The current beta is called Prompted Playlist. It interprets a natural-language request, considers signals Spotify says can include your listening history and current music context, and assembles a playlist from songs already in Spotify’s catalog.
What Spotify is actually testing
Prompted Playlist lets eligible Premium users describe what they want to hear instead of selecting every track manually. A request can combine mood, activity, genre, artists, decade, location, exclusions and discovery preferences. Spotify says the system can also use listening patterns and information about trends, charts, culture and music history.

That makes the playlist algorithmically generated or curated, but not AI-generated music. Spotify is selecting and arranging existing recordings. It has not publicly established the specific model, model provider, training data or ranking architecture behind the feature.
Spotify describes the experience as a collaboration: you set the direction and rules, while Spotify turns them into recommendations. Generated playlists can include notes explaining why individual songs or episodes were included. Those notes are part of the recommendation experience, not independent proof that every choice is objectively correct.

AI Playlist and Prompted Playlist are related, but not identical

Who can use Prompted Playlist?
- Premium is required to create one.
- Use the Spotify mobile app. Spotify’s support instructions do not present desktop creation as the supported path.
- The documented language is English only.
- Availability depends on market, account and rollout. Confirmed markets include the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the earlier New Zealand test, but Spotify does not promise worldwide access.
- It remains a beta. Menus, limits and behavior can change, and Spotify says usage limits apply.
A Premium subscription therefore does not guarantee immediate access. Country, language, app version, account rollout and beta limits can all matter. Free listeners may be able to play a shared prompted playlist, but they cannot use its prompt to generate a personalized version.

Spotify’s U.S. pricing page, checked August 18, 2026, displayed these offers and rates:

How to create a Prompted Playlist
- Open the Spotify mobile app.
- Go to Your Library.
- Tap Create at the top.
- Select Prompted Playlist.
- Describe what you want to hear in the prompt box.
- Optionally choose a refresh schedule: daily or weekly.
- Tap Generate playlist.
- Use Edit prompt to revise the request rather than starting over.
Spotify confirms the refresh choices but does not specify an exact refresh time, a fixed number of tracks added, or whether every refresh completely rebuilds the playlist. If a version is perfect for a trip, workout or event, save or duplicate it before scheduled updates change the contents.
If you see the older AI Playlist interface
Earlier instructions used Your Library → + → AI Playlist. Spotify also directed users to search for “AI Playlist,” enter a prompt and refine the results. That path reflects the earlier beta and may be transitional as Spotify moves accounts toward Prompted Playlist. The original launch is documented in Spotify’s April 2024 announcement and the later market-expansion announcement.
Prompts that give Spotify useful direction
Specificity helps, but treat the feature as recommendation guidance rather than a deterministic database query. These examples combine the kinds of inputs Spotify highlights:

“A mellow evening mix led by soul and jazz, avoid aggressive vocals, and include a few artists new to me.”
Spotify’s earlier guidance also encouraged creative descriptions involving colors, movie characters, animals and emojis. The most useful prompt usually states the situation, desired energy, musical references and whether you want familiar favorites or discovery.

Spotify says Prompted Playlist can draw on the listener’s entire Spotify history, potentially reaching back to when the account was created, as well as listening patterns, the prompt and current music-world information. Spotify’s product description is not an independently audited explanation of its ranking pipeline, so these should be understood as the company’s account of intended behavior.
History-based personalization can improve relevance, but it can also create a taste loop. Frequently played artists may reappear, an accidental play may look like a preference, and a vague request for discovery may still produce familiar genres. Ask explicitly for deep cuts, emerging artists, unfamiliar acts or music outside your normal history when that is the goal.

Spotify says current trends, charts, culture and music history can inform results. That does not mean every event is recognized, every cultural association is correct, or that a chart change appears immediately. “Real-time information” should not be read as guaranteed live web search or fact-checking.
Limits you should expect
- Hard constraints may be missed. Exact song counts, durations, BPM ranges, one-song-per-artist rules, strict release-date cutoffs and total genre exclusions are not promised.
- Results can change. A refreshed playlist may differ as your history, new releases and Spotify’s systems change.
- Usage caps apply. Spotify says limits can change during the beta.
- Language and region matter. A supported Premium account in an unsupported market or language may still lack the feature.
- Explanatory notes are not guarantees. They can clarify the intended fit without proving that the song satisfies every requested rule.
- Privacy questions require Spotify’s own documentation. Review the company’s privacy and safety center before assuming how prompts, history or AI-related data are retained, shared or used.
Sharing a prompted playlist
You can share a Prompted Playlist by link. Another Premium user in a supported test market can use the original prompt to generate a new version personalized to that person. A Free user can listen to the shared result, but cannot generate a personalized version from the prompt.
Sharing the prompt therefore does not mean everyone hears an identical personalized playlist. Each eligible Premium listener can receive a result shaped by their own account history and context.
What to do when the feature is missing
- Check that you are signed into a Premium account.
- Use the mobile app and look under Your Library → Create.
- Confirm that your account is in a documented rollout market and that your app language is English.
- Update Spotify, then reopen the app; beta menu labels can change during rollouts.
- Search for AI Playlist only as a fallback, since some accounts may still show the older experience.
- If the option remains absent, assume the beta has not reached the account or a usage limit is blocking creation; Spotify does not promise universal access.
Is Prompted Playlist worth using?
It is most useful when you know the atmosphere, activity or discovery goal you want but do not want to build a playlist track by track. It is less suitable when you need a guaranteed duration, exact BPM, strict artist counts or a permanently fixed sequence. It also is not a substitute for AI music generation: no new audio is being composed.

Start with a clear situation and mood, add a few musical references and exclusions, then use Edit prompt to steer a promising result. For a fixed event, preserve the version you like; for everyday listening, daily or weekly refreshes can keep the mix moving.
