YouTube RTMP Stream Drops After Changing the Video Encoder: Settings to Check

A dropped YouTube stream after an encoder change may be a bitrate, destination, network, or computer-load issue—not just a codec problem. Check settings in a controlled order.

If your YouTube stream started dropping after you changed encoders, compare the actual output settings first: protocol and destination, video codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate mode and value, keyframe interval, and audio codec. Then check YouTube’s stream key and URL, Live Control Room health, and your encoder’s statistics. A change that preceded the drop is a clue, not proof that the codec itself is at fault.

1. Compare the encoder’s actual output settings

Write down the settings the encoder is sending now and, if available, the previous values. Preset names can hide meaningful differences; compare the configured output rather than assuming two presets behave alike.

  • Protocol and destination URL: RTMP or RTMPS, plus the selected YouTube server.
  • Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1.
  • Output resolution and frame rate.
  • Bitrate mode and configured bitrate.
  • Keyframe interval.
  • Audio codec and settings.

YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video. Its guidance recommends CBR, up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

A codec change can alter the applicable bitrate recommendation. A resolution or frame-rate increase can also increase the bitrate required and the work your computer must do. Match the bitrate to the incoming codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than carrying over a value from the old profile.

YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations

The following are YouTube Help’s published recommended and minimum ingestion bitrates, as available in 2026. They are recommendations for the specified codec and output mode, not a guarantee that a particular connection or encoder will work. Values are in Mbps.

Output AV1 or H.265 recommended / minimum H.264 recommended / minimum
720p, 30 fps 6 / 2 8 / 3
720p, 60 fps 6 / 2 8 / 3
1080p, 30 fps 10 / 4 14 / 5
1080p, 60 fps 12 / 4 17 / 6
1440p, 30 fps 15 / 5 21 / 7
1440p, 60 fps 24 / 6 34 / 8
2160p (4K), 30 fps 30 / 8 42 / 11
2160p (4K), 60 fps 35 / 10 50 / 14

YouTube’s current table also lists 480p and 360p; use its linked page for those modes. Its guidance additionally calls for progressive scan, square pixels, CABAC, and Rec. 709 for SDR. HDR has separate constraints: YouTube specifies HEVC for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR, so do not assume SDR settings transfer unchanged.

The Live Control Room normally detects resolution and frame rate automatically. Manual resolution selection is associated with a custom stream key with manual settings enabled. If you changed keys or stream setup as part of the encoder change, verify that configuration before changing output quality.

2. Verify the YouTube URL and stream key

The server URL and stream key are separate connection settings: the URL routes the encoder to YouTube, while the key identifies and authorizes the feed. A new encoder profile may have switched either value or selected a different saved destination.

  1. Open the intended broadcast or stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
  2. Compare its current stream URL and key with the destination configured in the encoder.
  3. If you intend to use RTMPS, copy the RTMPS address from the URL field. YouTube notes that the default display may show ordinary RTMP.
  4. If you reset the key, update the encoder’s saved key too; do not reset it without a reason.

If the encoder reports an SSL error, confirm that both the protocol and host are set for RTMPS. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for that specific SSL-error scenario. See YouTube’s guidance for streaming over RTMPS and how to manage live stream settings.

3. Use the symptom to separate network trouble from encoding overload

Check the encoder’s statistics and YouTube’s stream health before changing more settings. The warning and the measurements can point to different causes that need different fixes.

Dropped frames, disconnections, or bitrate collapse

In OBS, network dropped frames or a falling stream bitrate indicate a connection-to-ingest problem when the route is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Too many dropped frames can disconnect the stream. OBS recommends basing the video bitrate on stable upload capacity; its suggestion to start around 75% of total upload speed is a general starting point, not a YouTube-specific requirement or guarantee.

  • Test a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi if practical. A cable can help isolate a wireless problem, but it will not fix a wrong codec, key, URL, or overloaded computer.
  • Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, network-optimizer software, driver, router, modem, cable, or other network device could be interfering.
  • If the route cannot hold the configured bitrate, lower the video bitrate to a sustainable level and retest. OBS dynamic bitrate can reduce bitrate during congestion, but it does not repair the underlying connection problem and may reduce picture quality.
  • If those checks do not resolve a persistent connection issue, OBS advises contacting your internet service provider.

“Encoding overloaded” or render/encoding lag

An encoding-overloaded warning points to computer performance, not necessarily the internet connection. Check CPU/GPU load and whether the new profile raised resolution or frame rate. OBS recommends freeing GPU capacity, simplifying scenes, and reducing output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not working, try 30 fps and test again. See OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting.

4. Run a controlled preflight before the next event

Test the complete setup under representative conditions instead of changing several settings at once. Include the audio and motion your actual stream will contain, since a static preview may not expose the same problems.

  1. Change one meaningful variable at a time and record the value, so you can identify which change affects the result.
  2. Start a test stream with representative video motion and audio.
  3. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then inspect stream health and messages alongside the encoder’s output statistics.
  4. If the stream drops, note whether the evidence points to ingest connection, encoding/render performance, or destination/key configuration before making the next change.
  5. Allow setup and troubleshooting time: YouTube’s live tips advise setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting them at least 15 minutes early.

YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking the preview. See YouTube’s live streaming tips.
