other podcast-related viewing in the cited announcement.
YouTube reaffirmed the milestone on May 28, 2026, again describing YouTube Podcasts as having more than 1 billion monthly active users. It also said YouTube Premium members watched more than 800 million hours of podcasts in April 2026. That confirmation supports the conclusion that the threshold remained current, but it is not a newer precise audience count or a published growth series.

Why “viewers” is more accurate than “listeners”
A monthly active viewer may watch a complete video episode, listen while the app runs in the background, discover a show through a clip or other podcast-format material, or encounter an audio-first program delivered through YouTube’s podcast tools. The public figure does not establish that each counted person subscribed to a show, downloaded an episode, consumed a full program, or listened habitually.
- Viewers: people who consumed podcast content on YouTube during the month.
- Listeners: a useful everyday shorthand, but less precise because the platform includes video consumption.
- Subscribers: people who follow a channel or show; YouTube did not say the billion figure is a subscription count.
- Downloads and RSS consumption: traditional podcast measures that are not interchangeable with YouTube’s audience metric.
- Watch hours: a time-based measure, such as YouTube’s separate living-room statistic, not a unique-user count.
For that reason, “YouTube has over 1 billion monthly podcast users” is understandable headline shorthand, while “YouTube says more than 1 billion people watch podcast content each month” is the safer description.
Why YouTube has become a major podcast platform
YouTube can turn one show into a long-form video, an audio listening experience, a searchable archive, clips, Shorts, community discussion and connected-TV programming. Search and recommendations can introduce a program to people who were not already looking for it, while subscriptions and notifications help retain existing audiences.
YouTube says that, in the United States and including YouTube Music, it is the most frequently used service for listening to podcasts. That is a company claim about U.S. usage, not proof of a universal global ranking; the cited announcement does not provide the complete methodology behind it.

The living-room effect
Google said viewers watched more than 400 million hours of podcasts monthly on living-room devices in 2024. This is a watch-hours figure for televisions and connected-TV hardware, not a count of people and not all podcast viewing. It also does not show how much was active attention rather than background playback.
The statistic nevertheless illustrates YouTube’s broader strategy: podcasts increasingly compete with television and streaming video as well as with audio apps. A filmed interview can be consumed on a phone, continued in YouTube Music, or watched on a television without changing platforms.

How creators publish podcasts on YouTube
Video-first publishing
Teams can upload filmed episodes directly through YouTube Studio. This approach suits studio interviews, video storytelling and shows that already produce camera footage. It also makes clips, Shorts, live episodes and visual thumbnails part of the same publishing workflow.
Audio-first publishing through RSS
Creators can submit an RSS feed to YouTube. YouTube can turn feed episodes into videos using static artwork or audiogram-style formats; initial RSS-delivered episodes may be uploaded as private videos before publication. Producers must verify metadata, artwork, publication dates, music and other rights, and handle advertising or paid-promotion disclosures correctly.

What creators can measure
YouTube’s podcast tools expose metrics including impressions, click-through rate, traffic sources, views, watch time, demographics and engagement. These measures help a producer understand YouTube performance, but they do not automatically describe total podcast consumption across every app or RSS destination.
Monetization: reach is not a guaranteed payout
Eligible creators in the YouTube Partner Program may combine several revenue sources:
- Watch Page ads on long-form video and audio-oriented podcast uploads.
- Revenue allocated from YouTube Premium members’ viewing behavior.
- Channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks.
- Shopping and other eligible commerce features.
- Direct host-read sponsorships or other commercial integrations, subject to disclosure and rights rules.
Eligibility is separate from audience size. The YouTube Partner Program has threshold and policy requirements, and eligible long-form or live content needs the Watch Page Monetization Module for Watch Page ad and Premium revenue.

YouTube may place ads on videos from channels that are not yet eligible to share revenue. Advertiser demand, geography, audience, content category, rights ownership and viewer behavior all affect actual earnings. Premium revenue is not a fixed payment per view, and YouTube publishes no universal podcast CPM.
Ads may come through the auction, Google Ad Manager and other YouTube-sold sources. Qualified partners can also sell advertising directly against content they own. The distinction is explained in YouTube’s advertising documentation. Automated advertiser-friendly systems can limit monetization, although creators can request human review in applicable cases; see YouTube’s monetization review guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the milestone means for advertisers
The scale makes YouTube a potentially important podcast advertising channel, but it is not equivalent to buying a traditional download or a guaranteed host-read placement. Campaign planners may assess Watch Page video inventory, audio-oriented placements, connected-TV reach, creator integrations and targeting through Google’s advertising systems.
The billion figure alone does not disclose ad-supported versus Premium viewing, country-by-country reach, average minutes watched, completion rates, logged-in measurement, age composition or the proportion watching full episodes rather than clips. Advertisers should therefore compare incremental reach, brand safety, measurement and outcomes against Spotify, Apple Podcasts, radio and other video platforms rather than treating the number as one billion guaranteed impressions.

YouTube and Spotify are reporting different things
Spotify said on May 21, 2026, that more than 500 million users had streamed a video podcast. That demonstrates Spotify’s expanding video-podcast audience, but it is not directly comparable with YouTube’s “more than 1 billion monthly active viewers” unless the companies’ definitions, time windows and counting methods match.
| Area | YouTube | Spotify |
|---|---|---|
| Core identity | Broad video and creator platform | Audio, music, podcast and audiobook platform |
| Discovery | Search, recommendations, Shorts and subscriptions | Personalized audio recommendations and podcast surfaces |
| Video role | Central to the platform’s main experience | Expanding as an extension of podcast listening |
| Living-room use | Strong connected-TV distribution | Dependent on supported apps and devices |
| Reported audience figure | More than 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content | More than 500 million users who had streamed a video podcast |

What the billion figure does not prove
- It does not show that 1 billion people subscribe to podcasts.
- It does not show that 1 billion people watched complete episodes.
- It does not provide an average watch time per person.
- It does not establish a detailed geographic split for the global audience.
- It does not reveal advertising effectiveness, pricing or creator profitability.
- It does not measure an individual show’s audience.
- It does not prove that YouTube has overtaken Spotify on a directly comparable basis.
What creators should weigh before moving to YouTube
Advantages
- Built-in search and recommendation discovery.
- One ecosystem for episodes, clips, Shorts, live content and community features.
- YouTube Music distribution and background-play or download functionality for most podcast content without requiring YouTube Music Premium, subject to product and content limitations.
- Connected-TV reach and detailed YouTube analytics.
- Several potential monetization mechanisms.
Costs and risks
- Video production can cost substantially more than audio-only production.
- Static-image uploads may compete poorly for attention against professionally produced video.
- Recommendation traffic can be volatile.
- Copyright claims can affect music, clips, archival material and guest footage.
- Advertiser-friendly rules can restrict controversial, graphic or otherwise unsuitable material.
- An audience built on YouTube is not automatically portable to another podcast app.
RSS migrations also require careful metadata checks, sponsorship disclosures, rights verification and coordination to avoid duplicate episodes or confused subscribers.
The bottom line
YouTube has become a major global podcast distribution and discovery platform, and its billion-plus milestone is credible as a company-reported monthly audience of podcast-content viewers. The important qualification is that podcasting is now being measured across audio, video, search, social discovery and television—not solely through subscriptions or downloads. Treat YouTube’s number as evidence of enormous platform reach, not as a precise count of dedicated listeners, full-episode viewers or guaranteed commercial value.
